Fifty per cent of Irish couples would have more sex if either partner lost weight
With 60 per cent of adults in Ireland now overweight, HSE figures show we have one of the highest levels of obesity in Europe One in two Irish couples would have more sex if either partner lost weight, new research reveals. A study carried out by the online weight loss clinic shows that four in ten people have lost romantic interest in their partner due to weight issues. Exactly half of all partners, 50 per cent, say weight has strained their relationship. With 60 per cent of adults in Ireland now overweight, HSE figures show we have one of the highest levels of obesity in Europe. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines overweight and obesity - a chronic and complex disease – as ''abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health''. . Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 8th This has an impact on emotional intimacy with two in five (39 per cent) of Irish adults saying weight issues have led to a lack of attraction to their partner. More than a third (36 per cent) admitted that physical intimacy, from cuddling to hand holding, is suffering as a result. Despite these figures a quarter of couples (25 per cent) have never discussed weight-related issues in their current or past relationships. Almost half, or 45 per cent, admit to feeling emotionally disconnected from their partner because of their own weight issues, or their partner's. However, for those who embarked on tackling their weight issues, more than six in ten (61 per cent) said weight loss has had a positive impact on their love life. The nationwide poll of 1,000 Irish adults was conducted by a weight loss clinic operated by medical specialists to give customers access to prescription weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro and Wegovy. Having increased in popularity in recent years, there were more than 60,000 weight loss injection related searches in Ireland in the last month. MyBMI data shows more than a third (36 per cent) of Irish people now say they would be open to this sort of support to improve romantic relationships. With Ireland's increasing rate of obesity, the trend has been welcomed by weight loss experts. 'We've conducted nationwide research delving into some lesser-known effects of the Irish obesity crisis, the impact of unhealthy weight on intimacy,' Ayesha Bashir, weight loss expert at myBMI said. 'Notably, half of couples across the country say weight has affected their relationships, while two in five identify it as having led to a lack of attraction to their partner. 'Despite this, the data does reveal a clear path to success – with more than six in ten people reporting weight loss as having had a positive impact on their relationships.' Experts say that if you are considering medication as part of your weight loss journey, you should always do your research, speak to a registered health professional and ensure you buy your medication from a trusted source. 'At myBMI, all our prescribing Doctors are Irish medical Council (IMC) registered and experts in supporting customers who struggle with weight loss and can give personalised advice to help support their journey to a healthy weight,' Bashir, added.

I was blighted by Mounjaro hair loss & bald spots until I found a 90p a day solution – now my locks are luscious again
A WOMAN facing thinning locks and patchy bald spots has revealed how she transformed her hair for less than 90p a day. Hair Gain Capsules, packed with nutrients like biotin, zinc and organic pea shoot extract, are now being recommended by hair pros to tackle the sudden shedding linked to rapid weight loss from jabs like Mounjaro. 3 A new hair supplement could be the miracle answer to Mounjaro hair loss Credit: Hair Gain 3 The miracle product works out at 92p a day Credit: Hair Gain And while the drug helps shed the pounds, it seems some users are shedding hair too. But the jab itself isn't to blame, it's the vitamin deficiencies caused by extreme calorie cutting while on the injection that can wreak havoc on your scalp. Trichologist Samantha Stewart explains: 'We're seeing patients experiencing hair loss which we conclude to be due to their extreme calorie deficit caused by the injections.' As your body drops weight fast, it can fall short of vital nutrients like zinc, iron and B vitamins which are key building blocks for strong, healthy hair. Read more on hair loss Without them, hair follicles are pushed into a resting phase too early, causing excessive shedding and slow regrowth - a condition known as Telogen Effluvium. Samantha added: 'Those who have been on crash diets often experience reflective shedding. "It's the result of the body lacking the resources to maintain hair health.' And the effects can be emotionally devastating. Hair grows, on average, half an inch a month. You cannot speed this up. Do rosemary oil and scalp massages work? Oils do not promote hair growth. In terms of rosemary oil, the current trend stems from one small study carried out on 50 men in 2015. No women were involved, and the study compared the effects of 2 per cent minoxidil to Rosemary oil. 2 per cent minoxidil doesn't do much for male pattern hair loss anyway, so the results were not very impressive. Oils do serve a purpose in conditioning hair treatments though. They help add shine and smooth the hair cuticle to lock-in moisture and improve combability. Scalp massages alone won't cure hair loss, but it can help relax you, aid in lymphatic drainage, exfoliate and help topicals penetrate. More hair loss hacks Experts say it's not just fat-loss jabs that'll cause you to lose your hair. In fact, there are many reasons your hair might be falling out and in order to fix it, hair expert Marie, says it's vital to understand the root cause of your hair loss. She said: 'There are so many reasons why someone may face hair loss. Hormonal changes, thyroid conditions, stress, they all play a part. 