Gurugram, 2 May, 2025: India Internet Day (iDay), India's definitive startup event for tech entrepreneurs hosted by TiE Delhi-NCR at The Leela Ambience, concluded today, marking a high point in redefining India's position as a rising global digital power. In its 14th edition, the event brought together more than 1,200 attendees, 60+ investors, over 50 speakers, and 40+ partners, alongside policymakers and industry leaders. The focus was on driving collaboration to propel India toward its predicted $1 trillion digital economy by 2030.
India's digital economy is expanding at double the pace of overall GDP growth, with projections showing it will contribute to one-fifth of national GDP by 2029. By 2025, India's internet user base is expected to cross 900 million, with rural adoption playing a significant role in driving growth. Event sessions discussed how this momentum creates a fertile ground for startups, digital platforms, and tech ventures to scale, positioning India as a leader in the global tech landscape.
Opening the conversation on India's policy environment shaping the future of the digital economy, Dr Abhijit Phukon, Economic Adviser, Department of Financial Services, Government of India, stated, 'As innovation evolves rapidly, our regulatory approach must be equally adaptive and predictive. The goal is to ensure that digital and financial ecosystems remain secure while enabling innovation to thrive. A balanced regulatory environment builds trust, protects consumers, and allows startups to grow responsibly. The government remains deeply committed to collaborating with industry to strike that balance and drive inclusive digital growth.'
'India Internet Day 2025 reaffirmed its role as the crucible where India's digital doctrine is not just discussed—but actively redefined,' said Upasana Sharma, Executive Director, TiE Delhi-NCR. 'With over 1,200 attendees, 60+ investors, and 50+ speakers, the event became a high-voltage hub for bold ideas on artificial intelligence, startup scaling, and Bharat's digital acceleration. At a time when India is poised to lead the global AI revolution, iDay provided a critical platform for innovators, policymakers, and technologists to converge. The space tech session led by IN-SPACe was particularly electric—signaling India's next leap into frontier technologies and deeptech. Events like iDay are no longer just
conferences; they are launchpads for India's tech-powered future.'

Superpower.' Vijay compared the 2014 era of startup funding to 'crossing flyovers in Delhi's Outer Ring Road.' He explained, 'The first flyover you cross is angel funding. For the second flyover, there's no series A funding because all are tourist VCs. At that time, VCs were opening a few bases in India. Now, Outer Ring Road has all the flyovers. I think funding in India is not that big of a problem. Now, investors will value you if you are building for India in India.'
On AI, he noted, 'So it is my reading that currently we consider AI as an agent, saathi, or assistant for us. I've started using it for many deep insights. But actually, after a few days, we will be the agents of AI. It will no longer be just an agent to us.'
iDay 2025 became a crucial platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their techdriven startups. The event focused on cutting-edge topics such as AI, 5G, fintech, digital public infrastructure, e-commerce, space tech, startups, policies, smart cities, and regional internet trends. Experts discussed how these technologies are creating opportunities for businesses to accelerate and how government initiatives, like the Digital India Programme, are facilitating growth. These initiatives aim to position India as a digital superpower by 2030.
At iDay 2025, transformative sessions inspired the ecosystem—Col Sanjeev Yadav, Director, UIDAI, explored how Aadhaar authentication can power startup innovation, while Air Vice Marshal Retd. Dhananjay V Khot, AVSM, VM; Director, Strategy and Planning, IN-SPACe, highlighted India's bold leap into the spacetech frontier.
The event also highlighted India's digital economy growth, the expansion of internet connectivity, and how AI is shaping industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and innovation. Experts discussed how other open tech frameworks are reshaping India's digital landscape, empowering startups to scale while improving access to services for underserved communities.
With indicorns on the rise, Kunal Bahl, Co-Founder, Titan Capital and Snapdeal, joined the discussion on 'Indicorns: Building India's Enduring Startup Foundation—Release of India's Indicorn List 2025.' SCR on fast track, plan to be ready in a year

