‘Big Bang Theory' Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' Ordered to Series at HBO Max

The 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' has officially been greenlit at HBO Max, Variety has learned. The was originally announced as being in development back in April 2023. As previously reported, the cast of the series is made up of 'Big Bang Theory' alums Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie. The series hails from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady. More from Variety As HBO Max Returns, Max Account on X Says 'Twitter Won't Let Me Change My Name Back' Max Changed Back to HBO Max on Wednesday WBD Acquires Stephen King's 'The Institute' for Max in Europe 'We're excited to be continuing the legacy of 'The Big Bang Theory.' Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn't be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team,' said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content. HBO Max has also officially confirmed plot details for the show for the first time. The logline states: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from 'The Big Bang Theory.' As the title implies, things don't go well.' 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on 'The Big Bang Theory,' would have loved, hated, and argued about,' Lorre said. The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Lorre is under an overall deal. Lorre, Penn, and Prady are also executive producers. 'I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from 'Big Bang Theory' would watch,' Penn said. 'I couldn't resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people.' This will now be the fourth show in the 'Big Bang' universe. Aside from the mothership show, which ran for 12 highly-rated seasons on CBS, the prequel 'Young Sheldon' wrapped up its own seven-season run at the broadcast network in May 2024. A spinoff of that show, 'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage' starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, debuted on CBS on Oct. 17, 2024. This also marks the first series pickup announced since Max officially rebranded (or re-rebranded) itself as HBO Max. 'The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I'm certain that joy will come through the screen,' Prady said. 'Putting characters we loved from 'The Big Bang Theory' into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.' 'Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with 'The Big Bang Theory,' and we can't wait to see the universe continue with this new series,' added Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. 'With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist. We thank our partners HBO Max for joining us on this next adventure.' Speaking at a panel at the Banff World Media Festival in June, Lorre teased that the new show would be quite the departure from 'The Big Bang Theory' in terms of its look onscreen. 'There's a lot of CGI,' Lorre revealed. 'There's a lot of special technical stuff that — you know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I'm completely out of my element, which is what I wanted. Which is what I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.' Everything to know about ‘The Paper' as premiere date is set: Stars, fun cameos, and inside scoop on ‘The Office' spin-off

The Office is opening a new location. Sort of. Peacock has announced a Sept. 4 premiere date for The Paper, a new series from The Office creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman that will serve as something of a sequel to the classic Emmy-winning NBC sitcom. More from Gold Derby 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe': Everything to know about the 'Big Bang Theory' spin-off Everything to know about 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood' as first trailer arrives The show marks a return to the mockumentary format that made The Office, starring Steve Carell, an Emmy-winning staple, and cleverly ties into The Office universe without rehashing old ground. As Peacock previously revealed during NBC's Upfront presentation, the series follows the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch as they uncover a new subject: a historic Midwestern newspaper and the determined publisher trying to revive it. That publisher is played by Domhnall Gleeson, leading an ensemble that includes Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and Oscar Nuñez, who reprises his role as Oscar Martinez — now working in Toledo, Ohio. While most of the cast are new characters, Nuñez's return marks a direct line back to the world of The Office. While The Paper brings a new location, new characters, and new workplace dynamics, it sticks to the signature DNA that made The Office so beloved. Set in Toledo, Ohio, the fictional newsroom — called The Truth Teller — becomes a battleground for saving local journalism. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels teased more about what to expect: 'It's about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that's much reduced from its glory days. A lot of the story lines are about how this guy, Domhnall Gleeson's character, is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn't have the budget for hiring reporters, and he has to use all the staff that work there on a volunteer basis to be reporters. They're completely untrained and don't know what they're doing,' Daniels explained. Expect to see several Office alums pop up, beginning with Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer. The duo, who cohosted the Office Ladies rewatch podcast, will be making a special cameo on The Paper. 'We were invited by Greg,' Kinsey revealed during an April appearance on the Today show. 'We showed up on set, and not only was Oscar there, but so many of our former crew members, too. The crew really was like our extended family, and we've stayed close over the years.' 'It was so special to be back with everyone — and to step in front of the camera again,' she added. Other guest stars include Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim, Mo Welch, Nate Jackson, Nancy Lenehan, and Duane Shepard Sr. The Office, which aired from 2005 to 2013, earned 42 Emmy nominations and five wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Daniels added that The Paper is, 'a fruitful premise. There's a tremendous history for local papers. The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody's news for free, and all the ad revenue going to Google.' The Paper will debut with four episodes on Sept. 4 exclusively on Peacock, and then roll out two new episodes every Thursday through Sept. 25. ‘Big Bang Theory' Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' a Go at HBO Max

