Ryan McMahon off to fast start with Yankees: `First impressions are usually pretty big'

NEW YORK (AP) — Two games into his New York Yankees career, Ryan McMahon has fans talking. And in this case, that's a positive.
'First impressions are usually pretty big,' he said Sunday after sparking a comeback with a tying, two-run double and some dazzling defense in a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies that stopped a three-game losing streak.
Acquired on Friday from Colorado, the 2024 All-Star went 1 for 3 and made a nifty backhand stop in his pinstriped debut Saturday, a 9-4 defeat.
After the Phillies went ahead 2-0 Sunday against Carlos Rodón on second-inning homers by Nick Castellanos and rookie Otto Kemp, McMahon grounded a Zack Wheeler curveball into the right-field corner in the bottom half.
'He looks great so far. Hopefully he continues it,' Yankees closer Devin Williams said. 'I've obviously played against him in the past and he was a good player and I'm happy to have him here.'
McMahon also singled and was hit by a pitch. He's reached base five times in two games with the Yankees.
His glove work has been even more impressive. McMahon easily fielded J.T. Realmuto's 104.3 mph grounder in the second, jumped to grab Bryce Harper's looper leading off the fourth, then ranged to his glove side for a fifth-inning grounder with two out, slid and spun and then threw out speedy Trea Turner at first.
'Three big plays that stood out to me,' Rodón said. 'It's a whirlwind for a guy that gets traded and has to figure things out. So it's a pleasure to have him.'
McMahon made 129 errors over six minor league seasons. He credited his defense to former Rockies teammates Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story and DJ LeMahieu, who have combined for 13 All-Star selections and 14 Gold Gloves.
'When you have those three guys and you're 20 years old and in your first big league camp, you're going to learn a lot if you just shut up and watch and pay attention,' McMahon said.
McMahon arrived in the Bronx on Friday night following his trade from the Rockies, the team that drafted him in 2013. He took only one suitcase of clothing and his gear, and is staying in a hotel through the homestand.
His wife Natalie and 1 1/2-year-old daughter Austyn Brooke remained behind.
'We'll figure that out, man,' he said. 'My wife, she's a rock star. She's awesome. She'll let me get settled a little bit and then they'll probably come out next homestand.'
Yankees players, led by captain Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton, have been working at getting to know McMahon.
'Real easy to be around. I kind of sat with him a little bit today in the locker room, just kind of shooting it a little with him and he feels, to me, he feels comfortable,' said manager Aaron Boone, a third baseman obtained by the Yankees from Cincinnati at the 2003 trade deadline.
'It's allowing them space, allowing them to be themselves but also trying to really get to know them a little bit and making them immediately feel part of it,' Boone said.
Austin Wells hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly and Trent Grisham an RBI single against Wheeler (9-4), who tied his career high with three hit batters — including two in a row ahead of the double by McMahon, who himself was hit by a pitch in the sixth.
A smile on his face, McMahon left the clubhouse to address some of the logistics of the trade.
'I've got a lot of calls to make today, that's for sure,' he said.

Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck aims for October comeback

After nearly four months of self-imposed exile, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck has publicly commented on his comeback from injury. The 25-year-old addressed supporters in a statement released on the BVB website. Schlotterbeck aims to be back playing Bundesliga football in two months. 'My goal remains to be fit again by October,' Schlotterbeck noted in his statement. 'The rehab work continues to go according to plan. I'm working every day on my comeback and look forward to being back on the pitch with my teammates in the most beautiful stadium in the world.' Schlotterbeck's meniscus tear – incurred in early April 2025 – came at a most unfortunate time. Schlotterbeck registered two assists as a corner taker in his final competitive fixture, a 3-1 home win over Mainz on matchday 27. Schlotterbeck also did extremely well for the German national team in two appearances for Juluan Nagelsmann's Nationalmannschaft during the March international break. The October return renders it unlikely that he'll have a chance to appear under Nagelsmann again in the current 2025 calendar year. GGFN |

Katie Ledecky wins 800m freestyle gold at World Aquatics Championship, defeating rival Summer McIntosh

