Bengaluru Stampede: Angered IPL fans are now demanding for Virat Kohli's arrest using a viral hashtag on 'X'.
#ArrestKohli and #ShameOnRCB hashtags have been trending on the social media platform 'X' for the past 24 hours. The campaign run by a section of angered IPL fans is demanding the arrest of former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli while shunning the franchise. This comes days after RCB lifted their maiden IPL trophy after an excruciating wait of 18 years. The following day, sharing the triumph with their loyal fanbase, the RCB team headed to the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Then, disaster struck. As a sea of fans began swelling in and around the stadium, the sheer volume, and confusion over tickets turned the dangerous situation into fatal for 11 souls that perished near the stadium. With many more injured during the stampede, the celebrations were cut short for fans who waited for years to witness their beloved franchise win.
Then came the countrywide outrage. Who is responsible for this? The team? The players? The franchise? The organizers? The cricket board? The police? The government? The lapses in crowd control, coordination, and accountability became a hotly-discussed topic on social media. And the blame game began.
#ArrestKohli
When it was learned that the Bengaluru Police was not in favour of facilitating RCB at the Vidhana Soudha, the communication between the Siddaramaiah government and the Karnataka State Cricket Association accessed by CNN-News18 revealed, the protesting fans doubled down on their anger.
'Did Virat Kohli meet the family members of the fans who died? Couldn't he have delayed his travel to London to meet the families of those loyal fans? How can he be this inhuman? Or does he only show his humanity during Diwali for advertisements?
SHAME ON RCB #ArrestKohli, (sic)" wrote one user on 'X'.
'He cried when he won a franchise league title. But where were his tears when his fan d!ed? Virat Kohli, you have lost all the respect from our hearts. Just bcz of his decision to leave early for London cost loyal fans their lives💔 SHAME ON RCB #ArrestKohli (sic)."
'I am a Kohli fan, but i demand BAN RCB and #ArrestKohli. Does Cricket Twitter support me? (sic)"
'They demanded parades, and the streets turned red — not with celebration, but with blood. People died. And Kohli? Off to London like nothing happened. This isn't a win. It's a stain. A trophy soaked in tragedy," another added.
Some others used the hashtag in support of Kohli and wondered why the cricketers were facing the brickbats over the tragedy.
'They chanted his name when he scored centuries. Now they blame him for crowd mismanagement? Be real. Virat Kohli left AFTER the event was done. Stop this hate drama. SHAME ON RCB? Really? 🙄 #ArrestKohli — for what? Breathing?"
Arrests
Two days after the horrific stampede, the police arrested six people in connection to the case including Nikhil Sosale of RCB management and Sunil Mathew of the event management company DNA.
In addition to this, two employees of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), working at the ticket counter, have been taken into custody for further questioning in connection to the stampede.
Deaths
The deceased were identified as Bhoomik (20), Sahana (19), Poornachand (32), Chinmayi (19), Divyanshi (13), Shravan (20), Devi (29), Shivaling (17), Manoj Kumar (33) and Akshata. One person, aged about 20 years was yet to be identified.
What Did Karnataka CM Say?
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said: 'no one expected such a huge crowd". Blaming the Karnataka Cricket Association which had organised the event, the CM added: 'We did not organise the event, the cricket association did. Our duty was to provide security. The crowd turnout should have been equal to the number of passes given. What can we do if more people come? Let's see what the investigation finds, whether (lapses by) association or police," he said.
Siddaramaiah announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the kin of each deceased.

MS Dhoni Makes Stunning Admission About CSK Captain: 'Slightly Worried About...'

