Ian Callum's Design Team Is Behind This Reimagined Red-Hot Mini

Car and Driver26-06-2025
Famed British car designer Ian Callum revealed his design house's newest creation: a rowdy reimagination of the Mk5 Mini Sportspack.
It's built in collaboration with the coachbuilder Wood and Pickett, and overhauls the hatchback with a new suspension and stronger brakes.
The overhauled Mini features a rebuilt 1310 cc rally engine with a new cylinder head, two-point fuel injection, and a custom twin-pipe exhaust.
Throughout his career, Ian Callum has designed a lot of cars. He penned both the Aston Martin DB7 and the Vanquish. His back catalog includes the Jaguar XK, the F-type, and even a road-going version of the C-X75 concept car. Callum's newest design is a collaboration between his eponymous design house and the coachbuilder Wood & Pickett.

It's aptly named the Wood and Pickett Mini by Callum, and it looks downright rambunctious. Based on the Mk5 Mini Sportsback, the Wood and Pickett Mini by Callum reimagines the pint-sized commuter as a modern hot hatch packed to the gills with character.
The original engine is gone, with a 1310 cc rally engine in its place. The mill now makes 110 brake horsepower. It has a new cylinder head, two-point fuel injection, a custom twin-pipe exhaust, and a reinforced gearbox to handle the extra power.

The handling has been retuned to feel like it was engineered by someone who has heard the word "rizz" used in a sentence before, rather than feeling like it came straight from 1990. The original wheels are gone in favor of a four-spoke set of Callum's own design, which measures in at the same 13 inches in diameter. A set of grooved and ventilated 8.4-inch disc brakes hides behind the wheels.

The styling inside looks like what you'd expect from a firm called "Wood and Pickett." The dashboard features a wooden fascia inspired by walnut panels found in the company's Margrave Mini, built in the 1960s. There are metal fog-light and heater switches, along with metal cupholders and metal instrument gauges. A small touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility brings a more modern feel to the cabin.
Each Wood and Pickett Mini by Callum will be built to the owner's specifications, with pricing for the reimaginations starting just north of $100,000.

Oscar Piastri Seethes Over ‘Ridiculous' British GP Penalty

Oscar Piastri Seethes Over 'Ridiculous' British GP Penalty originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Oscar Piastri was visibly frustrated after the British GP, branding his controversial penalty behind the Safety Car as effectively 'ridiculous' though he chose his words carefully to avoid an even bigger storm. Advertisement The McLaren driver crossed the line in second at Silverstone, only to be slapped with a 10-second penalty for allegedly braking too sharply as the Safety car lights went out. That infringement cost him any realistic shot at hunting down Nico hulkenberg for the win and left him simmering when questioned post-race. 'I'm not going to say much. I'll get myself in trouble,' Piastri told Sky Sports F1, barely concealing his irritation. 'Apparently you can't brake behind the Safety Car anymore. I did it for five laps before that. I still like Silverstone, even if I don't like it today.' Oscar Piastri celebrates after winning Bahrain Grand PrixRula Rouhana/Reuters In the cooldown room with P3 holder Nico Hulkenberg, Piastri offered a blunt explanation: 'I got a 10-second penalty for braking behind the safety car. I hit the brakes basically as the lights went out, so then I didn't accelerate — apparently that gets you a 10-second penalty.' Advertisement McLaren boss Zak Brown had earlier suggested on Sky Sports that it was a messy situation. 'That was a bit of a late Safety Car call in,' Brown said. 'The leader controls the pace. I think it looked a little bit more dramatic on TV than it was on telemetry.' Despite the setback, Piastri still salvaged a valuable podium for McLaren and kept his cool enough to avoid a war of words with the FIA. But his thinly veiled frustration says it all, he knows this one got away. Fernando Alonso Left Steaming After Aston Martin Strategy Blunder

