Dalit student's suicide at CUK triggers outrage, allegations of cover-up

1 2 Pic: File photo of students staging a dharna at CUK Kalaburagi; Attendance sheets at CUK show a caste column Kalaburagi: The alleged suicide of Jayasri Nayak, 20, a student from Odisha, has raised many questions about the educational atmosphere at Central University Karnataka (CUK) here. As authorities broke the door of the room — where the body was found — without informing police, activists suspect efforts to destroy evidence. Since the student belonged to the Dalit community, casteism is also being suspected. Agitation regarding the death is getting traction by the day. P Nandakumar, who was a student for 8 years from UG to PhD and was president of Ambedkar Vidyarthi Sanghatane at CUK, told TOI that atrocities against Dalit students have been ongoing in the varsity since its inception. "However, there was space to agitate when a Dalit student committed suicide in 2017. For the past 3-4 years, even our right to protest has been suppressed. If we insist, an FIR is filed against us. It started in 2019 when Rahul, a student, questioned performing religious rituals on campus when the varsity is a secular place. Earlier, the varsity's SC/ ST cell provided financial assistance of Rs 20,000 for Dalit students intending to present their papers at national and international platforms. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Now, it has been stopped. Even the OBC cell is shut. So is the case with the book bank and computer facility for Dalit students preparing for competitive exams. Now, SC/ST researchers are forced to pay fees on a par with general students. A caste column was introduced in the attendance sheet. Though they announce in press releases that accommodation and food are free for SC/ ST students, rent and fees are collected. Only when we oppose it, it gets refunded. Though Article 28/1 says there should not be any religious symbol in educational institutions, they have installed a Saraswati statue long before the installation of an Ambedkar statue. There are hundreds of cases to prove our allegations," he explained. Dwarakanath CS, former chairman of Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, said he was prevented by security personnel from delivering a speech on Ambedkar last year. "I'm told there have been clashes between Dalit students and the varsity management for years. When we visited the campus at the request of Dalit students, we just offered a garland to the Ambedkar statue but were not allowed to speak about him. Many Dalit students shared that they are depressed by the casteist atrocities. Now, both the govt and the varsity management should consider the suicide of a Dalit student seriously," he said. K Neela, a social activist in Kalaburagi, alleged that the varsity is turning anti-women and anti-minorities too in recent years. When contacted, prof Battu Satyanarayana, CUK vice-chancellor, said: "The anti-women allegation is false. Girl students outnumber boy students in our varsity. We are providing all facilities to all students irrespective of caste and creed. During admission, we follow reservation rules. It is our duty to provide equal opportunities to all. We have not introduced caste columns in attendance. We will ask caste and category only during the admission to follow the reservation system. There is no caste-based discrimination in the campus. We are following UGC guidelines and norms specified by the Constitution." Responding to the recent suicide case, the VC said they did not know the student's caste until it was raised. "Security personnel might have broken the room door assuming that she might be alive and needed immediate medical care. After learning about her death, we immediately informed the police, who in turn informed her parents. Her parents informed us that she had some health issues," he stated. Alignment concerns delay Vizhinjam-Navaikulam outer ring road project

Thiruvananthapuram: The outer ring road project from Vizhinjam to Navaikulam in the state capital is set to be delayed. Union road transport minister stated in Parliament that the current alignment has serious design flaws and was now under review. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In response to a question in Lok Sabha raised by Attingal MP Adoor Prakash, Gadkari confirmed that the initial alignment, determined by the state feasibility study, would result in extensive hill cutting and major ecological damage. As a result, the alignment was being re-examined in coordination with the state govt to reduce environmental impact. Originally pitched at 62.7km with an estimated construction cost of Rs 8,000 crore, the project is to be built and managed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme. Affected landowners, many of whom surrendered their land documents to the revenue department over two years ago, have been left in limbo, waiting for compensation. Even after project approval, compensation is only due once final alignment and clearances are endorsed by the competent authority, a move the MP calls 'a grave injustice'. Compensation delays stem partly from stalled environmental clearance: the southern sector (Vizhinjam to Thekkada) received clearance in 2023, but the northern section (Thekkada to Navaikulam) remains legally blocked after a May 16, 2025, Supreme Court ruling annulled post-facto green clearance provisions. The State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) term also lapsed in March and the authority has shifted to the central ministry, further delaying approvals. Meanwhile, land acquisition costs have doubled, from an initial Rs 1,800 crore to over Rs 3,800 crore, and coverage includes 314 hectares across 24 villages. Valuations are set to expire in Aug, raising urgency, since delayed payment triggers 12% annual interest under the Compensation Act. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A high-level meeting chaired by chief minister's principal secretary K M Abraham earlier this month instructed NHAI to finalise land acquisition and disburse compensation within two months. Despite Rs 700 crore transferred to NHAI in Jan, no payments have been made. Landowners action council, represented by S Chandramohan Nair, threatened a hunger strike if disbursement doesn't begin soon. Adoor Prakash insisted that the state must take urgent steps to realise the project and ensure compensation was delivered without further delay. Earlier, PWD minister P A Mohamed Riyas informed the state that the final approval for the project would be granted by the end of July.

Punjab vigilance raids realtor hours after he joins BJP; political vendetta, says leader

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Saturday conducted searches at three premises linked to real estate developer and former Akali leader Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh's Sector 2, barely 12 hours after he was inducted into the BJP by Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini. Gill and and the BJP strongly condemned the action, accusing the AAP government of indulging in 'political vendetta'. The Vigilance Bureau, however, claimed to have uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers — the Mohali-based realty firm founded by Gill — and entities linked with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia who is currently in jail after being arrested in a disproportionate assets case. Gill was the 'halka in-charge' of Kharar for the Akali Dal till he quit the party in July. He was widely tipped to join AAP, especially after ruling party's Kharar MLA, Anmol Gagan Maan, announced her resignation and decision to quit politics on July 19. However, she took back her resignation the very next day. A senior vigilance official said that the searches at Gill's residence was in furtherance of the investigations into an FIR (No. 22, dated June 25) registered at Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Police Station Flying Squad, SAS Nagar, against Majithia. The official added that searches were carried out three premises linked to Gillco Developers in Punjab and Chandigarh. 'During the searches, the Bureau uncovered details of suspicious financial transactions running into crores between Gillco Developers and entities linked with Majithia. Further investigations are ongoing,' the official said. Majithia was held on June 25. According to the FIR registered by the Vigilance Bureau, its preliminary investigation has revealed that more than Rs 540 crore worth of 'drug money' was laundered in several ways and Majithia had allegedly facilitated it. The official added that after registration of FIR against Majithia, certain suspicious financial links and transactions between Gillco Developers and some of the entities had come to notice. 'These were developed in a meticulous manner by conducting investigations. To conduct further in-depth inquiries into these transactions and to gather relevant evidence, the Vigilance Bureau conducted these searches in accordance with procedure established by law,' the official said. Bureau officials said several incriminating documents, electronic devices and other evidences have been seized in the ongoing searches. An official spokesperson said that the search operations were conducted strictly in accordance with the legal procedures and the search was still underway. 'Electronic devices and relevant documents were also seized during the searches', he added.
