
Safai to property tax: Gurgaon civic body feels heat as grievances cross 27k mark
Gurgaon: As many as 27,312 unresolved complaintson sanitation, sewage and property tax problems await action from MCG across various platforms, data accessed by TOI reveals.
According to MCG records, there are 17,822 pending complaints on the GMDA portal, while 3,762 complaints through the social media grievance tracker (SMGT) portal remain unaddressed.
Moreover, 3,455 complaints on the Swachh City portal, 1,654 on the CM window, 550 on the PM window, and 69 on the Sameer app are yet to be processed by MCG.
Out of the total complaints, 7,657 remain unresolved since 2024, 6,216 were raised over the past 60 to 90 days, 6,170 over 30 and 60 days, and 2,685 over the last month.

Sanitation, sewerage, road sweeping, and development works constitute 78.4% of the total pending complaints.
Across the city's four zones, unresolved sanitation-related grievances amount to 5,526 complaints. The engineering department of the civic body has 5,961 outstanding sewerage complaints awaiting resolution.
Moreover, there are 2,221 unaddressed complaints about road sweeping operations. The engineering department also has a backlog of 7,712 complaints regarding development works.
On Wednesday, MCG constituted a grievance redressal cell to address complaints received across various govt platforms.
"We have constituted a grievance redressal cell. It will focus only on resolving these complaints and minimising the pendency in redressal," said a senior MCG official.
The newly formed cell will be headed by MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya and will have additional commissioner Ravinder Yadav, joint commissioner Vishal, deputy town planner Siddharth S Khandelwal and MCG expert Anita Phalswal as members.
Meanwhile, according to residents, one of the causes for an increasing number of complaints is delay in appointing an agency for drain cleaning. "We have filed several complaints on these issues, but they remain unaddressed. Moreover, the civic body is yet to initiate tenders for drain cleaning across the city. As the monsoon approaches, these complaints are likely to shoot up," said Kundan Lal Sharma, general secretary of Sector 21 RWA.

Drainage upgrade and white-topping works have been under way for several months, but with little attention to pedestrian safety, as TOI had reported earlier. The irony is hard to miss — a project intended to modernise road infrastructure is putting people at risk because of poor execution. Drainage covers are missing, footpaths are disassembled, and there is a distinct absence of barricading or signage. A BWSSB engineer told TOI that the water board's works have been completed on one side of the road. "We had permission to shift utilities and did all our work on one side of the road. Currently, BBMP has taken up work and is installing huge pipelines to collect rainwater. We have nothing to do on the road currently. Govt and Mala villagers undertake eco-drive project under MGNREGA
Udupi: An environmentalist is serving as a vital link between the govt and the public, facilitating a conservation initiative under the MGNREGA programme that merges ecological restoration with rural employment in Mala village. In collaboration with the social forestry department, residents of Mala village are undertaking an ecological restoration project under the MGNREGA scheme. The effort began in Sept last year when environmentalist Arathi Ashok submitted a proposal for a green project on the cut road in the village. With 5–10 locals ready to participate, the project was greenlit, and by April, the work order was issued after an inspection by the Range Forest Officer (RFO). Arathi told TOI that the project involves planting 150 saplings (local species supporting the biodiversity of the Western Ghats) on a 1.5km stretch of the two-kilometre Gundipalke-Mala road. A total of Rs 2 lakh was sanctioned, covering material costs and wages. The road is lined with saplings protected using bamboo fences and 150 acacia sticks, safeguarding them from grazing animals. Locals Govinda Gowda and Santhosh took the lead in managing and distributing bamboo fencing materials to each planting spot, with 30 saplings assigned per location. An MGNREGA project board has also been installed on-site. She said that so far, 70 saplings were planted manually, with work timed perfectly in June when the soil is soft and rainfall is manageable. The initiative helps in environmental restoration, but also offers a valuable income opportunity, especially for rural women, with a simple process of taking before and after photos of their work to ensure transparency and credit. "Though such projects are popular in Kerala, they remain under-utilised in Karnataka. However, the Mala initiative is proving that change is possible when local people take the lead. Looking ahead, plans are in place to dig percolation pits in the next phase, particularly in areas where afforestation was taken up by the social forestry department. Coming Sept, attention will turn to weeding and fertilising the planted saplings," Arathi said. The success of this project lies not just in the green cover but in its potential to attract more funds, empower rural communities, and combat poverty through sustainable livelihood. "For initiatives like this to truly scale as a national model, panchayat members must play an active role in informing citizens about such govt-supported schemes, something that, unfortunately, rarely happens in practice. While there is institutional support and intent to expand green cover, these programmes often remain underutilised simply because people are not made aware of them. Concerned authorities must treat such awareness as a mandatory responsibility," she said.

Year after rain damage, repairs begin at Taj dome as tech survey traces leak points
Agra: Nearly a year after rainwater seeped through the Taj Mahal's main dome, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has begun the only the third major repair of the iconic structure's dome since 1652. The restoration work follows an extensive technical survey using drone imaging, thermal scanning and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to trace the exact source of the leakage. The repairs are expected to take six months, with no impact on tourist access. The repair focuses on the stones beneath the dome's finial, where water leaked through after heavy rains in Sept 2024. ASI launched a probe shortly after the incident, and officials said at least three points were identified where seepage occurred. A drone survey helped identify the exact points from where water had trickled down. Scaffolding was erected earlier this month to access the upper dome. Prince Vajpayee, senior conservation assistant, ASI, told TOI that following technical inspection, a physical examination of the site would begin. Earlier, filling gaps between marble stones on the dome was done using suspended cradles. However, the current conservation work requires scaffolding," he said, adding that the structural base of the Taj is strong and intact. Sources in ASI's Agra circle told TOI that a "committee comprising conservators, technicians and experts will assess the strength of the scaffolding to identify whether it is capable of carrying the load of the labourers to launch the repair work. The report is expected within the week." The Taj Mahal's first documented leakage dates back to Dec 4, 1652, when Mughal prince Aurangzeb inspected the monument during the rainy season and reported the issue to his father, emperor Shah Jahan. In his letter, Aurangzeb wrote: "The dome of the holy tomb leaked in two places towards the north during the rainy season and also through the fair semi-domed arches, many of the galleries on the second storey, the four smaller domes, the four northern compartments and the seven arched underground chambers which have developed cracks. .. During the rains last year the terrace over the main dome also leaked in two or three places." Repairs were carried out following this inspection. In 1872, British engineer JW Alexander oversaw repairs to address similar issues. Later, in 1941, a three-year conservation project costing ₹92,000 was carried out under British supervision, based on recommendations by an expert committee. The dome was waterproofed using hydraulic lime, and several stones were replaced and reset. Built between 1631 and 1648 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal remains one of the world's most visited monuments. As per data shared in Rajya Sabha during this year's Budget session, it earned over ₹297 crore through ticket sales between FY 2019-20 and 2023-24 — the highest among all ASI-protected monuments.