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso finished the British Grand Prix in P9 - taking home a solid points haul - though he was not impressed with the team's strategy decisions. Despite finishing in the points, Alonso felt there were points left on the track and the team failed to capitalize on the various safety cars and changing conditions. "It seems that P3 was very possible. I started P7, finished P9. Nico started P18, finished P3," he told the media after the race. "So I think if you get it right, we know in these mixed conditions how good the result could be. Alonso was furious with the team during the race as his teammate, Lance Stroll, managed to make up several positions by staying out during safety cars. Those decisions weren't made from Alonso's side of the garage, which led to frustration on the radio. His luck eventually turned his way after Alonso made the bold decision to pit for slick tires on lap 38 of the race. He was the first driver to take the risk and put on the medium tire. At first, he was sliding around due to the track still being wet, but he eventually managed to make the switch pay off. The decision to opt for the medium tire helped him move up from P14 to eventually finish ninth, although graining issues limited his ability to pass other cars. After the race, Alonso was left wondering what could have been if he had been in a similar position to Stroll, who ran in third for a good part of the race. "Yeah, I don't know, I would like to have his track position to be honest and try to feel the deg from that because I was P14 when everyone switches to dry, so I don't know," the Spanish driver said. "I think he was with the soft at the end, so maybe we grained the tyres more than the others because I had the medium and I had some graining as well, so I imagine the soft was maybe even worse." While dropping two positions from his starting spot is a bitter pill to swallow, Alonso did well to rescue some points. For the second half of the season, Aston Martin will need to review its strategy to identify areas for improvement and avoid missing out on more points. I was well within the rules: Piastri fumes over penalty

It was a study in contrasts. Lando Norris exulting in his first victory at his home British Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri assessing the damage of a 10-second penalty that robbed him of a chance of glory. The McLaren pair are jostling for the world title in a two-horse race. Australia's Piastri has an eight-point lead but the force is with Norris, who has won the last two races, in Austria and here at Silverstone in front of a euphoric 168,000 crowd. The turning point was the 10-second sanction imposed by the stewards after Piastri decelerated from 135mph to just 32mph on the Hangar Straight ahead of a safety car restart. Max Verstappen was forced to take evasive action Our Osc 🏆#McLaren | #GoogleChrome | #BritishGP 🇬🇧 — McLaren (@McLarenF1) July 6, 2025 The stewards ruled Piastri guilty of "erratic driving" and that Verstappen had to take "evasive action to avoid a collision". But Piastri insisted that his move had been "well within the rules" and that he had already performed the manoeuvre once in the race. "I don't really get it. I hit the brakes, and at the same time as I did, the lights went out on the safety car. I didn't accelerate because I can control the pace from there," he said. "I didn't do anything differently to my first restart. I didn't go slower. I don't think Max had to evade me. So I am a bit confused to say the least. I know I deserved a lot more than I did today and when you don't get the result you deserve, it hurts. "Apparently you can't brake behind the safety car anymore. I had done it for five laps before but I'm not going to say more, I'm going to get myself in trouble. I still like Silverstone even if I don't like it today." Piastri even asked over the radio for McLaren to order him and Norris to swap places to cancel the effect of the penalty. The team declined to do so. He said: "I knew what the answer was going to be before I asked. But I just wanted a small glimmer of hope that I could get it back but I knew it wasn't going to happen. "Lando didn't do anything wrong so I don't think it would have been fair to swap, but I thought I should ask. It doesn't change much for the championship. I felt I did a good job and I will use the frustration to make sure I win some more races." It was joy unconfined for Norris, who said: "This victory is everything I dreamed of. Being on top at your home race is very, very special. "From a British perspective, I join a long list of pretty incredible winners - most of them are Lewis (Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix a record nine times) - so to join him and continue the reign of the British at Silverstone is amazing. "Looking up at the fans and seeing them on their feet, your mind just goes pretty blank. The main thing is just don't f*** it up. I was just trying to enjoy the moment. "But these are moments that none of you guys get to witness. This is only something that I, and very few Brits have achieved. It is a selfish moment, in a way, but so special and incredible because it is such a rare thing to feel and witness." With agencies