'Damage from styling mistakes is a big one too. Heat, tight ponytails and clips all put stress on the roots.' When it comes to hairstyles, Marie says less is more. 'It's important to be gentle,' she said. 'A low-maintenance style that limits pulling on the scalp is your best option. 'Leaving your hair down or using protective tools can make a big difference. It's always worth speaking to a hairdresser or hair loss specialist who can help you feel your best, without sacrificing your strands.' Meanwhile, a young woman has taken to social media to share how she got her hair growing back in just a few months using a bizarre ingredient. Elsewhere, Moniquem Rapier, who struggled with bald patches and hair loss, has revealed a Hair Loss 101 HAIR pro Why Does Hair Loss Happen? Hair loss can be influenced by so many factors, from genetics and hormone changes to lifestyle choices. Stress, diet, and even hair care habits can all impact hair strength. It's perfectly normal to lose some hair each day, but sometimes the body can shed more than usual, responding to things like hormonal shifts or even life stressors. Why It Happens More This Time of Year Have you ever noticed your hair seems to shed more in autumn? That's seasonal shedding! During summer, we hold onto extra hair to protect our scalp from the sun. As the weather cools, it's like our body recalibrates and lets go of those extra strands. Dry, cooler air can also make hair more brittle, making it easier to lose a little extra volume during these months. Hacks and Affordable Buys to Treat Hair loss The great news? You don't need to spend a fortune on pricey treatments to support your hair. Try daily scalp massages—they're so simple but really help boost blood flow to the follicles. Castor oil is another fantastic, budget-friendly option that's rich in nutrients to strengthen your strands. Adding a bit more protein to your diet and a biotin supplement can also work wonders for overall hair health. Products to Avoid Steer clear of products with high levels of alcohol, sulphates, and parabens - they can be drying and damage hair over time. Heat styling and chemical treatments can also cause breakage, so try to use them sparingly. Instead, look for gentle, hydrating formulas to support your scalp and keep hair healthier through the seasons.

From foundation to setting spray – the products that aren't protecting you & the SPF ‘magic number' you need to wear
THERE'S a lot you can do in 10 minutes – paint your nails, put the washing on, make an omelette… And in the same amount of time, you could permanently harm your skin through unprotected sun exposure. 4 When it comes to SPF, not all products are equal, so here's our essential guide Credit: Getty Shockingly, 40% of Brits only buy sunscreen when they go on holiday, and 14% admit to never applying SPF.* What's more, an estimated 7 million of us admit to being confused about suncare.** It's no surprise, when celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow suggest only applying sunscreen to the high points of your face, while doctors like Tim Spector suggest sun protection does more harm than good, and trad wife influencers insist we can make sunscreen at home with store-cupboard ingredients. At the same time, the number of people diagnosed with melanoma in the UK has increased by almost half in the past decade,*** while non-melanoma skin cancer incidences have increased by more than two-fifths.† Read more Hair & Beauty Plus, independent testing in the UK and Australia has controversially found some sunscreens don't quite provide the level of protection you might expect. With such muddled messaging, it's hardly surprising that we're getting it wrong – but it's time to swot up and start taking suncare seriously. So here's our expert approved guide... SPF Application 101 If you were to apply the same amount that's used in lab testing - which works out at about two finger lengths of sunscreen to the face and neck, and 6-8 teaspoons of sunscreen for the whole body every time you reapply - the average woman would go through 100ml of SPF for each day spent on a beach. Most read in Fabulous 'But the way most of us apply sunscreen means we're getting about a third of the advertised protection," explains photobiologist Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatology, who co-created the the UVA star rating system used on sunscreens in the UK. "So, if you apply an SPF30, you'll end up with a protection factor equivalent to about 10.' This makes picking a sunscreen you like the formula of – and are happy to apply more of – crucial. The Perfect SPF Formula 'Ultimately, the best is one that you'll use consistently and correctly, so personal preference plays a significant role,' says Consultant Dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto. These days, the choices are practically endless when it comes to sunscreen - which makes it even harder to decide which is right for you. 