A thrilling 2024 horror movie that produced an unexpected career turn for a famous British actor is proving a hit with Amazon Prime Video viewers.
Heretic, which starred Hugh Grant as the eccentric and creepy Mr. Reed, was released in November last year to widespread critical acclaim.
The film follows the story of two Mormon missionaries who visit Mr. Reed's home after he expresses interest in joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The two missionaries – Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) – immediately realise they're in a situation that's more than they bargained for.
While Heretic only made back $60million (£44m) at the global box office, that was still roughly six times larger than the budget it was made with – $10m (£7m).
And critics were fans too, with Heretic currently boasting a Rotten Tomatoes critic rating of 91%, a critic score of 7.3 out of 10, and an audience rating of 76%.
The film was recently added to the massive libraries of horrors on Amazon Prime Video, and viewers are already sending it soaring up the trending charts.
@Matthieson4426 celebrated the turn from Hugh Grant: 'Heretic. Hugh Grant is absolutely brilliant. Manages to make an unarmed middle aged man in a brown jumper epically scary. A great watch.'
Elsewhere, @MandoDameron was excited that 'Heretic is on Amazon Prime at last!' with a series of emojis implying they were running to watch it.
@MontyIsBlessed also couldn't get enough: 'Theologically thrilling and brilliant — I never imagined a movie and theology could bang this hard.'
@PaulDuncan67 said: 'Hugh Grant gets better every time I watch him. Heretic is totally absorbing… It takes real talent to demand your attention with minimal players.'
@Luluhit said: 'I had no idea this film was so impressive, packed with exquisite dialogue. It's like I've been in a classroom… They come back and tell you the truth right in your face.'
On Reddit, SomeGreatGoodThing joked: 'I honestly can't imagine something more horrifying than being trapped in a room with a man telling me his opinions on religion, so this movie really worked for me.'
As well as starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East, Heretic also features That 70s Show actor Topher Grace as Elder Kennedy, who makes a brief appearance in the film. More Trending
For Metro, film critic Tori Brazier described Heretic as a 'horror reinvention' and said Hugh's career is now 'less and less defined by his bumbling rom-com persona from the 90s'.
She also described it as an 'intriguing prospect with its approach to debate and engaging Mr Reed in a confined cat-and-mouse chase with two Mormon missionaries'.
Heretic was co-written and co-directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the horror film super team who were also behind the 2018 apocalypse movie A Quiet Place.
Watch Heretic on Amazon Prime Video now.

Huge Emmerdale exit as beloved character is ordered to move out
Things have been strained between Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) since Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) left the house in Emmerdale, and a violent attack is set to tip things over the edge. Paddy and Bear have butted heads since Bear left Eve playing with some dangerous sleeping pills, and Paddy saw his carelessness as a threat to Eve's life. They came to verbal blows again when Bear played the inconsiderate housemate by trying to fix his bike all over the house. While anyone on the outside looking in can see something is up with Bear, Paddy is simply growing more and more frustrated. They find common ground again and seem to be getting along, and when Paddy suffers a vicious dog attack while saving a sheep, Bear comes to his rescue and saves the day. The attack is bad; Paddy is mauled and needs surgery. Having fought off the dog, Bear gets his son to hospital and anxiously waits with Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) for news. Paddy pulls through, but instead of relief, Bear unleashes a torrent of abuse on his son and his son's character. Mandy makes him leave, but the damage is done. Bear's words wound him more than the dog's teeth, and once home and well enough, he grabs his vets' gun and heads off to Celia's farm and confronts her about her dog – which is something Bear tells him to do. But the confrontation goes about as well as Bear's post-surgery pep talk. Paddy spirals and his birthday is a non-event due to his low mood. He confronts Bear over his bad advice and the fallout is catastrophic. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? Paddy harshly berates Bear for his treatment of him and then he snaps – ordering Bear to move out for good. Their relationship is done. More Trending But with something clearly brewing with Bear, will fragile Paddy be left with the guilt of the way he's now treated his dad when whatever it is comes to light? Teasing the arrival of new character Celia, played by Jaye Griffiths, Dominic Brunt said: 'I don't think anybody's come across anyone like Celia before! She's brilliant. She's a true baddie. And in the same way that like classic baddies, like Kim Tate, for example, the way that they actually enjoy being a baddie, the reason they are a villain is because they enjoy being a villain, you know, not because they have any choice, but they enjoy it. And she's got that, you know, she really likes toying with people. View More » 'She's got nothing to lose. She's in her own space and time, and she's in charge, and you'll never get one past her.' 'Rust' crew settles lawsuit against film producers and Alec Baldwin in fatal shooting
SANTA FE, N.M. — A settlement has been reached in the civil lawsuit alleging negligence in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the Western movie 'Rust', according to court documents released Friday. The lawsuit was brought by three 'Rust' crew members seeking compensation for emotional distress from producers of 'Rust,' including Alec Baldwin as co-producer and lead actor. The civil suit accused producers of failing to follow industry safety rules — allegations they denied. Terms of the settlement were not available. Attorneys for 'Rust' producers and the plaintiffs could not immediately be reached by phone or email. Plaintiffs to the lawsuit included Ross Addiego, a front-line crew member who witnessed at close range the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins at close during a rehearsal on October 2021 on a filmset ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe. A charge of involuntary manslaughter against Baldwin was dismissed at trial last year on allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense. Separately, 'Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and completed an 18-month sentence in May. Prosecutors accused Gutierrez-Reed of unwittingly bringing live ammunition on set and failing to follow basic gun safety protocols. Baldwin was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on a movie set outside Santa Fe when the revolver went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Addiego testified at Gutierrez-Reed's trial and appeared before the grand jury that indicted Baldwin.

