Ahmedabad civil hospital performs last rites of Air India plane crash victims' body parts

The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has performed the last rites of body parts of 19 persons who were killed in the June 12 Air India plane crash in the Gujarat city, officials said on Tuesday. In a release, the state government-run hospital said the death toll in the horrific crash continues to be 260, and these body parts belong to the victims, but were found from the disaster site after mortal remains were handed over to families of the deceased.
Authorities had announced that the mortal remains of the last victim had been handed over to kin on June 27.
At the time of handing over the mortal remains, the hospital had told families of the possibility of recovery of more body parts later from the crash site given the horrific nature of the air disaster.
During the ongoing investigation into the crash as well as shifting of debris from the site, more body parts were discovered and sent for DNA analysis for identification, said the release.
A series of DNA tests confirmed that these body parts belonged to 26 victims whose mortal remains were already handed over to their kin.
"While seven families collected the second set of remains last week, 19 families gave the Civil Hospital permission to perform last rites. Thus, last rites of 18 Hindu victims were performed at a crematorium, while the remains of a Muslim victim were buried at a graveyard," said the release.
Ashes of the Hindu victims were then immersed at Naran Ghat of the Sabarmati river in the city.
A London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in Meghaninagar moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 on board and several others on the ground. One passenger miraculously survived.

10.8 lakh Gujarat girls took benefit of Namo Lakshmi Yojana; school enrolment ratio up 16 pc

Under the scheme, the government provides Rs 50,000 over a period of four years to girls who would complete Classes 9 to 12. This scheme is applicable to girls whose family income is less than Rs 6 lakh per annum, said an official release. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the scheme in 2024 with an aim to enrol more girls in Classes 9 to 12, reduce the dropout ratio, help them in their education and thereby empower these female students. Ahmedabad, Jul 9 (PTI) The Gujarat government on Wednesday said the enrolment ratio of girl students has seen a sharp rise of 16 per cent because of the 'Namo Lakshmi Yojana' which was launched last year to promote education among girls from economically weaker sections. A senior official of the state Education Department said the scheme has achieved the goals as envisioned by Patel. During the last one year, Rs 924 crore in financial assistance has been distributed to 10.83 lakh eligible female students from Classes 9 to 12 under the Namo Lakshmi Yojana, said Principal Secretary, Education Department, Mukesh Kumar. 'This scheme was launched with an aim to encourage education among girls studying in secondary and higher secondary schools. Under the guidance of our CM Bhupendra Patel, this scheme has met with huge success,' he noted. 'During the last one year, we have disbursed Rs 924 crore in assistance to nearly 10.83 lakh female students. Moreover, the enrolment ratio of girls in these standards have increased by 16 per cent, which proves that the scheme is successful in meeting its objectives,' said the bureaucrat. Akshara Diwan, a Class 11 student from Mehsana district, said the financial assistance provided by the government helped her in purchasing textbooks and other study materials. 'I want to study further because I want to become a police officer. I am using the fund received under the scheme for purchasing textbooks, stationery and other study materials,' said Diwan. Shailesh Prajapati, a beneficiary parent from Mehsana who works as a potter, thanked CM Patel for introducing this scheme. 'Financial crunch is the main issue poor people like me face everyday. Thanks to this scheme launched by our CM Bhupendra Patel, my daughter can study further and finish her school without worrying about money. Her education will not be affected due to my financial condition,' said Prajapati. PTI PJT RSY This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

Preliminary report on Air India crash likely to be released this week

The preliminary report on the June 12 crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft in Ahmedabad is likely to be made public this week, according to sources in the know. The preliminary probe report is expected to be released by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is leading the investigation. While there were a few reports on Tuesday that a preliminary report had been submitted to the government, sources indicated that no such report was submitted. AAIB officials also provided this information to Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture on Wednesday, giving it an update on the ongoing investigation into the tragic plane crash that led to 241 of the 242 people on board perishing, along with some on the ground, it is learnt. According to the government, the data from the doomed aircraft's black boxes has been downloaded and is being analysed as part of the ongoing investigation. The aircraft, operating flight AI 171 to London Gatwick airport, crashed moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport. While there are no tell-tale signs of what might have gone wrong with the aircraft, videos show that the plane could not maintain lift a few seconds after take-off, and was unable to climb beyond around 625 feet in altitude. It is not clear how much light the preliminary report would shed on the causes of the accident. According to sources, it is expected to provide the sequence of events before the accident, a detailed description of the accident, and the steps so far in the investigation, along with any notable findings that may have come to light this far. But a more detailed identification and analysis of the most probable causes is expected over the coming months. Aircraft accident investigations can be extremely complex and time-consuming processes, taking months and in some cases even years to conclude. Aircraft accidents can result from a combination of multiple causes. According to guidelines from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), investigators should release a preliminary report within 30 days of an air accident. However, Indian aviation experts pointed out that the country's aircraft accident investigation rules have no such mandate and India is not bound to stick to the 30-day timeline for the preliminary report. However, given the global spotlight on this crash—the worst involving an Indian airline in at least four decades and the first fatal accident of the Boeing 787 aircraft globally—there is high likelihood of a preliminary report being released within the 30-day period. The final report should ideally be released within a year of the accident, and AAIB tries to adhere to that timeline. The analysis of data from the black boxes of the ill-fated aircraft is being done at the AAIB's new state-of-the-art laboratory in Delhi. The black boxes are critical in aircraft accident investigations as they provide data on scores on parameters and aircraft systems, helping the investigators identify the most likely causes of an accident. The AAIB-led investigation is being assisted by representatives from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), plane maker Boeing, and engine manufacturer GE. An ICAO expert has also been given observer status in the investigation. According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), following the June 12 crash, the AAIB promptly initiated an investigation and constituted a multi-disciplinary team. This team, constituted as per international protocol, is led by AAIB Director-General GVG Yugandhar, and includes an aviation medicine specialist, an air traffic control officer, and representatives from the NTSB. The NTSB is assisting the AAIB in the probe as the aircraft was designed and manufactured in the US by an American company—Boeing.
