Peacock has announced a Sept. 4 premiere date for The Paper, a new series from The Office creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman that will serve as something of a sequel to the classic Emmy-winning NBC sitcom.

The show marks a return to the mockumentary format that made The Office, starring Steve Carell, an Emmy-winning staple, and cleverly ties into The Office universe without rehashing old ground. As Peacock previously revealed during NBC's Upfront presentation, the series follows the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch as they uncover a new subject: a historic Midwestern newspaper and the determined publisher trying to revive it.
That publisher is played by Domhnall Gleeson, leading an ensemble that includes Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and Oscar Nuñez, who reprises his role as Oscar Martinez — now working in Toledo, Ohio. While most of the cast are new characters, Nuñez's return marks a direct line back to the world of The Office.
While The Paper brings a new location, new characters, and new workplace dynamics, it sticks to the signature DNA that made The Office so beloved. Set in Toledo, Ohio, the fictional newsroom — called The Truth Teller — becomes a battleground for saving local journalism.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels teased more about what to expect: 'It's about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that's much reduced from its glory days. A lot of the story lines are about how this guy, Domhnall Gleeson's character, is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn't have the budget for hiring reporters, and he has to use all the staff that work there on a volunteer basis to be reporters. They're completely untrained and don't know what they're doing,' Daniels explained.
Expect to see several Office alums pop up, beginning with Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer. The duo, who cohosted the Office Ladies rewatch podcast, will be making a special cameo on The Paper.
'We were invited by Greg,' Kinsey revealed during an April appearance on the Today show. 'We showed up on set, and not only was Oscar there, but so many of our former crew members, too. The crew really was like our extended family, and we've stayed close over the years.'
'It was so special to be back with everyone — and to step in front of the camera again,' she added.
Other guest stars include Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim, Mo Welch, Nate Jackson, Nancy Lenehan, and Duane Shepard Sr.
The Office, which aired from 2005 to 2013, earned 42 Emmy nominations and five wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Daniels added that The Paper is, 'a fruitful premise. There's a tremendous history for local papers. The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody's news for free, and all the ad revenue going to Google.'
The Paper will debut with four episodes on Sept. 4 exclusively on Peacock, and then roll out two new episodes every Thursday through Sept. 25.
