Andrew Putnam withdrew from the John Deere Classic midway through Friday's second round due to a back injury.
Putnam, 36, started on the back nine and carded a double-bogey at the par-4 18th hole before pulling out.
He was 3-over for his round after opening with an even-par 71 on Thursday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
Putnam won his lone PGA Tour title at the 2018 Barracuda Championship. His best finish this season was a T6 at the RBC Canadian Open last month.

Coco Gauff rallies for third-round victory in Montreal

(Photo credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images) Top-seeded Coco Gauff overcame a slow start to earn a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Russia's Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal. Kudermetova, after winning the first set, broke serve to open the second set. She had another break point at 1-3 but couldn't take advantage, and Gauff soon broke back to pull level at 3-3. Gauff broke again in the final game of the set to pull even, then won the first three games of the final set and cruised to the finish. Regarding the second-set rally, Gauff said, 'I just think I got really upset with myself and I was just like, 'You know, just try to hit the ball hard and deep in the court.' Eventually I was able to turn that anger into something more positive.' The 21-year-old Floridian added, 'It was a tough match today. I thought I did well mentally, especially on the return. I was playing an opponent that served really well. 'Obviously I would like to serve better on my end, but overall, just happy to get through.' The result sends the reigning French Open champion to a fourth-round matchup against Canadian Victoria Mboko, who also won Thursday after dropping the first set. Mboko prevailed 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 against the Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova. In the final two sets combined, Mboko saved four of the five break points she faced. No. 30 seed Dayana Yastremska, the Ukrainian who upset Gauff in the first round at Wimbledon, knocked off another seeded U.S. player on Thursday. She got past No. 8 Emma Navarro 7-5, 6-4. No. 28 McCartney Kessler emerged with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over No. 4 Mirra Andreeva of Russia in a match that featured 13 service breaks. No. 24 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine logged the day's tightest win, slipping past No. 15 Daria Kasatkina of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Kostyuk will oppose Kessler in the fourth round. Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro overtook Japan's Aoi Ito 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and China's Lin Zhu downed the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens 6-2, 6-2. In the final match of the night, No. 9 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan beat Romania's Jaqueline Cristian 6-0, 7-6 (5).

Argonauts go for back-to-back sweep of skidding Blue Bombers

(Photo credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images) The Toronto Argonauts scored a much-needed victory when they won the front end of a back-to-back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Six days later, the two participants in last season's Grey Cup meet again when Toronto travels to Winnipeg. The Argonauts posted a 31-17 victory at home on Saturday behind Nick Arbuckle's 316 passing yards and two touchdown tosses. It was a big win for Toronto (2-5), which needs to string together some victories if it hopes to successfully defend its CFL title. The Argos beat the Blue Bombers 41-24 in last year's championship clash. 'Every win is important, especially when it ends a losing streak,' Arbuckle said after the club ended a two-game slide. 'It's a critical part of the season. We're trying to turn things around and build some momentum, so it was important.' Arbuckle has passed for 2,007 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year. His time as the starter will continue after 2023 CFL Most Outstanding Player Chad Kelly was placed on the six-game injured list last weekend due to the serious leg injury he sustained late last season. Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros threw two picks and was pulled at halftime against Toronto. The two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player failed to finish the previous contest against the Calgary Stampeders due to a neck injury and has been ruled out of the rematch after aggravating the injury. Chris Streveler will draw the start. He completed 11 of 18 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown last week. 'We like what he can do,' Blue Bombers coach Mike O'Shea said of Streveler. 'We like his leadership. He steps in there and he's a pro and he wants to do very well for his teammates. That part of it is so important to him.' Winnipeg (3-3) has dropped its past three games by a total of 56 points, but star running back Brady Oliveira cautioned that there is plenty of time for the club to find its stride. After all, the Blue Bombers lost their first four games last season and were later 2-6 before ending up in the Grey Cup. 'Right now is not the time to panic and not the time to start freaking out or worrying about the three losses in a row,' said Oliveira, who had 82 yards on 13 carries in last week's contest. 'There's still so much time left. We're going to start clicking and it's just a matter of time, and once we start clicking, who says we can't go on a nice little run, a nice little heater -- we did it last year. 'Again, it's different this year to last year, but we've done it before, so why can't it be done again this year?'

Padres add Ryan O'Hearn, Ramon Laureano from O's in latest deal

(Photo credit: Denny Medley-Imagn Images) The San Diego Padres continued wheeling and dealing ahead of the trade deadline Thursday afternoon, making a splash by acquiring All-Star slugger Ryan O'Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles. The Padres also confirmed the acquisition of Kansas City Royals catcher Freddy Fermin and Toronto Blue Jays infielder Will Wagner. The return for O'Hearn and Laureano was six minor leaguers, including highly regarded left-hander Boston Bateman, who moved up to the No. 4 prospect in the San Diego system earlier in the day, according to MLB Pipeline. Both O'Hearn and Laureano are projected to make a major impact for a Padres team chasing the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League West lead. O'Hearn, named to his first All-Star Game this season as a designated hitter, is batting .283 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs through 94 games. O'Hearn, who turned 32 on Saturday, has split his time among first base, right field and designated hitter along with two starts in left field this season. Laureano, 31, is batting .290 with 15 homers and 46 RBIs through 82 appearances in 2025, his first season in Baltimore. He has played all three outfield positions in his career but has spent the most time in center field and right field. San Diego landed Fermin from the Royals in exchange for right-handed pitchers Stephen Kolek and Ryan Bergert. Fermin, 30, has spent his entire major league career with the Royals and broke into the major leagues in 2022. In 67 games this season, he has batted .255 with three home runs, 12 RBIs and 17 runs. Across 251 career games, Fermin is a .268 hitter who has recorded 18 homers, 31 doubles, 80 RBIs and 84 runs. Kolek, 28, is in his second season in the majors and moved from the bullpen to the Padres' rotation this year. In 14 starts in 2025, he is 4-5 with a 4.18 ERA and tossed a five-hit shutout against the Colorado Rockies on May 10. In 56 career games (14 starts), Kolek has amassed a 7-5 record and a 4.56 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 126 1/3 innings. Bergert, 25, is a rookie who made his debut for the Padres in April and has had a mix of starting and relief assignments. Bergert is 1-0 with a 2.78 ERA through 11 appearances (seven starts), with 34 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. San Diego also added Wagner -- the son of newly minted Hall of Famer Billy Wagner -- in a one-for-one trade that sent minor league catcher/first baseman Brandon Valenzuela to the Blue Jays. Wagner, 27, has batted .265 with two homers and 18 RBIs in 64 career games with Toronto (2024-25). Valenzuela, 24, has a .229 average, 12 homers and 46 RBIs in 87 games this year with Double-A San Antonio. In addition to Bateman, the Orioles received right-handers Tyson Neighbors (age 22) and Tanner Smith (22), infielders Brandon Butterworth (22) and Cobb Hightower (20) and infielder/outfielder Victor Figueroa (21). Bateman, 19, is 5-5 with a 4.08 ERA in 15 starts for Class-A Lake Elsinore in his first professional season. He was a second-round pick in the 2024 draft. Hightower moved up to No. 6 in San Diego's prospect rankings on Thursday. A third-round pick last season, he is batting .239 with one homer and 21 RBIs in 40 games for Lake Elsinore.
