MACC data bribery probe scare triggers SunCon share dumping as price dips 21% before recovering
CONSTRUCTION giant Sunway Construction Group Bhd (SunCon) saw its share price tanked as much as 21% this morning (July 21) before it was able to par losses as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) claimed to have identified two more companies linked to data centre bribery. SunCon which opened at RM5.83 plunged to a two-month low of RM4.93 before intense bargain hunting pushed up its share price to above the RM5.20 level at the time of writing with more than 62 million shares transacted. It had closed up by 20 sen or 3.46% on Friday (July 16) to RM5.98 as it inched closer to its all-time high of RM6.26 posted on June 11 with a volume of 10.67 million shares In fact, SunCon's parent, Sunway Bhd, was similarly impacted with a share price reversal to an intra-day low of RM4.66 or 8% from Friday's (July 18) closing of RM5.06 before staging a rebound to consolidate around RM4.80. For the record, MACC had reportedly identified two more companies that secured data centre projects through bribes given to a project manager of a construction company who was arrested recently. According to a source, several company directors have also been identified during the course of the investigation. 'Investigations also found that the main suspect, the project manager, admitted to demanding 3% of the project value from any company seeking to obtain projects from the prominent construction company,' the New Straits Times cited the source as revealing yesterday (July 20). It was exposed that this was done by leaking project tender prices and assisting to ensure that companies which paid the bribes would secure the tenders. It was reported on Saturday (July 19) that a project manager of a construction company burnt nearly RM1 mil n cash when the MACC raided his home in Petaling Jaya on Thursday (July 17). Sources said that during the raid at his home in Petaling Jaya, the graft buster team discovered nearly RM1 mil RM100 notes that had been burned. The raiding team had also found RM7.5 mil in cash hidden in several pillow boxes along with three luxury watches comprising Rolex, Omega and Cartier as well as jewellery including rings and gold coins. The suspect, along with his wife and two company directors were eventually arrested on Friday (July 18) in connection with the corruption case involving the procurement of a data centre construction project in Johor worth around RM180 mil. The project manager was remanded for seven days, his wife for three days, while the two company directors were remanded for five days. At 12.09pm. SunCon was down 73 sen or 12.21% to RM5.25 with 63.95 million shares traded, this valuing the company at RM6.9 bil. – July 21, 2025

SARA aid provides business capital for housewife
PADANG BESAR: RM100 may seem like a small amount to some, but for Nursyafiqah Sobri, 31, it has become a 'golden capital' that is helping to transform her family's life. Each month, the housewife from Bukit Keteri carefully sets aside RM30 from the RM100 Basic Rahmah Contribution (SARA) assistance received by her husband to use as capital for making and selling traditional kuih. "Alhamdulillah, my husband get to receive the SARA assistance. Although it is only RM100 a month to buy necessities, it truly helps ease our family's financial burden. "Every month, I use RM30 of the assistance to buy flour for making the kuih, and the rest goes towards purchasing necessities like rice," she said. Nursyafiqah, who has two children aged six and 11, said she sells kuih such as cucur badak, keria and popia, which she distributes to several shops in her area. Although her home-based kuih business earns her between RM50 to RM80 a week, Nursyafiqah remains grateful as the modest income still helps ease her husband's burden in supporting the family. "Some days, the cakes sell days, they don't. But I keep making them because at least there's still some income," she said. Nursyafiqah shared that her husband, who works as a security guard earning RM1,700 a month, is the pillar of the family. In addition to raising their two children, the couple also care for their elderly parents who live with them. She believes the SARA assistance is a timely and much-needed initiative by the government, providing meaningful relief to families like hers. The monthly aid, she said, is something they look forward to. "I just hope the government will consider increasing the monthly SARA assistance from time to time as the prices of essential goods continue to rise," she said. Under Budget 2025, the annual SARA assistance has been increased to RM2,100, compared to RM1,200 in the previous year. This initiative aligns with the Madani Economic Framework, which prioritises empowering the lives of low-income individuals through equitable opportunities, improved living standards, and comprehensive social protection. To further enhance public convenience, the government has expanded the range of goods eligible for purchase under the SARA programme to 14 categories. Additionally, the number of registered participating retail outlets and supermarkets has grown significantly, rising from 700 last year to over 4,100 premises nationwide as of July 2025.

'We're not involved', says MN Holdings over MACC probe on RM180mil data centre project
KUALA LUMPUR: MN Holdings Bhd says it is not involved in a RM180 million data centre project in Johor that is under investigation by the authorities. "The company has not participated in the said project in any capacity - directly or indirectly, and therefore has no connection to the ongoing probe," it said in a statement today. "We understand that various names have surfaced or been speculated upon following the announcement of additional firms being identified. However, we wish to stress that MN Holdings Bhd is not among them. "MN Holdings remains committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance, ethical practices, and regulatory compliance in all its operations," it added. Last Friday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) reportedly had remanded a manager from a construction company, along with his wife and two company directors, over suspected corruption involving procurement tenders for the construction of the RM180 million data centre. One of the suspects had purportedly tried to burn nearly RM1 million in cash to destroy evidence. Reports quoting sources said the suspect had attempted to destroy the cash out of panic following the raid carried out by MACC at his house last Thursday. A team of MACC officers discovered bundles of RM100 banknotes, amounting to nearly RM1 million, in the process of being burned in a bathroom. On Sunday, FMT said the MACC had identified two more firms that allegedly secured contracts linked to the project.
