Tzaneen's Talana hostel upgrade to bring 146 homes
Speaking during the presentation, CoGHSTA MEC Basikopo Makamu confirmed that the project is set to begin in the second quarter of 2025, with the procurement process for a contractor already underway.
'To keep up with growing housing demands due to migration, we are prioritising the construction of CRUs in areas like Talana under the Greater Tzaneen Municipality,' Makamu said.
He also highlighted efforts to address critical infrastructure challenges, noting that CoGHSTA will assist water service authorities in upgrading sewer systems posing health risks in areas such as Dan village in Tzaneen.
He reported that while the sewer line in Makotse village has been completed, engineering designs for Dan village are in progress following a detailed site assessment.
Makamu reaffirmed the department's commitment to reducing informal settlements, including targeted intervention in the Maruleng Municipality.
He further outlined progress on various projects in the Mopani District, including the Ha-Mawasha Sewer Bulk Line, Giyani Extension F and H Bulk Water Pipelines, and the Siyandhani Bulk Sewer Pipeline.
Makamu said he recently visited the Giyani Section F and Masakaneng bulk water and sewage projects. He praised the progress, especially in Giyani Section F, where the project is complete and ready for municipal allocation of residential sites.
The development has already created 21 job opportunities and is expected to benefit 365 households, he said.

5 interview red flags to look out for
5 interview red flags to look out for ATTENDING a job interview can be daunting, especially in light of South Africa's rising rate of unemployment, particularly among the youth. While the pressure to remain professional in a room full of strangers can be nerve-wracking, what if there are red flags you, as the candidate, should be on the lookout for? ALSO READ: 6 most common lies job seekers tell on their CVs With the rise of toxic workplace environments, is there a way to tell if a company is toxic before you sign on the dotted line? Here are 5 red flags to look out for during interviews: 1. The interviewer being late: As the saying goes, 'first impressions last'. If the interviewer is running late and makes no effort to apologise, it's a sign of disrespect and could give you insight into how you might be treated if you accept the offer. 2. We are one big family: While this is common in interviews and can make candidates feel more relaxed, it's important to remember that toxic families exist too. 3. Asking too many personal questions: This is too much, too soon. The infamous 'tell us about yourself' question primarily concerns your work experience, not your personal life. If a company insists on prying into your personal affairs more than your professional background, it may indicate a lack of boundaries—something that could be used against you. 4. Vague about salary and benefits: It's true that salary discussions often do not come up during the interview, and it can be considered awkward to ask. However, if the potential employer consistently avoids the topic when it does arise, it could reflect poorly on the role you're applying for. 5. Offering you the job immediately: While this can boost your confidence, it may also be a sign that the company has a high staff turnover rate, which often signals a toxic environment. Empowering women: SASSA expands leadership training initiative
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has officially launched the fourth intake of its Women in Leadership Development Programme, a strategic initiative designed to strengthen gender representation and leadership capacity within the public service. Launched on June 24, the programme will see 120 women in middle and senior management positions undergo six months of leadership training. The goal is to empower women with the strategic, emotional, and operational skills required to succeed in complex government environments. The initiative focuses on areas such as strategic leadership, emotional intelligence, people management, and self-awareness, providing participants with tools to excel and lead with purpose. Sassa CEO Themba Matlou, in his keynote address, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to gender transformation. 'It is not a favour; it is an obligation. We must create space and provide resources for women to lead. Our data shows we are doing well at entry levels, but numbers drop at the top. That must change,' said Matlou. He emphasised that leadership development, particularly for women, is integral to Sassa's broader five-year strategy, which includes improving organisational efficiency, enhancing service delivery and reducing poverty. 'An organisation has the responsibility to train, empower and motivate its people. Well-equipped staff translates into improved customer experiences and stronger community impact,' he added. The programme is part of Sassa's drive to create a diverse, inclusive and effective leadership pipeline, ensuring the agency continues to serve South Africans with integrity and professionalism. Matlou encouraged participants to see themselves as catalysts for transformation. 'Each of you represents a step toward a future where women's leadership is the norm, not the exception. Your participation signals change – for yourselves, for this agency and for the people we serve.' As Youth Month draws to a close, Sassa's investment in developing women leaders sends a strong message that inclusive leadership is not just policy – it's a national imperative.