Lucknow: The development of State Capital Region (SCR) plan, modelled on the lines of Delhi-NCR, will be completed in a year with a budget of Rs 71 crore. The implementation of the plan will span over the next five years. The SCR will cover six districts — Lucknow, Barabanki, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, and Rae Bareli. The World Bank will extend technical support to this initiative, drawing from global best practices. The proposed SCR will encompass a total area of 26,700 sq km, aiming to promote integrated development across the region. The plan focuses on strengthening high-speed inter-district connectivity, upgrading infrastructure, and promoting balanced growth. Enhanced transport networks such as expressways, ring roads, rapid rail, and the completion of missing road links will be key components. These efforts are expected to improve mobility, boost industrial and commercial growth, and create new employment opportunities. A committee meeting chaired by Keshav Varma, chairman of the high-level committee overseeing SCR, was held at the Parijat auditorium of the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) on Friday, where a detailed presentation on the SCR plan was made. Key officials present included principal secretary, housing and urban planning, P Guru Prasad, principal secretary, urban development, Amrit Abhijat, divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob, LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar, director, housing board, Ravi Jain, chief town planner KK Gautam, representatives from the World Bank, urban planners, and engineers. Consulting consortium comprising AECOM India Pvt Ltd and Aegis India Consulting Engineers Pvt Ltd has been selected to prepare the GIS-based regional master plan. LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar said that the consultants would prepare the plan in one year and identify project components aligned with the plan over the next five years. They will also be responsible for preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) and overseeing on-ground implementation. The World Bank team, present at the meeting, assured knowledge sharing from successful global models where similar regional planning was carried out. They also emphasised the inclusion of cultural and heritage conservation within the SCR development framework. Officials said that while the city was already relatively developed, the SCR project would ensure parallel development in surrounding districts. This would reduce migration to the capital for jobs, education, healthcare, and business. As urban amenities extend to semi-urban and rural areas, residents will benefit from improved local infrastructure, better living conditions, and enhanced livelihood opportunities.

FM asks PSBs to step up deposit mobilisation, deepen corporate lending

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday told public sector banks (PSBs) that sustained efforts are needed to improve deposit mobilisation to support ongoing credit growth. She also emphasised the need to deepen corporate lending in productive sectors while maintaining robust underwriting and risk management standards. The finance minister chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to review the performance of PSBs for FY2024–25. Key areas discussed included financial parameters, credit offtake, financial inclusion, customer service, grievance redressal, digital banking, and cyber security. The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary; Secretary, Department of Financial Services, M Nagaraju; managing directors of PSBs; and senior officials of the Department of Financial Services (DFS). 'PSBs were advised to undertake special drives, make effective use of their branch networks, and deepen outreach in semi-urban and rural areas,' the finance ministry said. The finance minister also directed banks to ensure faster grievance redressal, offer simplified digital platforms, and provide multilingual services both online and offline. 'Maintaining clean, customer-friendly physical branches and expanding in metro and urban centres to keep pace with urbanisation was also highlighted,' the finance ministry added. During the same period, net non-performing assets (NPAs) of PSBs declined sharply from 1.24 per cent to 0.52 per cent. Net profit increased from ₹1.04 lakh crore to ₹1.78 lakh crore, and dividend payouts rose from ₹20,964 crore to ₹34,990 crore. Sitharaman was also apprised that PSBs are adequately capitalised, with their capital to risk-weighted asset ratio (CRAR) standing at 16.15 per cent as of March 2025. She highlighted the importance of adequate staffing in banks, stressing that all existing and arising vacancies must be filled promptly to improve service delivery. Banks were also encouraged to scale up branch expansion in underserved areas such as the North-east. The finance minister underlined the need to strengthen the Business Correspondent (BC) network to ensure last-mile access to banking services, especially in rural and remote regions. Sitharaman was briefed on the progress under the New Credit Assessment Model for MSMEs, launched on 6 March 2025, under which 1.97 lakh MSME loans amounting to ₹60,000 crore have already been sanctioned. Banks were instructed to scale up implementation of the model to broaden access to capital and expedite credit flow to small and medium businesses. 'The finance minister has asked banks to increase aggressive lending following the interest rate cuts. Banks should provide loans to as many people as possible and focus on higher lending compared to last year,' a source said. Banks were also advised to expand their presence in GIFT City to support India's ambitions in international financial services, explore global opportunities, and increase participation in the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX). On Thursday, Sitharaman chaired a meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, with officials of GIFT City and the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). 'Lending to the energy sector, particularly in renewable and sustainable areas, was underscored as a national priority to advance India's green growth agenda. In line with the Budget 2025–26 announcement to develop indigenously designed small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), banks were advised to develop credit models to support this critical sector,' the finance ministry added.
