Police lathicharge BPSC aspirants protesting outside CM Nitish Kumar's residence in Patna

Indian Express06-05-2025
Protesters demanding release of the supplementary results of Bihar Public Service Commission's (BPSC) teacher recruitment exam (TRE-3) were lathicharged outside Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's official residence on Tuesday after they allegedly attempted to break the barricades in the high-security VVIP area.
An official said repeated requests were made for the protesters to vacate the area and that police resorted to 'mild lathicharge' when the protesters tried to breach the restricted area.
Protesters said several were injured in the lathicharge, including women. Police, however, denied claims of serious injuries.
The protest, which has been going on for months, is against the delays in realising the TRE-3 supplementary results, along with alleged irregularities, including form rejections, duplicate names in published results and a lack of transparency in the recruitment process.
This wasn't the first flare-up in the protest. Aspirants staged a 50-day protest earlier this year at Gardanibagh, which ended with promises from BPSC officials to address concerns. But the supplementary results were not released.
The TRE-3, held in July 2024 to fill 89,581 posts for primary, middle, and secondary school teachers, has been mired in controversy over transparency, with candidates demanding a review of rejected applications and clarity on unfilled seats.
Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, criticised the government for the police action against the protesters.
'Brutally beating youth who are democratically raising their demands, committing injustice and atrocities, is the main hobby of the Nitish- BJP government. This incompetent government nurtures and protects criminals and corrupt people while it lathicharges students, youth, and the unemployed whenever it feels like it. Everyone will unite this time to change this 20-year-old incompetent, wayward, and useless NDA government, that is certain,' Tejashwi said.

To boost surveillance, Govt taps global firms for high-resolution satellite imagery

With high-resolution satellite imagery proving to be indispensable in evolving battlefield situations, the government is learnt to have reached out to multiple global commercial earth-observation satellite players for sourcing it. The initiation of talks with these satellite imagery providers comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor in May, where it has been inferred that China provided live inputs through satellite support to Pakistan. Senior Army officials have since said that when the DGMO-level talks were on, Pakistan flagged information about 'specific vectors' on the Indian side that were being primed and readied for action, likely from satellite inputs facilities by China. 'We are in talks with commercial satellite imagery providers. We have to deepen our surveillance measures,' an official told The Indian Express. The objective of these discussions is to extend the surveillance envelope and be able to do real-time surveillance at the time of conflicts for more efficient military actions, officials said. The move likely includes Maxar Technologies, which operates some of the world's most advanced Earth observation satellites that can capture images with 30-centimetre resolution, detailed enough to discern targets such as infrastructure, buildings, artillery gun systems and even vehicles. When contacted by The Indian Express, Maxar's spokesperson said they 'don't comment on contract negotiations'. While India's satellites, including the Cartosat and RISAT, have played a big role in helping defence forces to strategise, track enemy mobilisation and confirm strike impact, while maintaining real-time situational awareness which prevented any major damage to the country's military assets, these domestic satellites face some limitations in their capabilities. The Cartosat-3 satellite was designed to offer resolution of up to 30-centimetre, but is claimed to provide good quality imagery at about 50 centimetres. Also, Cartosat-3 operates alone, which limits how frequently it can scan the same area, something that is crucial during fast-paced military engagements where the battlefield is limited to a specific sector. Visibility is crucial, which the Pakistanis are believed to have with Chinese inputs. India's satellites, including the Cartosat and RISAT, have played a big role in helping defence forces to strategise and maintain real-time situational awareness, but there are some limitations in their capabilities. The move to rope in global players is aimed at plugging these gaps. India is already working on upgrading its satellite capabilities and has fast-tracked deployment of 52 surveillance satellites under the SBS (Space Based Surveillance)-III programme after Operation Sindoor, to enable efficient and enhanced monitoring of land and sea borders, with stronger imaging and all-weather functionalities. 'They will start launching the satellites from next year onwards and the deployment of all satellites will be completed by 2029,' the official said. In October last year, the Union Cabinet approved $3.2 billion for the SBS-III programme to develop next-generation satellites over the next decade. Under the programme, ISRO will manufacture and launch the first 21 satellites, while private companies will handle the remaining 31. The Defence Space Agency will oversee the operation of the newly launched satellite system. Tejashwi seeks support from Opposition and ruling parties over SIR in Bihar

Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday (July 20, 2025) shared letters he had written to 35 leaders seeking their support in the fight against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, alleging large-scale disenfranchisement. The Rashtriya Janata Dal leader has posted the letter on X. Along with Opposition leaders at the national level, Mr. Yadav has also written letters to ruling coalition leaders at the Centre and the State, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Lok Janshakti Party (RV) national president Chirag Paswan, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) founder Jitan Ram Manjhi, Telugu Desam Party national president N. Chandrababu Naidu, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) president Sudhesh Mahto, and Apna Dal (Soneylal) party president Anupriya Patel. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and CPI-(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya were also among those who received the letters. In the letter, Mr. Yadav said that he was writing the letter with a deep sense of anguish and urgency. 'The farce and tragedy of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) going on in Bihar has shaken the very foundation of democracy through large-scale disenfranchisement. It is a clear indication of how the independent institution of the Election Commission is adamant on eroding public trust in the integrity of our electoral process,' Mr. Yadav said in the letter. He further wrote that every person in the country, irrespective of their background or status, is proud of their vote and the ability to participate in the governance of the country is deeply empowering. Expressing apprehension, Mr. Yadav said that lakhs of voters, for no fault of their own, are being disempowered and humiliated. 'According to the EC press note dated July 16, 2025, around 4.5% of the population has already been left out because they were not 'not found at their addresses'. This is in addition to the 4% who 'probably' passed away or have permanently shifted. Going by these numbers, journalists on the ground and political scientists closely observing the exercise put the disenfranchisement figure at a whopping 12% to 15%. This is unprecedented in the history of our country,' Mr. Yadav said. Raising questions on the timing of revision, Mr. Yadav pointed out that even the Supreme Court had hinted at suspicion. He added that the EC had not done itself any favours by announcing and carrying out the exercise in a haphazard and high-handed manner. Mr. Yadav alleged that the poll body has not been transparent and it is making and breaking its own rules on the fly. 'Worse, they are targeting anyone and everyone who demands transparency and accountability,' Mr. Yadav said. The former Deputy Chief Minister said the experience of the Maharashtra Assembly elections are still fresh in the memory, and he was still waiting for a proper response from the EC. 'Now it is Bihar's turn. This needs to be resisted in the strongest terms possible. Because, if we do not raise our voices and register our strong protest, the same will be carried out in other States as well. The Constitution demands that we defend the republic. We should not be found wanting at this historical juncture,' Mr. Yadav said.
