India developing three types of small modular reactors: Jitendra Singh
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Singh said the three types of SMRs -- 200 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR), 55 MWe SMR and 5 MWth High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor -- for the production of hydrogen are being designed and developed indigenously.
"In-principle approval has been obtained for the construction of these demonstration reactors. These demonstration reactors are likely to be constructed in 60 to 72 months after receipt of administrative sanction of projects," he said.
The minister said the lead units of BSMR and SMR are planned to be installed at Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) sites in collaboration with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
"An estimate prepared based on the experience of setting up of 220 MWe plants indicates that the overall cost for the lead unit of 200 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200) will be about Rs 5,750 crore," said Singh, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office that oversees the DAE.
A 5 MWth high temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (GCR) is also planned to be used exclusively for hydrogen production by coupling with a suitable thermochemical hydrogen production process, he said.
The potential thermo-chemical technologies for hydrogen production, such as Copper-Chloride (Cu-Cl) and Iodine-Sulphur (I-S) cycles, have already been developed and demonstrated by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Singh said.
Necessary technology for the deployment of these reactors is available in the country and the majority of equipment is within the manufacturing capability of the Indian industry with technological handholding by the DAE, he said.
"These plants are designed & developed considering deployment as captive power plants, repurposing of retiring fossil fuel-based plants and hydrogen production to support the transport sector with the prime objective of decarbonisation," Singh said.
Presently, the installed nuclear power capacity in the country comprises 25 reactors with a total capacity of 8,880 MW, including RAPS-1 (100 MW), which is under long-term shutdown.
Two units of 700 MWe each Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) 3 and 4 and one 700 MWe unit at Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP-7) have already commenced commercial operation.
At present, 18 reactors with a total capacity of 13,600 MW, including 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor implemented by BHAVINI, are at various stages of implementation.
On the progressive completion of these units, the installed nuclear power capacity will reach 22,480 MW, Singh said.

'It was the time when India made it clear that no evil intention will be allowed inside its borders, no harm will be allowed to the unity and integrity of India,' he said, referring to victory in Kargil. 'Continuing this tradition, during Operation Sindoor too, Indian military with the same indomitable courage and firm resolve targeted Pakistan backed terrorist infrastructure and thwarted other aggressive actions of Pakistan with effective pretense and achieved a decisive victory,' he said. 'Operation Sindoor is our resolve, message and answer,' he said. The Army Chief further added: 'With the unwavering trust of the countrymen and the political freedom granted by the government, the Indian armed forces gave a determined, precise and decisive response.' In his message, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan said the Kargil conflict remains a stark reminder of Pakistan's 'treachery' and that India's adversaries will continue to test its resolve. Demand to extend Kundannoor-Angamaly bypass to Kodungallur
Kochi: Aiming to decongest the key road stretch connecting Kodungallur and Angamaly, a fresh demand is being raised to extend the ongoing Kundannoor-Angamaly Bypass Road project on national highway (NH) 544 up to Kodungallur. The MP said that the minister promised a proper step on the demand. NHAI has begun land acquisition procedures for the bypass road of NH 544, from Kundannoor to Angamaly, and the processes are in the final stage. "Linking the proposed Kundannoor-Angamaly highway with Angamaly-Kodungallur Road by constructing a six-lane highway towards Kodungallur from Angamaly town will help reduce traffic congestion in Kochi city and its surrounding areas. If the six-lane highway is constructed, it will enable travellers from northern part of Kerala to reach Kochi airport and cargo vehicles to reach Vallarpadam container terminal without any hindrance and in a timely manner. Additionally, the project will contribute to commercial progress of these regions," said Behanan. The MP has demanded the Union minister to include the project, which costs around Rs 2,500 crore, in the Bharatmala project or the national highways development project. During his meeting with Gadkari, Behanan pointed out that NHAI authorities are turning a blind eye to the public demand for construction of flyovers or underpasses at Perambra, Muringoor, Chirangara and Koratti areas on NH 544 stretching from Angamaly to Thrissur. "As national highway authorities are not ready to consider the proposal yet, the stretch of highway is experiencing severe traffic congestion. The minister assured that a permanent solution will be provided for this issue," said the MP.

Solve traders' issues on priority basis: DM
Kanpur: District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Saturday instructed the officials to ensure solution of trade related problems on priority basis. Singh was chairing a Vyapar Bandhu meeting with traders. The traders informed that during rainy days, many areas including Lajpat Nagar, Ranjit Nagar, Gumti Number Five, Kaushalpuri, Sant Nagar kabadi market, JK Mandir Marg, Sarvodaya Nagar and Guru Nanak School Marg face waterlogging and traffic jams, due to which traffic remains affected for hours. The DM asked the municipal xorporation to take concrete action on this. On the problem of drainage of rain water in Transport Nagar located in Babupurwa, he directed to prepare DPR and ordered necessary action. The traders also raised the issue of begging at major intersections in the city, which poses a risk of accidents when traffic signals are off. Reacting over it, Singh stated that this was a serious social challenge, which would be resolved in a phased manner under the Smile scheme of the Central Govt and efforts would be made towards rehabilitation.