In keeping with the scientific concept that is its namesake, the universe of The Big Bang Theory keeps expanding. HBO Max has formally greenlit Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a comedy that will center on comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), who had a heavily recurring role on the original CBS series. The show comes from Big Bang Theory co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and Zak Penn (Free Guy, Beacon 23) — and unlike the original series and its other spinoffs, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, it will feature a heavy dose of sci-fi alongside its comedy. Max's HBO Rebrand Is Live

HBO Max is back. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday that Warner Bros. Discovery would officially rebrand its Max streaming service to HBO Max on Wednesday, per a source familiar with the matter — and that change over is now live. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Big Bang Theory' Spinoff 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' a Go at HBO Max HBO Max and Max Say "Twitter Won't Let" Them Swap X Names Back Oscars: Mariska Hargitay's Jayne Mansfield Doc 'My Mom Jayne' Has Qualified, Campaign to Come (Exclusive) The name change, first announced onstage at WBD's upfront presentation back in May, will see Max rebrand to HBO Max, the name it used from 2020 until 2023. 'I know you're all shocked, but the good news is I have a drawer full of stationery from the last time around,' HBO chief Casey Bloys quipped onstage at the upfront. The pivot comes after WBD decided to change its streaming strategy and lean into the premium nature of HBO's offering, pulling back in some areas like unscripted and kids and family programming, rather than compete on scale with the likes of Netflix. 'This evolution has been influenced by changing consumer needs, and the fact that no consumer today is saying they want more content, but most consumers are saying they want better content,' the company said in a statement in connection with the name change. 'With other services filling the more basic needs with volume, WBD has clearly distinguished itself through its quality and distinct stories, and no brand has done that better and more consistently over 50-plus years than HBO.' The HBO Max logo, which includes a simpler black and white color scheme, will replace Max within the existing app for users Wednesday. Unlike the transition from HBO Max to Max, no new downloading of apps or account changes will be required. (The brands are having trouble, however, getting X to change their names back on the platform.) The name change comes during a somewhat slow month for the service, which debuted the Warner Bros. film Sinners earlier this month. Billy Joel: And So It Goes will debut July 18, and it will have content related to Shark Week later this month. But it also comes ahead of the open for Emmy voting, which begins in a couple of weeks. As usual, the service is expected to have a number of shows securing nominations, like the latest season of The White Lotus. The change comes as WBD is set to undergo larger changes, with the company to be split in two next year. HBO Max will be part of a new company led by David Zaslav alongside the Warner Bros. film and TV studios, with the linear TV networks spun into a new company to be led by Gunnar Weidenfels. The company is also taking HBO Max globally, launching the brand in 12 new markets this month. Alex Sherman first reported the date of the rebranding. This story originally posted July 8, at 2:48 p.m. and was updated Wednesday morning with the rebrand going live. HBO Max just confirmed a new 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff — and it's nothing like 'Young Sheldon'

We just got a major update about the next "The Big Bang Theory" spinoff, which is coming to HBO Max. "Big Bang Theory" co-creator Chuck Lorre was reported to be developing a new spinoff (aside from "Young Sheldon") for the recently-renamed streamer back in 2023 (per Variety). Thanks to a press release from HBO Max, we now know that the new series, "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," has received a series order. "We're excited to be continuing the legacy of 'The Big Bang Theory,'" said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content. "Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn't be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team." While there's not a ton of info on the show at present, here's a quick rundown of what we know about the new spinoff right now. One thing's for sure: It sounds like it's going to be a very different kind of show. Alongside the announcement, HBO Max has shared a logline for the series, and it sounds like it'll be a weirder show than you might expect. It reads: "Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from 'The Big Bang Theory.' As the title implies, things don't go well." Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Kevin Sussman is reprising the role of Stuart Bloom, alongside fellow "Big Bang Theory" alums Lauren Lupkus (as Denise), John Ross Bowie (as Barry Kripke) and Brian Posehn (as Bert). That's it for the confirmed cast at present, but seeing as that logline namedrops Leonard and Sheldon and talks about "alternative-universe versions" of the gang, is sure seems likely that we might see other faces from across the show's 12 seasons cropping up, too. Fellow exec producer Bill Prady pitches the show as "a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those ["Big Bang Theory"] characters love" and further promises that he's "certain that joy will come through the screen." If you're looking forward to streaming "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," we don't have a release date just yet, and with the series order just coming in, we might be waiting a little while yet.
