Centre defends UP government's school merger policy amid criticism

India.com2 days ago
The Union government has strongly defended the Uttar Pradesh government's proactive School Pairing Initiative, a strategic policy designed to revolutionize basic education by consolidating under-enrolled schools. This robust defense comes as BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla's recent tweet ignited widespread public discussion, highlighting the true intent behind the reported merger of over 26,000 schools in the state.
Contrary to misleading narratives suggesting widespread closures, government officials and policy documents emphasize that the initiative involves judiciously merging schools with fewer than 50 students into nearby, well-equipped institutions. These mergers occur within a 1 km radius for primary schools and a 3 km radius for upper primary schools, a move aimed at optimizing resource utilization, enhancing infrastructure, and ultimately improving learning outcomes for students.
Here's a quick lesson for those who gave Madhushala instead of PaathShala Black to White facts ka nahi karna chahiye While some spin half-truths for headlines, UP under CM Yogi is fixing what agenda-peddlers others ignored for decades. So here are the facts -
1) 26,000+… https://t.co/AwzMRlCNji — Shehzad Jai Hind (Modi Ka Parivar) (@Shehzad_Ind) July 22, 2025
This forward-thinking School Pairing Initiative is an integral part of the BJP government's broader commitment to addressing long-standing challenges in rural government education. It tackles critical issues such as low enrollment, inefficient teacher deployment, and underutilized facilities head-on. Merged schools are not being abandoned; instead, they are undergoing significant upgrades under flagship programs like Project Alankar, which provides for modern amenities including smart classrooms, state-of-the-art science labs, clean drinking water facilities, and sustainable solar power.
Furthermore, a visionary aspect of this policy involves repurposing vacated school buildings into vibrant Anganwadi centres and Bal Vatikas. This innovative approach directly contributes to expanding critical early childhood education infrastructure, ensuring holistic development from an early age. Importantly, the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) of ₹1,200 per student for uniforms, shoes, and stationery remains entirely unaffected, underscoring the government's unwavering commitment to student welfare.
The positive impact of this initiative is already evident in districts like Prayagraj, where reports indicate improved student attendance and a more efficient consolidation of educational resources. The policy's strength was further affirmed in July 2024 when the Allahabad High Court upheld its constitutional validity and public interest justification, decisively dismissing all challenges brought against the mergers. This judicial endorsement solidifies the government's position on the legality and benefits of the program.
Uttar Pradesh's pioneering model aligns seamlessly with successful education reforms implemented in other states under BJP or allied governments, including Rajasthan (over 17,000 school mergers), Madhya Pradesh (16,076), Odisha (over 9,000), and Jharkhand. These states have similarly undertaken school rationalization efforts to boost efficiency, optimize student-teacher ratios, and enhance the overall quality of public education.
As the discourse around education reform continues, the Uttar Pradesh experience stands as a powerful testament to the BJP government's dedication to achieving a crucial balance: expanding access to education while rigorously ensuring its quality in public schooling, thereby securing a brighter future for countless students.

Rahul looks back at where he faltered: Didn't protect OBCs because I couldn't understand their issues at the time

A day after he said that the Congress 'fell short' of understanding issues faced by the OBCs and that 'opened up the space' for the BJP, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that he didn't protect the OBC community's interests earlier in his political career as the issues faced by them are complex and not easily visible. Addressing a Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan of OBCs at the Talkatora Stadium in Delhi, Gandhi said that while he should score well on issues related to Tribals, Dalits, minorities and women, he couldn't understand the problems of OBCs and admitted that he didn't do enough for the community. He also said that he will be working 'double' on this front from now on. 'Since 2004, I have been in politics. Twenty-one years have passed. When I look back, and in a way, analyse myself – where I did the right thing and where I lacked – I see a couple of big issues. I worked on the Land Acquisition Bill, MGNREGA, Right to Food, Tribal Bill… These things I did well. I feel I should get good marks on issues of Tribals, Dalits, minorities, women… When I look back, I see one thing clearly. I lacked on one thing, made a mistake – what was it? The Congress and I made a mistake. I should have protected the OBC section; I didn't. The reason for this was that I didn't understand your issues at the time,' he said. Gandhi said that around a decade ago, he 'could see the problems faced by Dalits' – 'it was clear and I understood it'. 'Untouchability is their history,' he said. Talking of Tribals, Gandhi said, 'It is easy to understand issues of Tribals – jungle (forest), jal (water), zameen (land) are right there for you to see.' 'But the OBC issues are hidden, and not easy to see. My regret is that if I knew your history and issues, I would have got the caste census done then. And it is my mistake and not the Congress's. The good thing is that if I had got the caste census done then, it wouldn't have been as good as it will be now,' he said. Gandhi said that the Telangana caste survey is like a 'tsunami' and that its 'aftershock' will be felt soon. 'The way the tsunami came… The earthquake that led to the tsunami wasn't seen. It was under the sea… When the tsunami came, its impact was felt 2-3 hours later. The same has happened in Telangana,' he said.

BJP A.P. president P.V.N. Madhav launches ‘Saaradhyam' campaign

In the context of India's progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP Andhra Pradesh State president P.V.N. Madhav unveiled the logo of the 'Saaradhyam' campaign at the BJP State office here on Friday. Speaking to the media, Mr. Madhav announced that he would be commencing a state-wide tour, beginning with a symbolic visit to Kadapa, considered the threshold to the holiest temple of Telugu States — Tirumala. Mr. Madhav said that the 'Saaradhyam' campaign, designed to showcase how India has transformed into a global force under Mr. Modi's leadership, will reach out to the public across all regions. The campaign also aims to educate citizens about the Central government's commitment to uplift marginalized communities through Antyodaya, the vision of empowering the last person in the queue, he said. The campaign will be conducted in five phases across the State, starting from Kadapa — a district historically significant for Telugu identity and the site of the earliest legislative records. As part of this initiative, the BJP will launch programs aimed at nurturing leadership qualities among its workers and instill courage and conviction in party leaders at every level. A range of activities will be rolled out to strengthen the BJP's presence in the state and raise the party flag high, he said. He emphasized that the BJP has emerged as the largest political party in the world, and it is now time to strengthen its grassroots presence across Andhra Pradesh. As part of this effort, the party will hold extensive meetings with karyakartas (party workers) throughout the State. State president of the BJP Minority Morcha Sheikh Baji, BJP spokesperson Sadhineni Yamini Sharma, NTR District BJP president Adduri Sriram, Chairman of the 20-Point Programme Committee Lanka Dinakar, OBC Morcha State president Rongala Gopi Srinivas, Social Media in-charge Keshav Kanth were also present.
