The Celtic transfer stance of Cameron Carter Vickers made clear amid 49ers Leeds United link

Daily Record16-06-2025
Leeds United, Sunderland and West Ham United have all been credited with an interest in the US centre-back
Celtic remain relaxed and confident of keeping hold of Cameron Carter-Vickers despite mounting speculation the San Francisco 49ers hope to lure him to Leeds United.
Reports from south of the border insist the newly promoted Elland Road outfit - and its Rangers linked owners - are set to battle it out with Sunderland for the 27-year-old USA international.

Both clubs are gearing up for a return to the English top flight and are understood to be in the market for key defensive recruitments with the transfer window reopen for the summer.

Speculation has been swirling that Carter-Vickers has already been identified as a priority target with West Ham also reported to have shown interest in the former Spurs stopper.
But Record Sport understands there has been no contact made with the Parkhead club and that manager Brendan Rodgers is unaware of any moves to deprive him of his star centre half before the start of the coming campaign.
The Celtic board are also believed to be somewhat bemused by reports of an imminent bidding war for Carter-Vickers who has provided a rock like presence at the heart of a championship winning defence since moving north from London four years ago.
Carter-Vickers spent an initial season on loan in Glasgow's east end before sealing a permanent move the following summer in a deal worth around £6m.
HIs advisers declined to comment when approached by Record Sport but Carter-Vickers is believed to be happy and settled in Scotland and has four more years left to run on his current contract.
Meanwhile, the future of winger Nicolas Kuhn is the subject of some doubt with his former club RB Leipzig believed to be one of a number of Bundesliga outfits currently considering offering him a return to Germany's top flight.
Kuhn signed for Celtic 18 months ago in a £3m deal with Rapid Vienna and starred in this season's Champions League, scoring twice against Leipzig in a 3-1 group stage win at Parkhead and also netting against Bayern Munich in the knock-out stages as Rodgers came within seconds of masterminding a stunning victory at the Allianz.

Fans joke Granit Xhaka has 'no idea who he's joining' as ex-Arsenal star gives hilariously 'generic' answers in Q&A video after joining Sunderland

Granit Xhaka's shock move to newly promoted Sunderland was followed by an incredibly awkward introductory video. The former Arsenal captain, who spent the last two seasons with Bayer Leverkusen, completed a surprise return to English football with Sunderland, who last season sealed promotion back to the Premier League after eight years away. Xhaka, 32, was unveiled this week in a short Q&A segment posted by the club on social media, but his answers quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons. Asked a series of introductory questions, the Swiss international responded with generic answers, prompting fans to question how much the midfielder really knows about his new club. When asked why he chose Sunderland, Xhaka responded simply: 'A big challenge.' On what the club is well-known for, he replied: 'Great club.' Pressed on who he was most excited to play alongside, he answered: 'Everyone.' His short responses did not stop there. When asked who he could not wait to face, Xhaka again replied with 'Everyone,' followed by one-word answers to further questions. 🤔 I'm excited to play alongside... Finish the sentence with Granit Xhaka! 💬 — Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) July 30, 2025 Supporters wasted no time in taking to X to poke fun at Xhaka's answers. 'This man has no idea who he's joining,' wrote one fan. Another added: 'He also doesn't know the name of one player there.' A third joked: 'The only thing he knows is they are in the Premier League.' Xhaka, who made almost 300 appearances for Arsenal and has been capped 137 times for Switzerland, is expected to bring leadership and top-flight experience to a Sunderland squad preparing for their first Premier League campaign since 2017. He was part of Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side that secured the club's first ever Bundesliga title while embarking on an unprecedented 51-game unbeaten run in the 2023-24 season. Sunderland's £17million signing of Xhaka is the latest example of Sunderland's ambition having already splashed out on the likes of Simon Adingra (£21m), Habib Diarra (£30m) and Enzo Le Fee (£20m). The Black Cats have spent over £100m this summer and kick off their Premier League season at home to West Ham on August 16.

Lottie Woad five shots off pace after AIG Women's Open first round

Surrey sensation Woad carded a level-par 72 at a blustery Royal Porthcawl on a day the 21-year-old sensation was under huge scrutiny and Mimi Rhodes shot 69 to finish as the top English player. Woad entered the final major of the year as tournament favourite, despite this being only her second event as a professional. She had won her first at the Women's Scottish Open last weekend, a remarkable success coming on the back of victory at the Irish Open and a tied-third finish in The Evian Championship in her final weeks as an amateur. Woad, playing alongside the last two Open champions Lydia Ko and Lillia Vu, drew large galleries on the South Wales links and showed battling qualities despite not playing her best golf. Ko signed for a 73 and Vu 74 as Woad had 10 pars, four birdies and four bogeys in tough conditions. Woad drained a 20-foot putt to birdie the opening hole, but found a greenside bunker at the third and dropped a shot after failing to keep her chip on the green. Another shot went at the fifth, but Woad holed a long-range putt at the sixth to get back to par. A birdie for Lottie Woad… She's already making moves at Royal Porthcawl 👀 — AIG Women's Open (@AIGWomensOpen) July 31, 2025 Wayward tee shots at the 11th and 15th cost Woad further strokes, but a fine approach to the 14th produced a birdie and another to loud cheers came at the par-five 18th. 'I knew I had to get back to even,' Woad told Sky Sports. 'I'm off early (on Friday) and I'll just try a get a good score together. 'It's a great test, definitely challenges you. If you hit a bad shot you're going to be punished.' Rhodes played in the 2024 Curtis Cup before turning professional and has enjoyed a spectacular year on the Ladies European Tour with three victories. The 23-year-old from Bath added an eagle at the ninth to four birdies for a fine three-under par score of 69 to share fourth place. Rhodes said: 'I've had a few up and down weeks in the last few weeks, so I'm really happy to be striking it well and putting at my best again. 'I was coming in fresh and open-minded, it was so fun to have so many friends and family here supporting me.' Japanese players dominated the top of the leaderboard with Takeda and Okayama firing 67s and Miyu Yamashita recording five birdies and an eagle in a round of 68. Darcey Harry delivers! A birdie from the home favourite and the fans at Royal Porthcawl are loving every second. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 — AIG Women's Open (@AIGWomensOpen) July 31, 2025 Three more Japanese players – Chisato Iwai, Mao Saigo and Shiho Kuwaki – were in a big bunch of players on 69. World number one Nelly Korda and home favourite Darcey Harry, from nearby Penarth and a Royal Porthcawl member, were in a group at two under-par. Georgia Hall, the 2018 Open champion, shot a one-under par 70 and fellow English player Charley Hull carded a topsy-turvy 73. Hull recovered from a double bogey six at the second, and being three-over through three, with five birdies in six holes. Four consecutive bogeys on the back nine dropped her down the field but a birdie at the 18th moved her within seven shots of the leaders.
