
On the comeback: Tata announces return to South Africa
In a surprise development, Indian auto giant, Tata, has announced its return to South Africa next month after quietly ending its passenger vehicle operations some eight years ago.
Still present via its truck and bus division, the Mumbai-based brand has provided no details of its likely models, though a hint has been provided by the official event invitation.
Its line-up currently comprising two A and B-segment hatchbacks, the Tiago, its sedan sibling, the Tigor, and the Altroz, the brand also fields two B-segment SUV, the Punch an Nexon, plus two C-segment SUVs in the shape of the Harrier and Safari.
As per the mentioned, the Safari appears set to be one products it will launch with as the original had been a quiet presence in the local market over two decades.
A radical departure though, the current second generation Safari made its official Indian debut four years ago, but benefitted from its current update look as part of a mid-life facelift two years ago.
Drawing off Tata's ownership of JLR, the Safari rides on the same D8 platform as the 'Land Rover' Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, with dimensions of 4 668 mm in overall length, a wheelbase of 2 741 mm, width of 1 922 mm and height of 1 795 mm.
Offered only with front-wheel-drive unlike the original that had a body-on-frame construction and came with the option of a part-time four-wheel-drive system, the Safari comes standard with seven-seats or as an option, six, with the second row being a pair of captain's style ventilated chairs.
Boot space, depending on the configuration, ranges from 211-litres with all seven seats up, to 1 550-litres with the outer and middle rows folded down.
Available in five trim levels; Smart, Pure, limited edition Stealth, Adventure and flagship Accomplished, the Safari makes use of the Tata's Kryotec 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine based off of Fiat's earlier Multijet design as part of a long standing licence agreement.
Developing 125kW/350Nm, the oil-burner is matched either to a six-speed manual gearbox, or a torque converter six-speed automatic.
In terms of spec, which varies from trim levels, the Safari features 16-inch steel to 19-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker sound system or an upgraded 10-speaker JBL, dual-zone climate control, ventilated and electric front seats, LED headlights, push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, rain sense wipers, a wireless smartphone charger, rear window blinds, hands-free electric tailgate and ambient lighting.
As standard, the Safari gets type-A and type-C USB ports, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a choice of two infotainment displays based on the model; a 10.25-inch and a 12.3-inch – both with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice recognition.
On the safety front, the Safari comes resplendent with the following, again differing in availability based on the trim grade;
tyre pressure monitor;
360-degree surround-view camera system;
seven airbags;
front and rear parking sensors;
Hill Descent Control;
Rollover Mitigation;
Hill Hold Assist;
Driver Attention Alert
Elsewhere, Tata also states the inclusion of 21 other advanced safety system, a drive mode selector with three settings; Eco, City and Sport, and an adaptive terrain selector, also with three settings; Normal, Wet and Rough.
Priced from Rs 1 549 900 to Rs 2 724 990, which works out to a directly converted R320 481 to R563 461 without taxes, the Safari is likely to head Tata's local line-up, however, exact details remain unknown.
At the other end of the scale, the Punch, which has been a runaway success since its debut two years ago, could open Tata's line-up, along with the Altroz that premiered in 2020.
Another option could be the coupe-styled Curvv that debuted last year as Tata's newest model in its entire product portfolio.
As indicated though, expect a clearer image to emerge next month.