Last Updated: MS Dhoni said Ruturaj Gaikwad's return will boost CSK's batting for the next IPL. He acknowledged recent struggles and stressed addressing team issues in the mini-auction. Legendary MS Dhoni said on Saturday that Ruturaj Gaikwad's return will strengthen Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) batting line-up in the next IPL season, after Gaikwad withdrew mid-way through the previous season due to an elbow injury. Dhoni assumed the CSK captaincy from Gaikwad, but the five-time champions finished 10th in the table with just four wins from 14 matches, struggling to deliver consistent batting performances. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now," Dhoni said during a private function, indicating that the Super Kings will retain Gaikwad. While pleased with Gaikwad's return, Dhoni mentioned that the team will also aim to strengthen their squad further through the mini-auction later this year. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in," he added. Gaikwad's last competitive game was against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on April 8. The Maharashtrian had signed a deal with English county Yorkshire but withdrew for personal reasons. However, he has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, starting later this month. What MS Dhoni Said About Chennai Super Kings? Dhoni admitted that the Super Kings have underperformed over the last two seasons but stressed the importance of identifying and addressing the team's issues. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also. 'We were like, okay, there are some shortcomings. But first we needed to exactly figure out what were the shortcomings and then look at solutions," he noted. Dhoni expressed his gratitude to the loyal CSK fans for their unwavering support during tough times and promised a better performance in the coming season. 'I feel more often than not we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. In sports, you know you can have a very good time and at the same time there will be periods when you won't be performing well. In CSK, more often than not, we are on the higher side. 'So, we do talk about the processes. But at the same time we do want the result to come to our side. Last year it (result) wasn't there. But looking ahead, we will try to sort out most of the things and we will hopefully be at our best," he detailed. The 44-year-old highlighted the strong bond he has built with Chennai and the IPL team over the years. 'It's a very long relationship that we have had and it started much before the start of IPL… 2005 was the time when I made my Test debut which happened to be in Chennai. So, it started from that point of time. And yes, CSK helped in a big way because all of a sudden I'm spending 45-50 days here." 'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it's not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations," he noted. CSK batting is sorted now because Ruturaj Gaikwad will be coming back: MS Dhoni

Chennai, Aug 2 (PTI) Legendary MS Dhoni said on Saturday the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad will bolster Chennai Super Kings' batting in the next edition of the IPL, after the top-order batter pulled out mid-way through the previous season with an elbow injury. Dhoni took over the CSK captaincy from Gaikwad but the five-time champions finished 10th on the table with just four wins from 14 matches, struggling to cobble together consistent batting efforts. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now," said Dhoni during a private function here, indicating that the Super Kings will retain the services of Gaikwad. While he was delighted for the return of Gaikwad to the CSK fold, Dhoni said the team will try to further strengthen the unit through the mini-auction later this year. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in," he added. Gaikwad's last competitive outing remains CSK's match against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on April 8. However, he has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, beginning later this month. Dhoni admitted that the Super Kings have been well below-par over the last two seasons, but said it was important for the team to identify those grey areas. Dhoni profusely thanked the loyal CSK fans for their wholehearted support during the strife time, and promised to give a better account of themselves in the coming season. 'I feel more often than not we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. In sports, you know you can have a very good time and at the same time there will be periods when you won't be performing well. In CSK, more often than not, we are on the higher side. But looking ahead, we will try to sort out most of the things and we will hopefully be at our best," he detailed. The 44-year-old then underlined the strong relationship he has fostered over the years with Chennai and the IPL team based in the city. Karun Nair finishes England series with 205 runs: Is this the end of his Test career?

A special comeback story seemed to be on the cards when Karun Nair was named in India's squad for the Test tour of England. But after four Tests and just 205 runs to show for it, the 33-year-old finds himself at a crossroads yet again. Despite strong domestic form and a standout tour game, Nair's return to the Test arena has ended on a disappointing seemed to be going right for him in the lead-up. Nair had a stellar Ranji Trophy season with Vidarbha, scoring 863 runs in their title-winning campaign. His performances earned him a spot with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, where he showed flashes of his class. More recently, he smashed a commanding 204 in a tour match against the England Lions in Canterbury, reigniting hopes that he was ready for the highest level once once the main series began, things fell apart. He struggled to find rhythm or confidence. In the Oval Test, he had a good opportunity to make it count after reaching his fifty but threw it away, failing to display the ruthlessness required at this AND OUT OF SYNC Nair's dismissal in the second innings of the Oval Test summed up his series. A short ball from Gus Atkinson struck him on the gloves on his very first delivery, rattling him instantly. From that moment, he looked uncomfortable. Teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen visibly frustrated, even speaking to Nair about not paying attention to field lack of urgency between the wickets further added to the tension. Jaiswal, who was pushing towards a big score, appeared annoyed at Nair's reluctance to run hard. It was a telling sign that, despite his domestic experience, the pressure of the occasion may have overwhelmed FRUSTRATION MOUNTSOn social media, fans have not held back. Many have questioned Nair's place on the side, arguing that it is time to invest in a younger player who can grow into the role. The sentiment is clear — experience alone cannot be the metric for selection if it does not translate into is this the end of Karun Nair's red-ball journey? Or will team management, led by Gautam Gambhir, offer him another chance in this World Test Championship cycle? As the dust settles on this series, tough calls lie ahead.- EndsMust Watch
