Telangana alerts central agencies on hawala trail fuelling drug cartels

Time of India13-06-2025

Hyderabad: Stepping up its war on narco-financing, the Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) has written to multiple central agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate, Serious Fraud Investigation Office, and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, seeking action against a Goa-based hawala operator accused of channelling drug money to Nigeria.
According to officials, the hawala operator, Uttam Singh, played a key role in laundering proceeds of the drug trade, allegedly charging a 2% commission for each transaction. "In just two days, he reportedly collected ₹50 lakh from various drug peddlers in Goa. Imagine the volume of money laundered over a year," a TGANB official told TOI.
Singh would hand over cash to his associates only after a unique form of verification — the recipient had to show a specific half-torn currency note on WhatsApp as authentication.
The Nigerians operating the peddling network from Goa were receiving up to 20% commission from handlers abroad. In one case, officials found that arrested suspect Emmanuel Bediako Maxwell made 150 bank transfers totalling ₹55 lakh to relatives—all proceeds from drug deals.
In a related operation, four more Nigerians were arrested from a house built on an acre of land. The property owner, unaware of their background, rented a room for ₹20,000 but later resisted police entry and even threatened to contact senior officials in Goa when the raid began.

Drugs were seized during the search.
"Breaking these hawala channels is key to disrupting the international drug pipeline," officials said. "Drugs produced in Latin America are reaching Europe and then coastal Indian cities like Mumbai. But the money moves in reverse — from Mumbai to Nigeria, and onward to global suppliers," TGANB officials said.

Bengaluru auto overcharging row: Transport Minister slams app-based 'loot', vows permit cancellations for 'daylight robbery'

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has directed the Transport Commissioner to take strict action against autorickshaws in Bengaluru, including those operating via mobile apps, for charging passengers more than the government-fixed fares. He called the practice 'daylight robbery' in a letter dated June 28. The minister said that if any autorickshaw driver is found overcharging or cancelling rides when commuters refuse to pay extra, their permit should be cancelled and a police case should be registered immediately. Citing specific examples, Reddy referred to fare data from June 18. 'Rapido Auto App charged Rs 100.89 per km, while Auto O App charged Rs 184.19 for a 4 km ride,' he said, calling this 'unforgivable'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo As per government rules, the official meter fare in Karnataka is Rs 30 for the first 1.9 km and Rs 15 for each additional kilometre. However, complaints about overcharging and ride refusals have continued to flood in, the minister added. Reddy said that although the Transport Department has taken action earlier, tougher and more effective steps are now needed. He also attached commuter-provided screenshots as evidence and asked the department to create a detailed action plan. Live Events 'It has been directed to immediately prepare an effective action plan to protect the public and take stern action against auto drivers and owners found guilty,' he said. Inputs from TOI

Employee details ordeal of manager 'shamelessly' asking for money despite repeated refusals

A Reddit post has drawn attention to a disturbing trend in the corporate workspace, where a senior manager has been persistently asking a team member for money, despite multiple refusals. The post, titled "My manager keeps asking me to lend money", has sparked widespread discussion among users, with many condemning the manager's behaviour and calling for appropriate action. Redditors reacted strongly after a user exposed their manager's repeated money requests.(Representational image/Unsplash) In the post shared by Reddit user @GlitteringBug25, the employee recounted their ordeal, explaining that they have been working in a service-based company on the same project for over four and a half years. The same manager has been supervising the project since day one. (Also read: Toxic boss demands injured employee to return to work by Friday: 'I can give you a chair') 'I joined as a fresher. He knows my salary and often says that my salary is the highest among my offshore team members including my TL. I graduated from a top-tier college, so my starting package was high,' the user wrote. The situation escalated when the manager began asking for money. 'He asked for 25k and then 15k. I straight away refused. But now he keeps asking me every month,' the user added. Just a week ago, the manager demanded ₹ 17,000. 'I told him I didn't have money even though I had it. Yesterday he called me and directly told me he is sending a QR code and that I should send him ₹ 2,000 through it. He didn't even bother asking if I was okay.' The employee expressed frustration: 'I'm getting fed up of refusing each and every time. He shamelessly keeps asking even though I had refused him just a few days back.' Check out the post here: Internet reacts The post has triggered concern and strong reactions from fellow Reddit users, many of whom advised taking the issue to the Human Resources (HR) department. One commenter sarcastically remarked, 'The only thing left in Indian corporate now is the manager asking for a bribe for giving good reviews.' Another urged, 'Stop sending and escalate to HR.' (Also read: 'Why do Indian hiring managers think they're God?': Candidate shares bitter Bengaluru job interview) Others shared tactics to discourage the behaviour. 'One day ask him for ₹ 50k claiming a serious emergency. Then see how fast he stops asking you,' one user advised. Another said, 'Lent money never comes back. Tell him your parents handle your finances, or that you're paying off loans—just avoid giving him your Form 16.' A more serious concern came from a commenter warning, 'Do not lend him money at any cost! Plus, file a complaint with HR and save all communications. This might be a trap to build a case against you.'

What caused Air India plane crash? India probes every angle, even sabotage

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is examining all possible angles, including sabotage, in the deadly crash of Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad that killed over 250 people last month, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol told NDTV in an exclusive interaction. Mohol said the AAIB is conducting a thorough investigation into the June 12 crash, which occurred seconds after the London-bound Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Only one of the 242 people on board survived. The plane crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College, killing nine people on the ground as well. 'It was an unfortunate incident. The AAIB has begun a full investigation… It is being probed from all angles, including any possible sabotage,' Mohol said, adding that CCTV footage is being reviewed and several agencies are involved in the probe. 'It will not go anywhere. We will do the entire investigation here.' The pilot had issued a 'Mayday' distress call shortly after takeoff, the Ahmedabad Air Traffic Control confirmed. Preliminary theories from aviation experts suggest a rare simultaneous engine failure may have brought down the aircraft. Live Events 'It has never happened that both engines shut down together,' Mohol said, calling the accident a "rare case". He added that investigators are analysing data from the black box — including the cockpit voice recorder — to determine whether it was an engine issue, a fuel supply problem, or something else. 'The report will come in three months,' he said. Mohol also addressed concerns about passenger safety following the crash, saying that all 33 Boeing Dreamliners in Air India's fleet have been inspected and found to be safe. 'People are no longer scared and are travelling comfortably,' he added. The minister further commented on staffing shortages, confirming that 419 technical vacancies at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will soon be addressed. On pilot welfare, he noted that aviators facing overwork or harassment by private airlines can approach the Civil Aviation Ministry directly. Meanwhile, India has accepted a proposal from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to appoint an observer in the investigation of the Air India Boeing 787 crash in Ahmedabad that killed 275 people. However, the UN aviation watchdog will not be allowed to join the probe team directly. This marks an unprecedented move by ICAO, typically reserved for conflict zones or military-related shoot-downs. The observer will provide technical inputs and ensure global best practices are followed, but will not have investigative authority. Officials say the decision is aimed at enhancing transparency and reinforcing India's adherence to international standards. The U.S. National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) is already part of the probe due to Boeing and GE's involvement, while the UK—after losing 53 nationals—has also been invited to send an observer. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has successfully extracted data from the black box in Delhi. A multidisciplinary team has been formed, but the lead investigator is yet to be officially named.