In the judgment, the High Court of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal Local Division, Durban ruled that the provisional preservation order granted on February 27, 2025 against the ninth and tenth respondents (South African Revenue Service v Kajee and Others) is confirmed. TJSA said that the KwaZulu-Natal High Court has dismissed challenges to the South African Revenue Service's preservation order, allowing Sars to continue securing assets while investigating more than R96 million in suspicious financial transfers involving the Pietermaritzburg-based cigarette maker. TJSA founder Yusuf Abramjee said that this case demonstrates exactly why Sars needs robust investigative powers and why the illicit tobacco trade continues to devastate our fiscus. 'When a court finds a tobacco manufacturer has a case to answer over millions in under-declared income, it confirms what we've been saying for years – the industry is riddled with tax dodgers who are bleeding our country dry.' TJSA said that Amalgamated Tobacco – as well as local industry body the Fair-Trade Independent Tobacco Association (FITA) – is fighting Sars's legal right to install surveillance cameras in cigarette factories. Abramjee said that while legitimate manufacturers should welcome transparency measures, those opposing surveillance systems clearly have something to conceal. 'If the allegations in this case are true, then it will vindicate Sars's approach to enhance monitoring of the tobacco sector. The illicit cigarette trade now commands more than 70% of the South African cigarette market, robbing the country of approximately R30 billion in tax revenue annually. 'The Government must ensure that Sars has the resources to expand these investigations to other major players in the illicit tobacco trade.' FITA chairperson Sinenhlanhla Mnguni said that they note the recent judgment delivered by the High Court of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal Local Division, Durban, in the matter of Commissioner for South African Revenue Service v Kajee and Others (Case No. D1514/2025). 'FITA respects the judicial process and the role of the courts in upholding the rule of law. These illicit activities undermine the integrity of the market, deprive the fiscus of vital revenue, and harm legitimate businesses across the sector.' Mnguni added that they commend any actions that promote transparency, accountability, and fair competition, and stand ready to collaborate with Sars and other entities to eradicate these threats. 'Compliance in the tobacco industry must be approached holistically, taking into account the full spectrum of challenges and dynamics at play. It is concerning when enforcement appears to be selectively focused on isolated aspects, potentially overlooking broader systemic issues that contribute to non-compliance. This narrow lens risks distorting the true picture of the industry, which is far more complex.' Mnguni said that they urge all stakeholders, including Sars, to adopt a comprehensive and equitable strategy that addresses root causes such as economic disparities, regulatory gaps, and unfair trade practices affecting smaller, independent players. 'Only through such a balanced approach can we achieve sustainable compliance and a level playing field for all participants in the South African tobacco market.' Professor Corné van Walbeek, the director of the Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products, from the University of Cape, said that illicit trade in South Africa is a very serious matter. 'The illicit trade in cigarettes accounts for more than 50% of the total market. A large proportion of illicit cigarettes in South Africa are under-declared local production. The fact that Amalgamated Tobacco Manufacturing Company has been charged for tax evasion by Sars is long overdue.' Queen Elizabeth's supercharged Range Rover goes under the hammer
A 2006 Range Rover once owned by the late Queen Elizabeth II is headed to auction later this month — and it's expected to fetch up to R1.67m. Delivered to Her Majesty on April 25 2006 by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations division under Contract 41478, this L322-generation Vogue SE was finished in Tonga Green with a Sand Oxford leather interior, extended Burr Walnut trim and clear glass. It's believed to be the only supercharged L322 Range Rover ever commissioned for the royal household. Under the bonnet is a Jaguar-derived 4.2 l supercharged V8 producing 294kW and 560Nm. In addition to its royal provenance, the luxury SUV boasts a host of unique features including side steps, mud flaps, a load-space mat, rear grab handles for easier access and dog guards for the Queen's famous corgis. There's also upgraded internal wiring for communication and security equipment, dual rear window switches and a silver bonnet ornament depicting a Labrador carrying a pheasant. It has since covered just under 193,121km and is said to be in impressive condition. According to the listing, the bodywork is solid with none of the typical corrosion found on older L322s, especially around the rear arches and tailgate. It will be sold freshly serviced, with a recent paint correction detail and brand-new, period-correct Pirelli Scorpion tyres. The vehicle is accompanied by its original blue leather wallet, complete with handbooks and a comprehensive service history file, including maintenance invoices. It will be offered at Iconic Auctioneers' Silverstone Festival sale on August 23, for an estimated price of between £50,000 (R1.2m) and £70,000 (R1.7m).

Starlink rival Eutelsat beats estimates on Ukraine boost, government demand
French satellite operator Eutelsat reported better than expected annual earnings on Tuesday, driven by growing interest in its satellite internet services from government and corporate customers.
