Sherrone Moore seeks undefeated Michigan season, not just in 2025, but every year
Yet, we see him recruiting at an elite level -- even better than Harbaugh -- while also getting wins over Michigan's rivals, even in a year when it appeared the Wolverines had no business doing so.
Moore may have led Michigan to an 8-5 record in 2024, but that's not his intent. With his recruiting and transfer portal prowess, he's looking to build a monster. And though he doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt as, say, Marcus Freeman at Notre Dame, or Kalen DeBoer at Alabama, he's seeking excellence commensurate with the maize and blue's ceiling.
"I'm hell-bent on being undefeated every year. That's the standard," Moore said at Big Ten media days. "You don't want to lose any game. That's the goal (as a coach. You want to be undefeated every year. So for me, yeah, the standard is not 8-5, and the goal is to win every single game and to be successful and hoist the trophy again. Because once you win one, you get greedy. You want to win another. And that's the goal over here.
"But we know it's going to take work, so can't be worried about the past, can't be worried about tomorrow. Because they don't owe you anything, so all we're worried about is today, and that's all we're going to do is work to be the best version of ourselves today."
Michigan finished the season better than any team not named Ohio State in 2024 -- and that's because it beat the eventual national champion Buckeyes. That carried over to the ReliaQuest Bowl, where the Wolverines shocked Alabama -- a team bringing in all of its starters -- despite being significantly shorthanded.
It was a reflection of the head coach, as his confidence going into those weeks permeated through the locker room (though that's not something he'd admit). He never lost his team, and they continued to believe, and it showed on the field.
Moore recounted the killer instinct that his Wolverines had and why they were able to overachieve compared to expectations.
"Just the instilled confidence that they have and the confidence that they got in those games. It wasn't a magic potion or something that we did, and it wasn't the way we changed practice because we practiced the same," Moore said. "But the energy, the focus, the level of confidence that they had in those games was definitely different than the others, and we'll just continue to apply it like that and just work. The leaders on the team saw it. The leaders on the team see it and continue to let our leaders be leaders and empower them as much as possible to make sure we continue that."
Despite the late-season success and Moore's 4-0 record as Michigan's interim coach in 2023, he's not given much of a chance, according to many. In Big Ten head coaching rankings, CBS Sports listed Moore as the 15th-best in the conference, even though he's one of only two in the Big Ten who have beaten a Ryan Day-led Ohio State team (Dan Lanning is the other, though he also lost to the Buckeyes). But if his closing statement in 2024 is any indication, that ranking, and his national perception, will be changing in short order.

Claressa Shields Responds To Post-Fight Complaint: ‘That Was My Moment'
FLINT, MICHIGAN - FEBRUARY 02: Claressa Shields arrives for her undisputed heavyweight title bout ... More against Danielle Perkins on February 02, 2025 at Dort Financial Center in Flint, Michigan. (Photo by) Claressa Shields won her undisputed heavyweight title fight against Lani Daniels on Saturday night, but she nearly found herself in a tiff with a friend and potential future opponent. Franchón Crews-Dezurn, a former undisputed super middleweight champion, was in Detroit for Shields' fight and it seems she was under the impression there would be an opportunity for a faceoff with the GWOAT. This is often done to hint at and promote the next big fight between the winner and their next potential opponent. When no faceoff materialized, Crews-Dezurn took to social media to voice her concern. She called the lack of action "corny AF," and suggested someone in charge was playing games. Shields saw the post and responded to clarify the situation. ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY - APRIL 12: Franchon Crews-Dezurn attends the fight card featuring the ... More IBF, WBA and Ring Magazine welterweight title fight between Jaron Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall on April 12, 2025 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. (Photo by) Here's the exchange between the two fighters. Crews-Dezurn feels she wasted her time coming to Detroit expecting to face off with Shields—cutting it close with another business engagement—only to be ignored by the GWOAT and her team. This is a potential future fight, and Shields doesn't have a ton of opposition to face with a respectable resume. Crews-Dezurn, whom she fought and defeated in both women's professional debut, is one who could help Shields sell a fight. Shields and Crews-Dezurn have supported each other through the years, and there appears to have been a reconciliation online after the initial smoke. Shields asked her followers not to come for Crews-Dezurn in a follow-up post. However, Crews-Dezurn didn't back down from her original stance, though she did tell Shields she loves her. Shields accepted Crews-Dezurn's statement and clearly is trying to salvage their relationship. Shields is at an interesting point in her career. The 30-year-old future Hall-of-Famer just had the last fight on her promotional contract with Dmitry Salita. She is a promotional free agent and could be signed by Matchroom or even Jake Paul's MVP Promotions. That said, Crews-Dezurn is a serious possibility as a next opponent and this story could continue to build over the next few months. Shields has called out Savannah Marshall, another top-notch fighter in her weight region that she's already beaten, Shadasia Green and retired legend Laila Ali. There was reportedly a $15 million offer made to Ali for the fight, but the 47-year-old hasn't responded. Nevertheless, something significant is coming up for Shields before the end of the year.

