Oman's Al Harthy looks to continue his podium momentum at Spa-Francorchamps
Muscat – Spa-Francorchamps, venue for some of Ahmad al Harthy's most spectacular achievements in motor racing, welcomes the FIA World Endurance Championship for round three of the season on Saturday, when the Omani aims to continue his and Team WRT's podium momentum.
Fresh from a near-victory at Imola in Italy less than three weeks ago, where team-mate Kelvin van der Linde took the chequered flag a mere 0.3 seconds shy of the race win, the duo and fellow Team WRT racer Valentino Rossi are focused on trying to go one better at Spa.
'We're all looking forward to continuing the FIA WEC season at Spa this weekend,' said Al Harthy. Imola was an amazing event and really did kick-start our championship. Everyone at Team WRT did an incredible job, Vale and Kelvin were super quick as always and I was so happy with my performance in both qualifying and the race.
'What can you say about Spa that hasn't already been said? It's an incredible track, one of the best in the world, and we have enjoyed so much success there over the years. I've always loved racing at Spa, the track is an amazing challenge and it's one of those places were I have always seemed to go well. After being so close to the win at Imola, we're aiming to fight just as hard again this weekend.'
Imola very much marked the true start of the 2025 season for the No.46 BMW M4 LMT3 entry with a spectacular performance – Al Harthy fastest by some margin in qualifying and Rossi then sealing pole position in Hyperpole.
In the fight for victory throughout, an unfortunate penalty threatened to derail the squad's podium challenge but an outstanding final stint from van der Linde brought the BMW back through the order superbly to second place, a fraction from the win.
Rocketing up the championship standings into the LMGT3 top six as a result, only eight points shy of the top three, the goal in Belgium is to continue the high level of performance in the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps to solidify their 2025 championship challenge.
Not only that, there is a clear desire for some redemption too after an unfortunate retirement from last year's encounter at Spa. Contact from one of the Hypercar class Porsches midway through hour two ended the BMW's involvement while in the battle for the LMGT3 podium.
Historically, of course, OQ Group, Sohar International, Omantel, Oman LNG, BMW Oman, Oman Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Experience Oman supported racer Al Harthy has a strong affinity with Spa-Francorchamps having enjoyed tremendous success there.
Al Harthy's career highlight at the track to date was Pro-Am class victory in the Total 24 Hours of Spa in 2019 in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, then known as the Blancpain Endurance Cup. All achieved from a pitlane start!

Basketball team begin camp ahead of Asia Qualifiers
MUSCAT, JUNE 27 The Oman national U-16 basketball team has officially kicked off its training programme at an external camp in Bahrain, held at Al Manama Club, as part of its final preparations for the upcoming Gulf regional qualifiers for the FIBA Asia Cup. The qualifiers, scheduled to take place in Bahrain from July 7 to 12, will see only two teams from the Gulf advance to the continental finals. The training sessions are being led by Tunisian head coach Zouhair al Ayachi, with support from Omani assistant coach Ali al Balushi. All 15 players on the squad reported for duty with full commitment. Oman squad includes: Saddam al Sheezawi, Khuzaima al Shibli, Rashid al Eisai, Mohammed al Sheezawi, Abdulrahim al Roushdi, Elias al Obaidani, Al Mulhim al Obaidani, Abdusamad al Subaihi, Muhannad al Battashi, Nawar al Bahlouli, Adam al Hinai, Jaid al Kindi, Saif al Yahyai, Sami al Busaidy, and Sultan al Sinani. Accompanying the team are Ghasan al Busaidy, Director of National Teams and physiotherapist Amer al Zaidi, who is overseeing the players' physical condition and readiness. The first training session focused on technical drills and player cohesion, alongside fitness exercises aimed at boosting the team's physical readiness before the official matches begin. The coaching staff is working to enhance the team's tactical performance, assigning players to specific offensive and defensive roles and implementing strategies tailored to the group stage opponents. This training camp marks the final phase of a long term preparation programme that began before the holy month of Ramadhan. It included intensive weekly gatherings, adapted to the players' school commitments and culminated in a domestic training camp held in Al Buraimi from June 13 to 24. That camp featured practical implementation of tactical plays, with players split into two groups to practice offensive and defensive schemes. The technical staff has placed strong emphasis on improving both the physical and technical aspects of the team, aiming to elevate the overall performance. During earlier stages of the preparation, the team played several friendly matches against local clubs and basketball academies in the UAE, allowing the coaching staff to assess strengths and weaknesses and make necessary adjustments. Oman will compete in Group B of the qualifiers, alongside host Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Group A includes Qatar, UAE and Kuwait. According to the tournament format, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, with the winners of those matches earning direct qualification to the FIBA Asia Cup finals. The U-16 national team hopes to deliver a strong performance that reflects the progress of Omani basketball at the youth level, with aspirations to achieve a new milestone in the Gulf region and strengthen the country's record of international participation.

Sayyid Sulaiman elected as chairman of OFA
MUSCAT: Sayyid Sulaiman bin Hamood al Busaidy was elected as the new Chairman of the Oman Football Association (OFA) for the 2025–2029 term. Sayyid Sulaiman secured 30 out of 43 votes while his opponent, Dr Jassim bin Mohammed al Shukaili, received 13 votes, during the general assembly meeting on Wednesday. The election, conducted through an advanced digital voting system under supervision of OFA election committee and Fifa representative, witnessed attendance of 43 member clubs present. The process commenced with a roll call and proceeded smoothly under the supervision of the OFA Election Committee and Fifa representative Hasan Hassan, and Shaheen Rahimi from Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Salim al Wahaibi, the former OFA chairman, delivered a speech ahead of the election process, highlighting the achievements of the previous board and emphasising the importance of the next phase of the association to ensure the continuous development of Oman's football. New OFA chairman celebrates after announcing the results In the race for the Vice-Chairman position, Qutaiba bin Said al Ghailani was elected after receiving 22 votes, surpassing Nasr bin Hamood al Wahaibi and Sayyid Musallam bin Salim al Busaidy who received 12 and 9 votes respectively. Hajar bint Khamis al Muzainiyah was elected to the women's representative after gaining 25 votes while her fellow candidate Fatma bint Ibrahim al Fazariyah secured 18 votes. The former Oman Olympic coach and former national team player, Mohammed bin Khamis al Oraimi, was elected as representative of the players in the OFA board. As for the Board Member positions, Abdullah bin Salim al Shanfari, Abdullah bin Ali al Rashdi, and Ali bin Ahmed al Kathiri received 21, 19 and 16 votes respectively. The election process commenced under the supervision of the OFA Election Committee and Fifa representative DOORS OPEN FOR ALL Following his election, Sayyid Sulaiman expressed his gratitude to the General Assembly members for their confidence and support. He also extended appreciation to the outgoing Board, chaired by Al Wahaibi, acknowledging their significant efforts and contributions to Omani football. In his remarks, Al Busaidy highlighted the smooth organisation of the electoral process and praised the work of the Election Committee, in addition to thanking the media for their comprehensive coverage. "The doors of OFA are open to all technical experts and specialists. We will soon form specialised committees and we welcome everyone with the passion and expertise to contribute to the development of Oman's football. Our priorities will focus on elevating the top-tier league, enhancing all domestic competitions, and introducing a new Olympic league. We will work in partnership with the General Assembly to ensure continued progress." Sayyid Sulaiman said Also, he emphasised that the national team will remain the top strategic priority.
