Say sorry, pay money: Plea against Prada for copying Kolhapuri chappal design
It further demands that the rights of the Indian artisan community be expressly recognised. The plea also seeks compensation for the artisan community for reputational and economic damage. The petition concerns the alleged unauthorised commercialisation of the "Kolhapuri Chappal" during an international fashion event, Spring Summer Men's Collection 2026, held in Milan, Italy, on 22nd June 2025. Videos from the fashion show went viral, with many pointing to the similarity between the footwear showcased and traditional Kolhapuri Chappals. The fashion company acknowledged that its new sandal designs 'are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage.'The PIL filed in the High Court seeks directions and appropriate reliefs, including an injunction and damages/compensation for the unauthorised commercialisation of a GI-tagged product. The petition claims that this commercialisation has caused significant harm to the community traditionally associated with the product, particularly in the state of Maharashtra. The petition is specifically filed against the international brand PRADA for the unauthorised display and exploitation of the well-known Indian cultural product "Kolhapuri Chappal."The plea states that the 'infringement of the design of the Kolhapuri Chappal by a luxury fashion label occurred without the knowledge or consent of the GI application holder or the authorised users.'The petitioners disclosed that they obtained information on the issue through various news articles and social media platforms. The plea cites examples of various other major fashion brands and argues that these patterns of cultural appropriation go beyond aesthetic borrowing."They constitute intellectual and economic exploitation. In an industry driven by branding and exclusivity, uncredited replication weakens the negotiating power of India's artisan groups, denies them the economic rents they rightly deserve, and tacitly endorses a system in which Western luxury brands profit off unremunerated traditional knowledge,' the petition said.advertisement'Protecting these crafts under intellectual property regimes whether through Gls, design registrations or moral-rights legislation is essential to ensure that the creative heritage remains both economically viable and culturally respected. Only by demanding transparency, attribution and fair remuneration can the fashion world move from a paradigm of extraction to one of genuine, reciprocal collaboration," it added. The plea is yet to be heard by the High Court.- Ends

TRAI explores licensing framework for foreign M2M/IoT SIMs/eSIMs in India
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper seeking stakeholder views on the use and sale of foreign telecom service providers' SIMs and eSIMs in India, specifically for integration into machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices that are meant for export. The consultation paper explores whether a new service authorisation should be introduced under the Department of Telecommunications' (DoT) policy framework to allow the sale of foreign SIMs/eSIMs in India. The paper also seeks to identify any regulatory issues that may arise—such as those involving the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Customs, or other authorities—with respect to the export of Indian telecom service providers' M2M SIMs/eSIMs, especially in scenarios involving import of such devices using Indian SIMs abroad. TRAI has invited inputs on various aspects of the proposed framework, including the terms and conditions for such a service, eligibility criteria, applicable fees, and the validity period for the use of these foreign SIMs/eSIMs in M2M and IoT applications. The response of TRAI came after certain Indian manufacturers who export IoT/M2M devices to international markets have requested that foreign SIMs be made available to them in India for integration into their products prior to export. This would enable the devices to operate on foreign networks immediately upon deployment abroad. In response, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has received multiple requests seeking provisions under its No Objection Certificate (NOC) policy to permit the sale of foreign operators' SIMs/eSIMs in India for such specific use cases.

We have a good cooperation going between the energy companies of India... We have a good representation of Indian two-wheelers in Argentina... Argentina is a major agricultural country, and we have tractors present here... There is another sector which needs to be looked at very carefully, and Argentina can make use of, and that is the Indian pharmaceutical and medical devices sector... India is called the pharmacy of the world, and the medical devices made in India are of top grade. They have found markets all over Europe, in the European Union as well as in the United States... I don't see any reason why they cannot come to the Argentine market and the people of this country benefit at a cheaper cost and good quality..."