American star Katie Ledecky won her seventh world title in the women's 800-meter freestyle on Saturday, fending off the challenges of Canadian sensation Summer McIntosh and Australia's Lani Pallister. This World Aquatics Championships was billed as a showdown between Ledecky, the established star of the sport, and McIntosh, her 18-year-old challenger who was attempting to equal Michael Phelps' record of winning five gold medals at a single world championship. When they competed against each other earlier this week in the 400m freestyle, it was McIntosh who emerged victorious but, this time, Ledecky once again demonstrated her dominance over longer distances. They pulled away from the field alongside Pallister and the three of them produced an extraordinary final, separated by no more than a couple of strokes for the entire race. Ledecky eventually touched the wall first with a championship-record time of 8:05.62 while Pallister finished second, just 0.36 seconds slower, and McIntosh rounded out the podium in third, another 1.31 seconds back. 'We got three under 8:10 there. That's pretty incredible,' Ledecky said afterward. 'Lani with the 8:05, Summer with the 8:07. That's incredibly fast and they pushed me all the way. I'm just really happy I could put that together. I just kept telling myself to trust my legs, because I've gotten a little better at kicking. So, I brought it home in the end.' They set off fast – all three swimmers were inside world-record pace at the halfway point – but Ledecky eventually finished just over a second outside the record she set in May. Aside from a short period with about 100m to go when McIntosh edged in front, Ledecky led for almost the entire race, and had enough energy left to hold off any late sprints from her rivals. 'I just came in tonight trying to enjoy this as much as I can,' she added. 'I don't feel like I have anything to lose at this point in my career. I just enjoy it every time I get to walk out in front of a crowd like this and swim against the best in the world.' This victory marks Ledecky's second gold medal at this championship and the 23rd world title of her glittering career after she won the 1,500m earlier this week. McIntosh, meanwhile, has already won three gold medals at this championship – in the 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle and 200m medley – and has a chance to win a fourth in the 400m individual medley on Sunday.

Dan Quinn says Terry McLaurin's trade request is ‘normal business' in NFL

Commanders coach Dan Quinn insisted the trade request made by his team's star receiver, Terry McLaurin, is 'part of normal business' in the NFL and is not a distraction to the team. 'He let me know that that was happening too, so I appreciated that,' Quinn said ahead of the Commanders' training camp practice on Saturday, where McLaurin continues to 'hold-in,' attending practices but not participating. 'We love Terry. Really glad he's here. Hopefully he's out practicing soon. We also understand that there's a business side of this thing that (general manager Adam Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working through. … Somebody asked me if it's a distraction. It is not.' Advertisement Quinn said NFL players are now 'more aware' of contract situations, for themselves and teammates, and that the rest of the team has maintained focus on camp and practice as McLaurin works through his situation. The 29-year-old wideout participated in the start of the Commanders' offseason workout program earlier this year, but skipped organized team activities and mandatory minicamp as he seeks a new deal with the team. He held out the first three practices of training camp before returning to facility in order to avoid the mandatory fines that were collectively bargained between players and the league. The team placed him on the active/physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury, limiting McLaurin to only strength and conditioning work and team meetings. McLaurin has stayed inside the team's facility during their morning workouts, but has has signed autographs for fans at each of the last five practices. Quinn said the receiver observes the team's afternoon walkthrough from the sideline, sometimes standing alongside linebacker Bobby Wagner. Asked if he's surprised the situation with McLaurin has reached this point — a face-of-the-franchise player beloved by fans asking to be traded because of a contract stalemate — Quinn said he tries to 'avoid judging.' 'I'm not surprised,' he added. 'I'm, honestly, I'm glad (McLaurin's) here and I do love coaching him. I try to avoid judging. … I recognize the players are trying to set themselves and their families up so I try to not put myself into that spot. It's too easy to say, 'Man, if I had that much, I'd do this or that.' So I don't go there. I try to support him as best as I can, but we don't discuss the finance part of things. That's the partnership with Adam and I — our strengths and how we work together. Many things we do together. This is not one of them.' Advertisement McLaurin has one year remaining on his contract, which he signed in 2022 and pays him an average annual value of $22.79 million, ranking 18th among receivers. His approximate $53 million in total guarantees ranks 12th, according to Spotrac. McLaurin believes his pay is far below his value as a receiver and should be more in line with some of the top-paid players at his position; nine receivers currently make at least $30 million a year. A week before the start of training camp, McLaurin expressed frustration over the lack of progress in his negotiations with the Commanders and said he wants to be 'valued' and 'appreciated.' 'I think how the market is today, I think it pretty much conveys what guys of my caliber are deserving of, and I feel like I fit in that box because of how I've always carried myself on and off the field and the value I know I bring to a team,' he said. '… I know I'm deserving of what I'm asking for, and I'm willing to stand firm on that, and we just got to see where it goes from here.' The Commanders have said publicly they want to get a long-term deal done with McLaurin. But a sticking point, according to multiple people with knowledge of the negotations, is McLaurin's age. He will turn 30 on Sept. 15, which means he'll be 31 for most of the first year of a new deal. For Quinn, he's hopeful McLaurin will be back on the field soon. 'Knowing there can be emotions, that's the human side,' Quinn said. 'For me as a coach, I give the support, give the insights. .. So that's the way you do it. But it is an emotional time. It's so damn important and each player won't be quite the same.'
