Rising foreign extremist involvement amplifies militant threat in Malaysia
MALAYSIAN police arrested 36 Bangladeshi nationals suspected of involvement in a radical militant group espousing Islamic State ideology. The group allegedly established recruitment cells to fund terrorism, indoctrinate members, and conduct subversive activities. Five of the arrested face charges under Malaysia's Penal Code for terrorism-related offences, following intelligence-led operations by the Special Branch, as announced by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Friday (June 27). These arrests portrays how the militant threat in Malaysia has evolved, with a significant rise in foreign involvement in extremist movements driven by radical ideologies and violence. From 2022 to 2025, arrests related to militancy have increased, particularly involving individuals from Indonesia and the Philippines, alongside growing extremist ideologies among Myanmar, Rohingya, and Bangladeshi communities. These foreign elements, originating from various conflict zones, are spreading radical ideologies within Malaysia, shifting the threat from local to external sources. While specific data on extremist group numbers is lacking, individuals from countries like Uyghur regions, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Tunisia, Sudan, and Yemen have been apprehended. Most are deported to face trial in their home countries, though some are prosecuted in Malaysia to avoid life-threatening risks if returned. — June 28, 2025

Cyberjaya University suspends two students amid ongoing murder investigation, tightens security
CYBERJAYA (June 28): The University of Cyberjaya has suspended two students believed to be linked to the murder investigation of 20-year-old student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara. In a statement today, the university said the suspensions took effect early Friday and reflected its zero-tolerance policy toward safety breaches. This follows the arrest of three suspects — two women and a man, aged 19 and 20 — who are currently under a seven-day remand to assist police investigations. They were apprehended in Johor Baru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, and are being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Maniishapriet, a Bachelor of Physiotherapy student from Kuching, was found unconscious in her off-campus accommodation on Tuesday morning. She was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived at the scene. Sepang police said there were no signs of forced entry or sexual assault but reported that the victim had suffered head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. Several belongings, including her laptop, phone, ATM card, and cash, were also missing. In response to the incident, the university has implemented tighter security measures at off-campus accommodations, including deploying additional security personnel and increasing patrols. 'The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority. 'We are deeply saddened by the recent events and are taking firm, immediate steps to ensure our community feels protected and supported,' said Vice Chancellor Professor Dr David Whitford. The university urged the public to avoid speculation or spreading unverified information, pledging full cooperation with authorities and the release of verified updates as investigations progress. Police investigations are ongoing. – Malay Mail

Cops nab illegal moneylender for seizing ATM cards of victims
MELAKA: What began as a desperate attempt by dozens of private sector workers here to make ends meet turned into a nightmare when an illegal money lender allegedly seized control of their salaries, withholding their hard-earned wages since March last year. Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said police arrested two suspects on Saturday (June 28), believed to be behind the scheme that saw 62 employees forced to survive on piecemeal handouts after deductions for loans and interest. "The two suspects, aged 56 and 26, admitted they were working for an agent and were paid RM2,500 monthly," he told The Star on Saturday (June 28). ACP Christopher Patit said the 26-year-old suspect had two previous convictions for drug offences and was found to be operating an unlicensed money lending operation from premises at Taman Merdeka Permai in Batu Berendam. "The licence they claimed to be operating under was registered to a gold and jewellery outlet at a different address in Taman Peringgit Jaya," he said. He added that the police raid on the Taman Merdeka Permai premises was carried out following intelligence gathered by his team. ACP Christopher Patit noted that among the items seized during the operation were 64 automated teller machine (ATM) cards, lease agreements, RM6,200 in cash, 13 mobile phones, and a list containing the names of borrowers. "The victims are wage earners in private companies, aged between 30 and 50 years," he said. ACP Christopher Patit said the suspects confessed to holding on to the victims' ATM cards in order to collect loan repayments, only returning the remainder of the salaries once the amounts owed had been deducted. He said the suspects are currently under remand as investigations continue under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and Section 424A of the Penal Code, which pertains to the fraudulent retention of proceeds from the disposal of property. "We are also tracking down the main suspect who employed the two," he added.