Former Ohio State Football Star Admits He Felt Cheated In 1 Game vs. Michigan
Former Ohio State Football Star Admits He Felt Cheated In 1 Game vs. Michigan originally appeared on The Spun. With the fallout of Michigan's sign-stealing scandal still looming, one ex-Ohio State star feels he and his teammates were robbed of a fair game back in 2022. Sitting down for an appearance on Cam Heyward's "Not Just Football" podcast, former Buckeyes captain and Steelers fourth-round pick Jack Sawyer gave his first public comments on the matter. Telling his new teammate that something felt "weird" in one of OSU's previous matchups with "The Team Up North." "I'll say this," Sawyer said. "I think they beat us straight up last year, obviously, and the year before. But my sophomore year, we left the field and we were like, 'This feels weird.' We lost by double digits, and it felt like we had beat the [expletive] out of them all game." "You know, we ran a screen pass that we had never put in — not the formation, not the look, anything," the national champion recalled. "And, like, you see them on the sideline, they're doing [the signals], and we change it, we audible to it or whatever, and when we run it, all the D-linemen as soon as the ball is snapped, the linebackers, everybody, they sniffed it out." "It's just good scouting," Sawyer laughed. "Come on." Sawyer is far from the only member of that Ohio State team to say something felt off in that game. And after some initial sanctions and self-imposed penalties, Michigan could reportedly face even more discipline from the NCAA as soon as this week. Big Blue has been hit with a total of 11 combined violations between the governing body's sign-stealing and recruiting investigations, leading many to wonder how steep the punishment could be — with everything from suspensions to vacated wins on the Ohio State Football Star Admits He Felt Cheated In 1 Game vs. Michigan first appeared on The Spun on Jul 28, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 28, 2025, where it first appeared.

Troy Melton throws 7 scoreless innings in 2nd career start as Tigers beat Diamondbacks 5-1
DETROIT (AP) — Rookie Troy Melton pitched seven scoreless innings in his second career start, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-1 on Monday night. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who has 36 homers this season and is a candidate to be traded to a contender, left the game in the ninth inning after being hit on the right hand by a pitch. Melton, who made his major league debut in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, gave up five singles and didn't allow a runner to reach scoring position. He struck out five and walked none. Andy Ibáñez, recalled from Triple-A Toledo before the game, doubled and scored twice. The Tigers have won two straight since losing 12 of 13. Former Tiger Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7) gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings. Detroit took a 1-0 lead on Spencer Torkelson's first-inning RBI single, then doubled its advantage when Ibáñez doubled and scored in the second. Ibáñez made it 3-0 by leading off the fourth with his third homer, and Matt Vierling added an RBI double later in the inning. Dillon Dingler's homer — his third hit of the game — made it 5-0 in the sixth. Arizona's Alek Thomas homered off Tommy Kahnle in the eighth. Key moment The Diamondbacks put their leadoff hitters on in the first and fourth innings, but Melton retired the next three batters each time. Key stat Melton started the year with Double-A Erie, going 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in 10 starts, then went 0-2 with a 2.72 ERA in eight games (six starts) for Triple-A Toledo.
