Siemens and SAP call for EU to revise its AI regulations: Report
Siemens
and
SAP
CEOs have urged the European Union to revise its
artificial intelligence
legislation, saying the current rules stifle innovation.
SAP CEO
Christian Klein
and Siemens CEO Roland Busch told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that a new regulatory framework is needed to support rather than hinder technological advancement.
The EU's AI Act, which became law last year, governs the development and use of AI systems to ensure they are safe, transparent and respect fundamental rights.
The law classifies AI applications into risk categories, according to which providers must meet certain security and transparency requirements.
But Siemens' Busch said the Act was a key reason Europe is lagging, adding overlapping and sometimes contradictory regulations are hampering progress.
He said the EU's Data Act, another law which sets out obligations on how companies use consumer and corporate data, was "toxic" for developing digital business models.
While several companies including Google owner Alphabet and Facebook owner Meta recently wrote to Brussels asking for the rules to be postponed, Busch declined to sign their letter, saying the proposal did not go far enough.
SAP's Klein warned against simply copying the U.S. and only investing heavily in infrastructure and data centres, emphasizing that infrastructure shortages are not the main barrier in Europe.
Instead, both CEOs called for reforming data rules before investing in data centres.
"We are sitting on a treasure trove of data in Europe, but we are not yet able to tap into it," Busch told the newspaper. "It's not access to computing capacity that we're currently lacking, but the release of resources."

Etihad, Other Airlines Order Inspection Of Boeing 787 Fuel Switch Locks: Report
Last Updated: The directive came just after an initial probe report of the plane crash involving an Air India flight AI-171, which resulted in 270 fatalities, was released. After preliminary findings from the investigation into the June 12 crash of Air India flight AI-171, major international airlines have started inspecting the fuel control switch locking mechanisms on their Boeing 787 aircraft, according to a report. The directive came just after an initial probe report of the plane crash involving an Air India flight AI-171, which resulted in 270 fatalities, was released. Etihad Airways issued an internal instruction on July 13 directing engineers to examine the locking mechanisms on its Boeing 787 aircraft, specifically referencing aircraft registered as A6-BLI, reported The Economic Times, citing exclusive documents. Sources revealed that Singapore Airlines has also begun similar inspections. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released its preliminary report on July 12, stating that the fuel control switches on the Air India aircraft had transitioned from 'RUN" to 'CUTOFF" just three seconds after takeoff. According to the AAIB, cockpit audio recorded a conversation between the pilots, with one asking, 'Why did you cut off (the fuel supply)?" The other responded that he had not done so. The Boeing 787's fuel control switches are designed with a locking system that prevents unintentional movement. The switch must be lifted before being moved into position—either forward to initiate fuel supply (RUN) or backwards to stop it (CUTOFF). The AAIB cited a 2018 safety notice from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which warned of potential failures in this locking mechanism. The bulletin highlighted the risk that a faulty system could allow the switch to move without deliberate pilot input. However, Air India had not conducted the FAA-recommended inspection, as it was not classified as mandatory. As investigations continue, other airlines are now taking precautionary steps to examine their own Boeing 787 fleets for similar issues. Travel entrepreneur offers AI-based solution worth ₹1 crore to solve Bengaluru's traffic woes
Prashant Pitti, co-founder of EaseMyTrip, a New Delhi-based online travel firm, has announced a contribution of ₹1 crore to develop an Artificial Intelligence-powered solution that can identify traffic pinch points across Bengaluru. The initiative stems from Mr. Pitti's personal experience of being trapped for 100 minutes at a single traffic jam-prone zone on the Outer Ring Road, transforming a 11-km journey into a grueling two-hour experience. He told The Hindu: 'The project's success will depend on collaboration with the Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP) and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), who must provide access to their traffic data feeds and establish dedicated teams to implement the AI-generated recommendations.'' He said that rather than adding to the endless stream of traffic complaints, he chose to create tangible solutions by utilising Google Maps' recently introduced 'Road Management Insight' feature, available in Big Query format since April 2025, to find a logical remedy to the city's long-standing traffic challenges. 'This comprehensive system will integrate satellite imagery with machine learning algorithms to systematically identify traffic congestion points and analyse the peak timing patterns,'' he said. The funding allocation would support hiring experienced machine learning and AI engineers and cover operational expenses, including Google Maps API usage, satellite imagery procurement, GPU resources, and field testing programmes. The entire solution would be designed as an open-source platform, allowing other Indian cities to implement similar traffic management systems, he added. However, he said, the project's success would depend on collaboration with the BTP and the BBMP. Mr. Pitti also requested public support by encouraging citizens to connect with traffic authorities, inviting AI professionals to contribute their expertise, and rallying commuters to advocate for the initiative, emphasising that India's technology capital deserved world-class infrastructure for its innovators and workforce.

E5 Shinkansen trains to be used for trial runs for bullet train project in FY26-27, claim railway officials
This is an AI-generated image. NEW DELHI: The E5 variant of Japanese Shinkansen trains will be used for trial runs in the Gujarat section of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project in financial year 2026-27, railway officials have said. India will subsequently buy the state-of-the-art E10 variants, which will be rolled out in India and Japan simultaneously. E10 Shinkansen trains are likely to be launched in 2030. The country's first bullet train project is progressing well, a senior railway ministry official said. 'Only Japanese Shinkansen trains will be deployed for the trial runs and then we will have the most advanced trains from Japan to run on the entire 508-km corridor,' he added. In an official release, the ministry said: 'In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese govt has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project. E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan. The entire 508-km corridor is being developed with Japanese Shinkansen technology. It will set new benchmarks for speed, safety, and reliability. This reflects the deep strategic and technological cooperation between India and Japan'. Meanwhile, govt has allotted the task of building two bullet trains, which can run at a maximum speed of 280 kmph, to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and BEML. It has also bid out the signalling work for the Bullet train corridor to a joint venture of Siemens and DR Agrawal Infracon. It remains to be seen how the railways can operate E5 trains on this signalling system even for trial purposes. The ministry said civil works for the project are progressing at a rapid pace. So far 310 km of viaducts have been constructed, 15 river bridges have been built and another four are in advanced stages of construction. Out of 12 stations, five have been completed and three more are reaching completion stage. Breakthrough has also been achieved on the first section of the 21-km undersea tunnel for the project.
