
GWM's Tank 300 diesel is sure to become a favourite off-roader in SA
When GWM released the Tank 300 into the South African market in February 2024, it looked the part for the consumers in the country.
Of course, it falls into a niche category of vehicles as it is a classic off-roader but the style and luxury that GWM has opted for inside the Tank 300 also resonated with consumers.
When GWM added the diesel variant of the Tank to its line-up in the first quarter of 2025 it was welcomed with open arms.
For starters, the 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine, that delivers 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque, boasts the capacity to tow up to 3 tonnes of weight although, of course, it will still not be able to match the torque figures of the hybrid version.
Then, the range on the Tank 300 diesel is also huge. It gives you over 900km of driving on a full tank with decent fuel consumption too. GWM claims 7.7 litres/100km and while I couldn't bring the car down to that figure, I still managed below 9 litres/100km, which I thought was very good for a car this big.
The off-roading capabilities are endless with the Tank 300 diesel, with features such as 7 all-terrain driving modes, low-speed 4WD, off-road cruise control and Tank turn. In addition, when navigating steep slopes, thick mud and rocky trails, Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive Torque On Demand ensures smooth, controlled torque distribution.
The Tank 300 Turbo Diesel features a reinforced off-road chassis and chassis guard for maximum durability and stability. The chassis frame rail has a cross-section of up to 160×130mm, ensuring superior torsion resistance and driving stability when things get rough.
Another very cool feature is the 'see-through chassis' 360-degree camera that basically allows you to see underneath the vehicle.
For off-roading, it brings forward immense toughness and cutting-edge technology to give the driver an easy experience on challenging terrain.
On the road, the Tank 300 diesel is not the most refined — nor was it intended to be. It's still a rugged off-road specialist, not a crossover SUV. However, it still feels solid and capable on the road. It doesn't feel nervous or unsettled and handles extremely well.
The Tank 300 boasts a lovely interior which makes you wonder if you are in the same rugged car that you were viewing on the outside.
I guess it's a case of beauty comes from within. The super comfortable Nappa leather seats, which are heated, hug you tightly while you immerse yourself in a technological experience.
The 64-colour ambient lighting is also displayed wonderfully around the vehicle and a cool touch is that it lights up around the aircon vents to add an extra bit of ambience to the cabin.
There are two 12.3-inch screens in the vehicle. One is the infotainment system and the other is the fully digital instrument cluster.
While it all looks well put together and extremely neat, the two screens flow along one line and it feels as if the infotainment screen is stashed too far away. I found myself struggling to reach for it when I needed to adjust certain settings and it can be a distraction to the driver.
Overall, the Tank 300 diesel is a good addition to the line-up and starts at a very reasonable price of R699 900.
I can definitely see it becoming one of South Africa's off-road favourites, but at the same time, it is not for everybody.
It will suit those who love the retro look and want to explore everywhere.

South Africans continued to flock to car showrooms last month, driven by decreasing interest rates and an influx of affordably priced imported models. According to automotive body Naamsa, June's new vehicle market grew for the ninth consecutive month to 47,294 units, an increase of 18.7% compared to June 2024. Year-to-date sales for the first half of the year are 13.6% up to 278,911 vehicles. Last month the passenger car segment moved 32,570 units, a 21.7% increase over June 2024. Light commercial vehicles, bakkies and minibuses sold 12,129 units, a gain of 14.9% over the same month last year. A wave of new models and brands continued to stimulate interest in the under R400,000 price band, said Brandon Cohen, chair of the National Automobile Dealers' Association (Nada). 'Most of the growth we're seeing is centred in the sub-R400,000 segment,' Cohen said. 'The price point remains critical for volume, affordability and trade-ins, with a direct knock-on effect on pre-owned sales performance. The used vehicle market is benefiting from improved affordability metrics, driven by softened interest rates, favourable vehicle pricing and the rollout of the two-pot retirement savings reform.' The interest rate reprieve since September 2024 has lifted some burden on indebted consumers and stimulated demand for credit and consequently new vehicles, said Lebo Gaoaketse, head of marketing and communication at WesBank. 'The SA Reserve Bank has lowered rates 0.75% over the past nine months but may become more cautious with further cuts given global economic turmoil.' While lower rates have eased affordability marginally, motorists continue to face budget constraints. Despite low inflation, the average contract term continues to increase while the amount of credit reduces, he said. 'South Africans want new cars but they're spending less on them. This has been enabled to some extent by the entrance of new brands to the market at aggressive price points, but also by innovative and attractive incentives on the dealer floor.'

The Suzuki Fronx has everything you need — but choose the manual transmission
Stylish: The Suzuki Fronx does everything right, but can be slightly sluggish on the road. I recently tested the The agreement allows Toyota to gain from Suzuki's expertise in compact vehicles and rebrand those products. In turn, Suzuki gets access to Toyota's hybrid and battery electric vehicle technology. The Starlet Cross and Fronx have minor styling differences but, inside and out, they are practically the same. They share the same length, width and wheelbase. They share the same amount of boot space, the mechanicals are the same, the engines are the same and they are both even manufactured in the same facility. The most noticeable difference is the front-end styling, including the bumper, grille and lighting signature. It was like stepping back into the Starlet Cross for a week when I received the Fronx but there was one major difference — the transmission. I had the Starlet Cross in the five-speed manual transmission and the Fronx in the four-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions are paired to a 1.5 litre engine that delivers 77kW of power and 138Nm of torque. When I had the Starlet Cross, I remember dropping gears to move up inclines on the highway and maintain speed and, with the Fronx, I didn't have that option with the automatic transmission. It was more a case of how hard I pressed my foot on the accelerator to keep those speeds, but it was still sluggish, especially if you are a fast-lane type of person. There's a slightly more nervous feel to the car with the automatic transmission on the open road and the only time it might feel better is when you are stuck in traffic and you don't get a calf workout from constantly releasing the clutch. There's another reason why I prefer the manual transmission over the automatic and that is the fuel consumption. The Starlet Cross gave me a lovely 5.2 litres/100km while I managed to get the Fronx to about 6.8 litres/100km. The interior There was all you needed in a crossover in this vehicle. You will get a 7-inch or 9-inch infotainment system, depending on which variant you choose. It is clear and responsive and comes equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The screen and buttons for the aircon have been tilted towards the driver for improved ergonomics. There's a multi-functional steering wheel and all models come standard with three USB chargers, cruise control, leather tilt steering wheel and four speakers. The Suzuki Fronx GLX model also has keyless entry with push-button start, wireless charging in the centre console, a head-up display, dual vanity mirrors with illumination in the sun visors and additional lighting in the glove compartment and front footwells. The interior is very stylish, comfortable and loaded with technology that makes it easy for the driver and passengers to have fun in this vehicle. Pricing and verdict The Suzuki Fronx comes in a base GL model that retails at R297 000, a GLX manual model that comes in at R334 900 and a GLX automatic that is priced at R354 900. The GLX model, with all its bells and whistles, is well worth the money, but if you are interested in it, save the R20 000 and go for the manual variant.
