Jonnu Smith: I had aspirations of ending my career with Miami, it didn't work out
Smith's season went so well that he had a desire to be with the club for the rest of his time in the NFL.
But when he and the club could not reach an agreement on a new deal, Miami instead traded him to Pittsburgh earlier this week.
In an appearance on former teammate Terron Armstead's podcast, Smith noted that the way everything's gone down since the end of the season has been somewhat of a surprise.
'I didn't foresee this happening with how the season went for me individually,' Smith said, via David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. 'I had aspirations of ending my career in Miami, with it being home for me, my children, my family. But I understand the business side of it, and it didn't work out. I'm grateful. I've got no ill feelings toward Miami and nobody in the organization.'
Smith, 29, had signed a two-year, $8.4 million deal with the Dolphins in the 2024 offseason. But he had outplayed that base salary in his first season with the club, with his representation and Miami starting talks on a potential new deal right after the year ended.
'We started this conversation in January with Miami and, obviously, giving me the run-around, 'We'll [get] back to it,' ' Smith said. 'Obviously, they had some things they had to address, and I understand that. I was patient with them throughout the whole entire process, and eventually it came to a point in time where they told me that they just can't do it and they weren't economically in a position to pay me like a Pro Bowl tight end.'
So, the Dolphins traded him and Jalen Ramsey to the Steelers, where he'll reunite with his former offensive coordinator with Tennessee and head coach with Atlanta, Arthur Smith.
'I'm in a situation where I'm appreciated,' Smith said. 'You always want to be where you're most valued and appreciated, and that's the situation that I found myself in with Pittsburgh.'

Messi mistake leads to early Montreal goal, Inter Miami trails 1-0 in return to MLS
If there was any question about how seriously Inter Miami is taking its return to the MLS season after exiting the Club World Cup, it was answered with the starting lineup for Saturday night's road game against CF Montreal. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and five other starters from the Club World Cup Round-of-16 game against Paris Saint-Germain were in the Starting XI against Montreal. The only changes were Tomas Aviles in place of injured Noah Allen at center back and Benja Cremaschi instead of Fede Redondo in the midfield. But Messi made a rare mistake that proved costly two minutes into the game. He sent a back pass directly into the path of Montreal forward Prince Owusu, who scored an easy goal on a left-footed shot from the center of the box. Inter Miami has seven games over the next 25 days, including four of the next five on the road, so coach Javier Mascherano said he plans to do some roster rotation in the coming weeks. But on Saturday, he went with his heavy hitters. 'Clearly, we have a lot of games coming up, plus all the ones we have already played, so we will need everyone to participate,' he said. 'We'll see how we can manage some roster changes without feeling it too much because I don't like to change six or seven players from one match to the other.' Although facing CF Montreal, the last place team in the Eastern Conference, might seem like a letdown after facing European champion PSG in front of a crowd of 65,000, Mascherano and his players entered the game highly motivated to build off their tournament success. They said if they could get through matches against Al Ahly, Porto and Palmeiras undefeated, they can win domestic league games and contend for the MLS Cup. Miami beat Montreal 4-2 at home on May 28 with a pair of goals by Messi and two more by Suarez. Inter Miami has ground to make up, as it slipped from third place to seventh during its Club World Cup break and has played four fewer matches than all the teams ahead of them in the standings. Miami now sits 11 points behind first-place Philadelphia Union, 10 behind second-place Cincinnati and nine behind third-place Nashville. The top seven qualify for the playoffs, which begin in late October. The eighth and ninth place teams enter a playoff for the final spot. Due to its tournament commitments, Miami has played only 16 MLS matches, while its rivals have played 20. Messi and his teammates had not played a league match since their 5-1 win over the Columbus Crew in late May. The next stretch of the schedule is jam-packed as the team tries to catch up. Following the Montreal game, Inter Miami plays at New England on July 9, at home against Nashville on July 12, on the road at Cincinnati July 16, on the road at New York Red Bulls on July 19, and then at home against Cincinnati on July 26. 'Our motivation now is to compete in our league, and to achieve something this club has been aiming for year after year,' Mascherano said. 'We want to get as far as we can, qualify for the playoffs, be in position to have home field advantage, and from there we'll see what happens at the end of October.' Segovia added: 'We had a great tournament overall in the Club World Cup and now we shift our attention to the league. We are motivated against Montreal because we want the earn three points, and we want to be in first place in the league. We have a lot of games this month and we want to win them all. 'The level of competition in the Club World Cup was very high and we benefited from that because it let us know that if we play like we did against Porto and Palmeiras, we can win the league.' Inter Miami's Starting XI on Saturday: Oscar Ustari, Marcelo Weigandt, Tomas Aviles, Maxi Falcon, Jordi Alba, Tadeo Allende, Benja Cremaschi, Sergio Busquets, Telasco Segovia, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez. On the bench: Rocco Rios Novo, Ryan Sailor, David Martinez, Fede Redondo, Baltasar Rodriguez, Santi Morales, Fafa Picault, Leo Afonso, Allen Obando. Montreal's Starting Lineup: Jonathan Sirois, Brandan Craig, Fernando Alvarez, Luca Petrasso, Dawid Bugaj, Caden Clark, Victor Loturi, Samuel Piette, Prince Owusu, Tom Pearce, Sante Sealy.