'Creams and lotions can be applied more evenly, providing better coverage, whereas oils and sprays may result in missed spots and sunburn,' Dr Ellie Rashid, consultant dermatologist and KLIRA medical director explains. Plus, because of the amount of product you need to apply to reach the advertised coverage - products like foundation, setting spray and primer won't give you nearly what you might expect. If you were applying enough foundation to get the SPF protection advertised on the bottle, you'd be going through a 30ml bottle every three and a half weeks, which would get expensive very quickly. Hybrid formulas are also often less stable, because of the added ingredients, meaning the sun protection filters degrade faster than those in a dedicated sunscreen. 'Powders also aren't very effective at all, because you can't get a thick enough layer on the skin,' adds Professor Diffey - ruling out SPF boosted setting powders and dry shampoo as your only line of defence. That doesn't mean they're completely useless. Hybrid formulas can be helpful for topping up your protection throughout the day once you've already applied a sunscreen. They're especially good on top of make-up, but be sure to apply more than you think, and re-apply frequently, as you won't be getting the protection factor advertised. The Magic SPF Protection Number With sunscreens ranging from factor 2 to factor 100 lining the shelves - picking the right number might seem as hard as finding the right formula, but there's a much more straightforward answer. "For general daily use year-round, an SPF of 30 is recommended for most people as it blocks about 97% of UVB rays. "If you have fair skin, are prone to burning or have a family history of skin cancer, you should opt for SPF50," explains Dr Mahto. "The same goes when spending time outdoors, at the beach or during sports." No sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays, so combine it with other protection, such as wearing hats, sunglasses and seeking shade,' she adds. So, there's no arguing, if you're going on a summer holiday, you should be taking the factor 50 with you. More SPF, More Protection? Another important thing to note, is that you can't layer SPFs to increase the protection value - for example, using a factor 15 foundation over an SPF50 sunscreen doesn't give you factor 65. However, layering products will help ensure any gaps missed in the initial application are covered, and get you closer to the highest factor product all over. It's one of Professor Diffey's top tips. "Apply sunscreen half an hour before going outside, then reapply it as soon as you get out," he says. "That way, you're doubling the thickness of the layer of sunscreen and are more likely to cover up bits that you might have missed the first time.' Because your first layer has absorbed before you apply the second, the overall coverage won't feel heavy or hard to rub in. When you need to reapply depends on the sunscreen, so check the bottle. But the general rule is, reapply after swimming, towelling or at least every two hours. It truly feels like a lightweight moisturiser, even the packaging looks more like skincare than an SPF. As well as the high UVA and UVB protection, it contains antioxidants to help reduce existing hyperpigmentation and brighten skin. 4 This is a brilliant, affordable non-greasy SPF Credit: Bondi Sands Bondi Sands Everyday Non Tinted Face Fluid SPF50+, £7.99 This budget as been my go-to affordable recommendation for years, and it still gets rave reviews - you'd be hard pressed to find a more sophisticated formula for under £10. The packaging makes it great for travel, and the sun-cream scent immediately puts me in holiday mode. 4 For breakout prone skin, this SPF doesn't block pores Credit: Bioderma Bioderma XDefense Ultra Fluid SPF50+ Invisible, £19 This formula is extremely thin, so it doesn't feel cloying or oily on skin, and it absorbs in a matter of seconds so it's great for wearing under make-up as you don't have to wait for it to dry down. Best of all, it's non-comodogenic so won't cause spots, which is a godsend as I just have to glance at the wrong product and I'll break out. MOST COMMON SPF MISTAKES No matter how sun safe you are, there's always room for improvement. These are the most common mistakes you might be making, according to Dr Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist at Self London Not using enough - many people use too little sunscreen. An adult needs about one ounce (a shot glass full) to cover the entire body adequately. Missed areas - areas like the ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, and back of the hands are often overlooked but need protection too. Not reapplying enough - sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying, even if it's labelled as water-resistant. Waiting until you go outside - chemical sunscreen should be applied 20-30 minutes before going outdoors to allow it to absorb and provide effective protection. Expired products - sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time. Always check the expiration date and replace any old products. Only relying on sunscreen - while sunscreen is crucial, it should be part of a broader sun protection strategy that includes seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
