The data shows the average price of a used vehicle financed for a woman rose from R172,600 in 2014 to R297,800 in 2024. For new vehicles, the jump was steeper, from R252,000 in 2014 to R440,000 in 2024.

The auto industry in South Africa has faced an unexpectedly challenging year – US President Trump's stop-start tariff brinkmanship caused much anxiety, and with the industry reliant on both local purchasing power as well as export demand, global uncertainty strongly affects a sector responsible for 5.2% of our country's GDP (3.2% manufacturing, 2% retail). However, the industry appears to be surprisingly resilient according to the latest year-on-year data provided by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa). Issued on 1 July, the data points to surprising resilience and sustained consumer demand, with new vehicle sales up 18.7% year on year, driven primarily by passenger car demand. Read more: Why South Africa's EV ambitions are still stuck in low gear 'This success was underpinned by favourable economic fundamentals, including interest rate cuts and a still-benign inflation backdrop,' said Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa in a press release noting the results. Affordability remains key, driven by an influx of cost-effective Chinese-made vehicles with competitive after-sales deals. Regarding the export markets for South Africa's production, despite an increase in global political and trade uncertainty, the industry is still growing, but is reflecting the changes that external influences have placed on the industry. 'South Africa's automotive industry has long relied on a thriving export engine to sustain production volumes and attract investment,' Mabasa added. Top 15 vehicle brand sales: Domestic sales surge, export slip The key takeaway from the data is that domestic sales have surged (total local sales climbed to 47,294 units in June 2025), an 18.7% jump year on year from 2024. Passenger vehicles – that is, normal cars – did the heavy lifting: 32,570 units sold, up 21.7% from June 2024. Light commercials (bakkies and minibuses) rose 14.9% year on year for the month but remain slightly down (-1.7%) for the year to date. Exports paint a more complex picture: passenger car exports dipped 4.1% year on year, but light commercial exports jumped 44.5%, driven by batch shipments. Heavy truck and bus exports stayed mixed, showing the fragility of SA's export backbone. Big brands strong, new players rising Toyota stayed firmly in pole position: 11,690 local sales and 4,247 exports. VW Group's export dominance (12,159 units) again outpaced local sales (4,973). Ford pushed 3,058 units locally, with 7,382 exported. BMW shipped 6,744 units abroad despite only quarterly reporting. Chinese brands, GWM and the Chery umbrella (Chery, Omoda, Jaecoo and Jetour), which have increasingly been seen on South African roads, now cluster mid-table for local sales, reflecting consumer demand for affordable SUVs. Commercial vehicle sales hint at uneven economic recovery. Medium and heavy trucks jumped for the month (up 24.7% and 40.7% respectively), but year-to-date heavy truck and bus sales remain below 2024 levels (-3.5% YTD). The softness ties to mining decline, stalled infrastructure rollouts and port jams. With the auto industry a top industrial exporter, export softness is a flashing warning light. If global demand dips or logistics choke, local jobs and output feel it first. 'Strong consumer demand has helped the sector deliver impressive growth amid global turbulence,' said Mabasa. The electric pivot remains elusive. Correctional services cuts consultant costs, pushes to build internal capacity

Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald told the parliamentary committee that he would monitor the department's use of consultants and look 'into the amount of money we can save'. (Delwyn Verasamy/M&G) The department of correctional services is working to significantly reduce its reliance on consultants, using them 'only when necessary' to improve governance and cut irregular expenditure, it said on Tuesday. According to a presentation delivered to parliament's portfolio committee on correctional services, the department's consultant-related spending dropped to R29.2 million in the 2025-26 financial year, down from R119.3 million the previous year. Its historical over-reliance on consultants was driven by governance weaknesses, a shortage of critical skills and the complexity of managing large-scale projects, chief financial officer Lebogang Marumule told committee members. In the past, the department faced recurring issues of non-compliance with procurement prescripts, limited internal capacity and repeated findings from the auditor-general regarding irregular contract splitting. Marumule said that the clearing of irregular expenditure has been 'a very, very tedious exercise with which the department of correctional services has been struggling, with transactions going as far [back] as 2008'. The previous department of correctional services audit committee, he said, had mandated that the management of R6.7 billion in irregular expenditure should be a project undertaken by the department and consultants were sought in this regard. The department had tried to deal with the irregular expenditure itself, 'but we were not successful', he added. The department experienced a massive spike in expenditure in 2020-21 and 2021-22, when the treasury issued an instruction to it, as well as the departments of health and police, that they needed inventory management systems. Correctional services used consultants for this, said Marumule, 'who travelled the whole country'. Expenditure normalised when those contracts came to an end. In 2023-24 and 2024-25 there was another spike, when consultants were used to resolve irregular expenditure investigations and securing contracts. According to the department's annual report for the year ending March 2024, consultants were brought in primarily to support accounting, auditing, engineering and compliance functions. In that report, the department said it was working to reduce its dependence on consultants but acknowledged that internal constraints continued to limit its ability to meet operational requirements without external assistance. Tuesday's report indicated that consultants were engaged to assist in areas such as project management, oversight, translation services and occupational health and safety compliance. Despite repeated findings by the auditor general highlighting concerns around irregular contract practices, the department maintained that the use of consultants remained vital in plugging internal capacity shortfalls. The portfolio committee heard that a sharp increase in consultant spending was recorded in 2021-22, when the department spent R136 million — more than triple the previous year. That figure dropped to R19.4 million in 2022-23 as several contracts ended. But the trend reversed again in 2023-24 and 2024-25, with spending climbing to R61.8 million and R119.3 million, respectively. The department attributed this renewed spike to the advertisement of bids aimed at resolving irregular expenditure investigations and securing compliant contracts. Despite the fluctuations, the 2025-26 forecast reflects a return to cost containment, as several contracts are set to expire by July and August 2025. Highlighting the progress made in reducing its irregular expenditure from R6.7 billion to R788 million, Marumule said that consultants played a role in identifying and rectifying non-compliant financial practices, as well as supporting oversight structures such as the audit and risk committee. The department has since adopted a formal reduction strategy focusing on resource optimisation, capacity development, strategic alignment and skills enhancement. The strategy aims to ensure that external consultants are only used when necessary and that internal staff are equipped with the skills needed for long-term sustainability. Reducing dependence on external consultants by building internal capacity and expertise was now a central goal. But the department also acknowledged that challenges remained, including persistent non-compliance with prescripts, unavailability of contracts and risks of renewed irregular expenditure if internal capacity was not adequately strengthened. Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald told the parliamentary committee that he would monitor the department's use of consultants and look 'into the amount of money we can save'. The department is prioritising internal training and development, while tightening oversight over the procurement of services to ensure alignment with treasury regulations.

The Suzuki Fronx has everything you need — but choose the manual transmission

Stylish: The Suzuki Fronx does everything right, but can be slightly sluggish on the road. I recently tested the The agreement allows Toyota to gain from Suzuki's expertise in compact vehicles and rebrand those products. In turn, Suzuki gets access to Toyota's hybrid and battery electric vehicle technology. The Starlet Cross and Fronx have minor styling differences but, inside and out, they are practically the same. They share the same length, width and wheelbase. They share the same amount of boot space, the mechanicals are the same, the engines are the same and they are both even manufactured in the same facility. The most noticeable difference is the front-end styling, including the bumper, grille and lighting signature. It was like stepping back into the Starlet Cross for a week when I received the Fronx but there was one major difference — the transmission. I had the Starlet Cross in the five-speed manual transmission and the Fronx in the four-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions are paired to a 1.5 litre engine that delivers 77kW of power and 138Nm of torque. When I had the Starlet Cross, I remember dropping gears to move up inclines on the highway and maintain speed and, with the Fronx, I didn't have that option with the automatic transmission. It was more a case of how hard I pressed my foot on the accelerator to keep those speeds, but it was still sluggish, especially if you are a fast-lane type of person. There's a slightly more nervous feel to the car with the automatic transmission on the open road and the only time it might feel better is when you are stuck in traffic and you don't get a calf workout from constantly releasing the clutch. There's another reason why I prefer the manual transmission over the automatic and that is the fuel consumption. The Starlet Cross gave me a lovely 5.2 litres/100km while I managed to get the Fronx to about 6.8 litres/100km. The interior There was all you needed in a crossover in this vehicle. You will get a 7-inch or 9-inch infotainment system, depending on which variant you choose. It is clear and responsive and comes equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The screen and buttons for the aircon have been tilted towards the driver for improved ergonomics. There's a multi-functional steering wheel and all models come standard with three USB chargers, cruise control, leather tilt steering wheel and four speakers. The Suzuki Fronx GLX model also has keyless entry with push-button start, wireless charging in the centre console, a head-up display, dual vanity mirrors with illumination in the sun visors and additional lighting in the glove compartment and front footwells. The interior is very stylish, comfortable and loaded with technology that makes it easy for the driver and passengers to have fun in this vehicle. Pricing and verdict The Suzuki Fronx comes in a base GL model that retails at R297 000, a GLX manual model that comes in at R334 900 and a GLX automatic that is priced at R354 900. The GLX model, with all its bells and whistles, is well worth the money, but if you are interested in it, save the R20 000 and go for the manual variant.
