On the first day of his trial, Indonesian prosecutor Ida Ayu Sulamsi told the court that the maximum penalty for smuggling more than five grams of the Class A narcotic is the death penalty.
Shaw is accused of smuggling the drugs alongside his Argentine lover, Eleonora Gracia.
Prosecutors say Gracia, 46, was arrested in March at Bali's international airport with the cocaine wrapped in a condom hidden in her vagina.
Authorities allege that she then handed over the drugs to Shaw, 50, who was part of the smuggling plot.
On Thursday, prosecutors at the District Court in Denpasar said the pair violated strict anti-narcotics laws.
After the charges against the pair were read out, a panel of three judges adjourned the trial until July 3.
Gracia and Shaw wore face masks as they sat next to each other in court and remained silent during proceedings.
Shaw, who lives in Perugia, Italy, and works in the entertainment industry, has the word "justice" tattooed on his neck.
Ms Sulamsi told the court: "The defendant has attempted or conspired to illegally import type A narcotics in the form of cocaine weighing 244.07 grams."
According to the prosecutor, Shaw and Buenos Aires-native Gracia planned to meet on March 25, at The Paica Inn – a budget guest house – in North Kuta.

Gracia arrived in Bali on an Emirates flight from Mexico earlier that day.
Ms Sulamsi continued: "Shaw admitted that he had waited for Gracia to receive the cocaine package.
"The officers then searched Shaw's room and found two packages containing 244.07 grams of cocaine in the closet.
"Also 3.09 grams and 0.67 grams of cocaine in Shaw's backpack."
He is the fourth Brit to come before the court on cocaine trafficking charges in recent weeks.
Earlier this month three Brits accused of trafficking £300,000 worth of cocaine into Bali were told they would dodge the death sentence with the prosecutor requesting a slap on the wrist sentence of one-year.
Lovers Jonathan Collyer, 39 and Lisa Stocker, 38, of Hastings, East Sussex, pleaded guilty to bringing the drugs haul onto the holiday island disguised in 17 packets of Angel Delight on February 1.
Co-accused Phineas Float, 31, also of East Sussex, allegedly was the Bali contact who picked up the drugs.

During the third day of their trial, police prosecutor Made Umbara requested that the judge sentence each of the three to a one-year custodial sentence, reduced for time already served for smuggling just under a kilo of cocaine into the party island.
The trio are being held in Bali's notorious Kerobokan prison – known as "Hotel K".
Foreign nationals have been executed in the past for carrying large quantities of narcotics.
Yorkshire granny, Lindsay Sandiford, 69, has been on death row since 2013 after being found guilty of smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Bali.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major drug-smuggling hub despite having some of the strictest drug laws in the world.
On Monday Indonesian authorities arrested 285 people suspected of drug trafficking, including 29 women and seven foreigners, and seized over half a ton of narcotics during a two-month crackdown.
About 530 people are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, including 96 foreigners, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections' data showed last month.
But Indonesia's last executions were carried out in July 2016.

Teenage boys accused of Ballymena sex assault appear before court again
Two 14-year-old boys charged with the attempted rape of a girl in Ballymena have appeared before a judge again. The boys have been charged in connection with an alleged serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in the Clonavon Terrace area of the Co Antrim town last month. The incident sparked days of race-related anti-immigration rioting in Ballymena, with linked sporadic outbreaks of violence in other parts of Northern Ireland. The case was mentioned at a youth court sitting in Ballymena on Wednesday morning. The two teenagers, who interacted with court through a Romanian interpreter, appeared together via video-link from a juvenile justice centre. They were originally remanded into custody at their first court appearance two days after the alleged attack in June. During Wednesday's brief hearing before district judge Nigel Broderick a prosecution lawyer said a file on the case was still being prepared. The prosecutor said she would confirm to the court at the next sitting whether an achieving best evidence (ABE) interview had been completed with the alleged victim. Both boys are accused of attempting to orally rape the girl. At their first court appearance last month, a judge was told both accused denied the alleged offence during interview with police. The teenagers spoke briefly during Wednesday's hearing to confirm they understood what was being discussed in court. The boys were further remanded in custody as the case was listed again for a further review hearing on July 16. Legal representatives for both accused did not raise any objections to their further remand into custody.

New York City doctor pleads guilty to sexually abusing patients in hospital
A New York City doctor charged with raping or otherwise sexually abusing several hospital patients and acquaintances has pleaded guilty. Zhi Alan Cheng, a gastroenterologist, acknowledged filming assaults in his apartment and the hospital where he had previously worked, New York-Presbyterian Queens, state prosecutors said in a statement on Monday after his guilty plea. He is expected to receive a 24-year prison sentence from Queens supreme court justice Ushir Pandit Durant at a hearing tentatively set for 28 August. 'The level of violence and perversion displayed by Zhi Alan Cheng in sexually abusing multiple victims is compounded by the fact that he took an oath to do no harm as a medical professional,' said a statement attributed to local district attorney Melinda Katz. The guilty plea resulted from one of several prosecutions of prominent physicians in New York and other parts of the US on allegations they violated patients in medical settings. As prosecutors put it, authorities arrested Cheng on 27 December 2022 on allegations that he had raped a woman whom he knew at his apartment. That woman discovered videos depicting her and other women being assaulted by Cheng, and an attorney of the survivor approached Queens prosecutors with that information. An ensuing investigation led to the seizure of numerous devices containing videos of Cheng sexually abusing unconscious women who were his patients or over at his apartment. Investigators also seized recreational drugs – fentanyl, ketamine, cocaine, LSD and MDMA – as well as powerful medical sedatives, including propofol and sevoflurane. In August 2023, prosecutors obtained a 50-count criminal indictment charging Cheng, who had been held without bail since his arrest. He faced additional charges in an indictment handed up against him in March 2024 after another hospital-related victim came forward. Ultimately, Cheng, 35, pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and three counts of sexual abuse, all in the first degree. He also entered what is known as an Alford plea to one count of sexual abuse, which means he maintained his innocence on that charge but conceded overwhelming evidence against him would probably get him convicted at a trial. Four of the survivors involved in the case against Cheng were described as hospital victims, prosecutors said. The rest, prosecutors said, were described as apartment victims. 'I thank the brave victim who initially came forward and exposed this abuse,' Katz remarked in her statement. 'We hope the guilty plea allows all the victims to continue to heal.' Authorities have said that the hospital which had employed Cheng cooperated in the case against the disgraced doctor. 'As caregivers, we are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of our patients. It is a sacred trust. The crimes committed by this individual are heinous, despicable, and a fundamental betrayal of our mission and the patients' trust. We are deeply sorry for all that the victims and their families have endured,' New York-Presbyterian hospital spokesperson Angela Karafazli said in a statement. News of the charges against Cheng came about two weeks after former Manhattan obstetrician-gynecologist Robert Hadden had been sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment for sexually abusing numerous patients. Back then, Cheng's attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, said he recognized 'how serious the charges' against his client were. Lichtman on Monday thanked prosecutors for his client's plea agreement and said: 'The charges to which Mr Cheng has pleaded guilty today are extraordinarily serious.'