Entire AFC North Labeled 'Losers' in Wake of Blockbuster Trades by Steelers
Entire AFC North Labeled 'Losers' in Wake of Blockbuster Trades by Steelers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the end, there can be only one winner. And some of those who have appointed themselves judges of such things think — maybe using some combination of "selective memory'' and "recency bias'' — that in the AFC North, we have ourselves a "winner'' ... Advertisement And three "losers.'' The Pittsburgh Steelers absolutely deserve to be celebrated for their aggressiveness as they shift in a "win now" mode. The team is acquiring Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins. Earlier in the offseason, Pittsburgh signed Darius Slay Jr. from the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. And of course there's the trade for DK Metcalf and the signing of Aaron Rodgers. We can take our pokes and we can make our jokes ... but pending how it all unfolds on the field, that is an impressive haul of veteran names. But does it make the rivals of Steelers general manager Omar Khan a collection of "losers?" Advertisement That is the contention of CBS Sports, which thinks the Steelers' Ramsey/Jonnu trade is so obviously the result of having made the right move that the rest of the AFC North will suffer. And so we've got ourselves an en masse "Biggest Losers'' claim. "The Pittsburgh Steelers are seemingly getting better by the day as we inch closer to training camp, which is bad news for the rest of the AFC North," CBS' Tyler Sullivan wrote in an evaluation of who are the "winners'' and the "losers'' in the deal. "Clearly, the Steelers are making these moves to seriously contend in 2025, which makes the road that much more difficult for their division rivals.'' That's actually only half-right. Advertisement The Steelers' motivation is good and clear, yes. The road toward success for the Baltimore Ravens (the favorite to win the AFC North) or Cincinnati Bengals or the Cleveland Browns is not "clearly'' more difficult. Not yet. "Pittsburgh adding Ramsey and Smith could further put a dent in the overall playoff hopes of Baltimore and Cincinnati,'' Sullivan writes, "and hurt the chances of any of them rivaling for the No. 1 seed in the conference." And in that assertion, there is accuracy ... because "could happen'' with "will clearly happen'' are two different things entirely. Ravens Rival's Moves All About Steelers Copying Baltimore, Claims Insider
Ravens Rival's Moves All About Steelers Copying Baltimore, Claims Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Like they say ... imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. The Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers have taken up residency at the top of the AFC North division for the better part of the last decade, but it's been the former who has been the ones hunted as they've enjoyed a streak of division championships. Advertisement Baltimore is the favorite to keep the streak going in 2025, but Pittsburgh is on the prowl more than ever after an aggressive flurry of offseason moves that some think is reminiscent of how Baltimore would operate. Steelers insider Alan Saunders believes the organization is trying to imitate how the Ravens do business in hopes of catching up to them in this race for supremacy. "A hundred percent the Steelers are trying to be the Ravens and are trying to defeat the Ravens with their own game," Saunders said. "Let's be honest: If the Steelers win the AFC North, if they go out and they're better than the Ravens, beat them on the field, win the division, that's what they need to do to put themselves in the best possible scenario to go win a playoff game or two." Saunders was frank about who the Steelers' biggest competitor is. His theory is that if Pittsburgh wants to be successful like Baltimore has been recently, it must build its team with them in mind. Advertisement "I don't think it's a coincidence that you give up 299 yards rushing in a playoff game and then you go use your first-round pick on a defensive tackle," Saunders said. "Oh, and by the way, another pick on a defensive tackle, and an edge rusher who specializes in stopping the run. And then you sign away Baltimore's biggest linebacker [Malik Harrison]. That happens directly because of what happened in that playoff game." The Ravens put an end to the Steelers season last year in the AFC playoffs, winning their Wild Card matchup 28-14. You can argue that the Steelers are trying to emulate the Ravens' roster structure as well, not just preparing for how the two matchup on the field. Baltimore signs former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander. A couple weeks later? Pittsburgh trades for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Advertisement The Steelers also bolstered their tight end room, adding Jonnu Smith to a group with Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. That sounds a little like the Ravens' jumbo package of Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely. The teams also now feature multi-time MVPs under center ... albeit with drastically different play styles. Baltimore is still expected to have the upper hand, but their best preparation leading up to the Pittsburgh game could come by looking in the mirror.
