Humor: Local dad 'very sorry' for repeatedly crashing giant car-shaped grocery cart into shoppers

Frank Oberlin, father of two, was arrested yesterday and will face charges for what the police are describing as 'repeated and malicious attacks on elderly shoppers with a giant car-shaped grocery cart' at the local Pick-and-Save Market. Witnesses described a chaotic scene. 'It all happened so fast. Wait, no, that's not right at all. It all happened so slowly,' shopper and eyewitness Patricia Fox said. 'I saw an older lady with a walker inching her way down the bread aisle when suddenly one of those giant carts about the size of a football field rounded the corner and kind of bumped into her. I say kind of because it was barely moving. There was a harried looking man trying to push it, but it just kept creeping from one side of the aisle to the other because the wheels would never point in the same direction.' Other witnesses reported similar incidents — all involving elderly shoppers being mangled by a gigantic shopping cart piled high with boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch with two excited toddlers manning the fake steering wheels. Police allege that Mr. Oberlin was operating the vehicle that left a trail of destruction and carnage in its wake. When reached for comment, Mr. Oberlin's attorney strongly denied the charges and said Mr. Oberlin was 'very sorry' for repeatedly crashing the giant car-shaped grocery cart into elderly shoppers. 'My client is innocent,' Mr. Oberlin's attorney said. 'What you have to understand is that Mr. Oberlin didn't even want to use that monstrosity of a cart, but he had no choice. His toddlers made him. It was either give in or have them melt to the floor crying like miniature Wicked Witches of the West. Mr. Oberlin did the best he could, but have you ever tried driving one of those car carts in a crowded grocery store? It's impossible! Add in elderly shoppers on a weekday morning and it's a recipe for disaster.' Mr. Oberlin has been released on bail with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for next month. In the meantime, the judge ordered Mr. Oberlin to use only standard shopping carts and not shop with his toddlers. Upon exiting the courthouse, Mr. Oberlin made a brief statement to the media. 'Huh. No more car carts and no shopping with the kids? Judge's orders? It's almost like I planned this,' he said with a wink. Solve the daily Crossword

Additional victims sought of Long Beach high school coach arrested for sexual assault

Investigators are seeking additional victims of a high school coach and substitute staff member at a Long Beach high school who was arrested for sexually assaulting a teenage girl last week. Gabriel Vigil, 34, was arrested a little before 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at his residence near Pacific Avenue and the Pacific Coast Highway, according to the Long Beach Police Department. They say that Vigil was under investigation since July 1, when a staff member at Cabrillo High School reported suspicion that a teenager was sexually assaulted off campus by a substitute staffer who was also working as a coach. Vigil was booked on one count of statutory rape, one count of arranging to meet with a minor for lewd purposes and one count of contacting a minor to commit a felony, police said. His bail was set at $100,000. Due to the nature of the crime, detectives believe that there may be additional victims. They ask anyone who may know more to contact them at (562) 570-7321.

Walmart Mass Stabbing Reports Emerge in Traverse City, Michigan

There are reports of a mass stabbing attack at a Walmart store in Traverse County, MI. They emerged on July 26. The Michigan State Police confirmed on X that the stabbing had occurred. "Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office is investigating a multiple stabbing incident at the Wal-Mart in Traverse City. The suspect is in custody, details are limited at this time," they wrote. Police asked people to avoid the area and said additional details will be forthcoming. They did not release the exact number of people stabbed or their conditions. Officials at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City said in a Facebook statement that they are treating 11 victims. "Munson Healthcare is aware of the tragic incident that occurred earlier today at the Walmart in Traverse City. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action," they wrote. "We can confirm that 11 victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center. As a result, our Emergency Department is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients," they added. "We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the best possible care for those impacted. We ask for the public's patience and understanding as we manage this increased demand." "said they had received 11 victims from the incident." Their conditions were not clear. The New York Times quoted a witness Julia Martell, who said she "heard screaming and saw a man with a knife running through the store's pharmacy area." As he "moved through the store, he was shoving and stabbing people," she said to the Times. Martell told the Times there was "blood everywhere." According to KCRG-TV, "multiple people have been stabbed at a Walmart in Michigan and a suspect is in custody." That's according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the stabbings, which occurred in Traverse City, per KCRG. The motive is not clear. The condition of the victims and whether any people are dead is also unclear. The name of the suspect is not yet clear, either, as this is an unfolding situation. Videos on X showed ambulances at the scene of the Walmart. A Walmart spokesperson told Newsday that the company was 'working with police and defer questions to them right now.' Daily Mail reported that "shoppers fled for their lives after a suspect brandished a knife" inside the Walmart, citing witnesses. One person claimed the attack "occurred near the pharmacy counter with many of the victims said to be elderly," Daily Mail reported, but this was not confirmed by authorities, who have provided few details. The mass stabbing reports come after an employee at a Walmart was accused in a separate incident of stabbing a co-worker behind the deli because he believed she disrespected him. The victim survived but required "multiple surgeries," according to Mass Stabbing Reports Emerge in Traverse City, Michigan first appeared on Men's Journal on Jul 26, 2025
