Acting ministers key to ensuring continuity ahead of Parliament, says Johari

KUANTAN: Appointing acting ministers to fill vacant Cabinet posts is crucial to ensure continuity, especially with the upcoming parliamentary session set to begin on July 21, said Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Johari, who has been tasked with temporarily overseeing the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, said the move is also necessary to address pressing issues under the ministry's purview.
"When there's a vacancy, the Prime Minister appoints someone to take on the role temporarily. With Parliament about to sit, there will be questions that require answers. For example, the Economy Ministry needs to finalise the 13th Malaysia Plan, so someone has to be appointed to get the job done quickly.
"That's why an acting role is important to resolve critical matters within the next month or two,' he told reporters after officiating the 2025 Kuantan Umno Division Delegates' Meeting on Saturday (July 12).
Yesterday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar announced that Johari has been appointed to carry out the duties and functions of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister with immediate effect.
On May 28, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced his resignation as Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, effective July 4.
Earlier, on June 27, Shamsul Azri announced that Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan had been appointed acting Economy Minister, effective immediately, following the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli on June 17.
Both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi stepped down after failing to retain their respective positions as PKR deputy president and vice president in the party elections held in May. - Bernama

ECRL project hits major milestone

Mega build: Loke officiating the Genting ECRL Project Tunnel excavation works ceremony in Bentong, Pahang.— MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star Breakthrough of Genting Tunnel sets regional railway record BENTONG: Malaysia's major infrastructure project, the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), has reached a significant milestone with the breakthrough of the 16.39km Genting Tunnel – a new regional record. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the Genting Tunnel is set to become the longest railway tunnel in South-East Asia upon its completion. 'It will certainly complement international trade by boosting export-oriented industries and making Malaysia more attractive to businesses,' he said at the breakthrough ceremony yesterday. 'Its last-mile connectivity between Kuantan Port and Port Klang will bring the east and west coasts closer together and ease the transfer of goods along the ECRL network.' Loke said the tunnel breakthrough symbolises not only a major engineering achievement but also the fruitful collaboration between Malaysia and China. This milestone, he added, also reflects the strong cooperation among ECRL personnel at all levels, particularly in managing excavation works across the 41 tunnels along the rail alignment. 'The ECRL is also touted as a game changer for the movement of passengers and freight in Peninsular Malaysia. It will link state capitals, key urban centres, industrial hubs, seaports, airports, and tourism zones while integrating with existing railway lines along its corridor,' he said. The Genting Tunnel has also been officially recognised in the Malaysia Book of Records for two achievements: being the longest railway tunnel and having the highest overburden. Speaking at a press conference later, Loke noted that the tunnels were designed with environmental considerations in mind, especially in traversing the Titiwangsa mountain range. 'The tunnels also reduce the need for cutting down trees,' he said. Loke also praised the strong partnership with China, stating that the project's deliverability had been clearly demonstrated. On plans to extend the ECRL to the Malaysian-Thai border, Loke said the proposal is under consideration. 'The distance from Kota Baru station to the border is about 32km. We are looking into the plan, but it is still at the study and proposal stage at the ministerial level,' he said, adding that the proposal may be tabled for Cabinet approval next year. The estimated cost of the extension is around RM2bil. The ECRL project, with a total estimated cost of RM50.27bil, spans 665km and will feature 20 stations across Peninsular Malaysia. The first phase, stretching from Kota Baru, Kelantan, to the Gombak Integrated Terminal in Selangor, is expected to be completed by December 2026 with operations slated to begin in January 2027. Phase Two, connecting Gombak to Port Klang, is scheduled for completion by December 2027 and is expected to be fully operational by January 2028.

Johari to Umno: Stop dwelling on past, face today's realities

KUANTAN: Umno must stop dwelling on its decades of past glory and instead confront current realities, including winning the support of young voters, to re-establish itself as a strong political force ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). Its vice-president, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, said the party must stay relevant in today's political landscape, particularly by engaging and convincing young voters, who are expected to comprise nearly 40 per cent of the electorate in GE16. "Umno was once a dominant party, but now holds only 26 parliamentary seats. It led the country for nearly 60 years, but in the past two terms, it has operated within a power-sharing government. "The party must learn from its past mistakes, avoid repeating them, and focus on rebuilding. Today's youth are educated, with many holding PhDs, master's degrees, bachelor's degrees or diplomas, and a significant number excelling in TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training). "They evaluate leaders based on present-day actions, not the party's historical achievements. Young people are not interested in Umno's past glories. Instead, they are seeking leaders who demonstrate integrity, accountability and credibility, and who are free from corruption. "There are times when their views may seem overly idealistic, but many of the points they raise are valid," he said in his speech when opening the Kuantan Umno division delegates' meeting here today. Also present was Kuantan Umno division chief Datuk Seri Ab Hamid Mohd Nazahar. Johari said that to gain young voters' support, Umno must meet their expectations, as many now view political issues from a very different perspective. "After completing their studies, young people tend to think differently compared to previous generations. "We must reach out to youths in institutions of higher learning, outside universities, and even those who have just completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, especially now that the voting age has been lowered," he said. Meanwhile, Johari urged constituencies that lost in the 15th General Election not to give up but to intensify their efforts to win in the next general election. "We must not give up on politics, as doing so will diminish our enthusiasm. In our political struggle, we need sincerity and a great deal of patience, and these qualities that will ultimately lead to success. "Everyone must work as a team, regardless of who is contesting, to ensure victory for the constituency. I believe that such determination will help us reclaim seats lost by narrow margins, including the Kuantan parliamentary constituency, which was lost by a majority of 2,866 votes," he said.