Disney World fan sparks fierce debate after making major complaint about the beloved theme park
Walt Disney World fans have become embroiled in a heated debate about the transportation at the beloved theme park. A new map breaking down the complimentary transportation offered throughout the massive resort has detailed all the ways that the 130 million annual riders can get from park to park. Guests at the Happiest Place on Earth can travel all the way from Magic Kingdom to Epcot on Disney's Monorail - a quick and easy train that goes back and forth between the parks as well as to some of the hotels. Or they can use the 36-boat transportation services in both parks as well as at Disney Springs. To get from Epcot to Disney's Hollywood Studios, people can hop on the Skyliner, which is a gondola lift system. However, the only mode of transportation that touches Animal Kingdom is the free Disney buses - and some fans are not happy about it. After the new map was released, one Disney fan took to Reddit to express their outrage over the lack of options to get to Animal Kingdom. And the post lead to a massive argument about the Disney bus system. 'I'm someone that prefers Skyliner or Monorail transportation so it's really unfortunate that the ONLY way to get to Animal Kingdom right now is by bus,' the user expressed. 'The yellow line [is] there for the Skyliner [and] could easily be extended all the way to Animal Kingdom if they wanted.' They suggested: 'Maybe even have a station at [the hotel] Coronado Springs and [the water park] Blizzard Beach.' 'Having no way to get to Animal Kingdom except driving or taking the bus is really inconvenient and it's weird that it's the only non-water park to only be accessible via bus,' they continued. 'I'm someone that I would visit Animal Kingdom way more if I could just hop over there on the Skyliner from Hollywood Studios. So why is there no Skyliner?' Many other people rushed to the comment section to share their thoughts, and discussed the possibility of Disney adding more transportation to the park. 'I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually get some sort of transit line out to Animal Kingdom, but it's gonna take a lot of money and desire to make it happen,' one person wrote. Another added: 'Disney likes to avoid guests seeing the backstage areas. They do a really good job at Epcot to minimize the amount you can see from the Monorail and it is only a few seconds right at the end where you can see backstage.' 'I just went on Google Earth and measured [a] straight line from the [Hollywood] Studios gate to Animal Kingdom gate [which] is a little under two miles,' shared someone else. 'But that wouldn't even be feasible because said straight line is right through the middle of the studios.' Others said they had no problem with the bus and speculated the lack of Monorail or Skyliner transportation was due to the animal enclosures. 'It's literally not that hard. You get on a bus and sit down,' a person wrote. 'You do realize it's not as close as this map makes it look right?' another said. 'Not to mention it would have to be routed to avoid all animal areas,' someone else observed. 'Can you imagine how much trash would be dropped in the animal enclosures?' a different user shared. 'A free bus that runs all day is pretty convenient. I would suspect that the ANIMALS play a big factor into the lack of overhead rails and lifts,' a different comment read. 'We're so spoiled at Disney, honestly. One of the best bus systems in the world and we (including myself sometimes) complain about it,' another user admitted. 'Yeah, 15 to 20 minutes from the Contemporary to Animal Kingdom on a mostly empty bus with the AC set to like 60F didn't exactly seem like a burden during our visit earlier this month. [The] bus is good. Take [the] bus,' a person urged. 'Maybe it's just me but the bus ride to Animal Kingdom is totally reasonable,' someone else penned.
