A woman's theory as to why her cat had kittens with various different fur colors has gone viral on social media, and now internet users can't stop laughing.
In a viral TikTok video shared in April under the username @podwi3czorek, the poster picks up the kittens one by one, showing them to the camera to highlight their different fur colors. The first two kittens on screen have an intense gray fur, typical of Scottish folds, as the poster confirms in the comments.
However, as the clip goes on, the kittens' fur colors keep getting lighter and lighter. The third kitten is a light gray, dusty color, while the fourth is almost completely white, and the fifth is white as snow. "Mom's printer ran out of ink," the poster writes in the clip, as the newborn kitties make cute playful noises in the background.
It is not unusual for cats to birth kittens with different fur colors and patterns, but what is behind their unique coats?
Dr. Liza Cahn, veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, told Newsweek that a cat's fur color comes down to a complex interaction of genes.
Cahn said that, for each gene, a cat inherits one copy, called an allele, from each parent. This determines how a particular trait will be expressed. A dominant allele requires only one copy for its trait to be expressed, while a recessive allele requires two.
"In simple terms, genes control the production of two primary pigments within specialized cells called melanocytes: eumelanin (which produces black and brown colors) and pheomelanin (which produces red and orange colors)," Cahn said.
"A primary gene determines which of these two base pigments is produced, determining a cat's overall color. Other genes then act as modifiers, leading to color dilution, white patches, tabby pattern, and more."
The rainbow of colors and patterns within a litter of kittens, according to Cahn, comes from the unique combination of genes each one inherits from its parents.
Cahn said: "Additionally, a female cat can mate with more than one male during her heat cycle, so it's possible for kittens in the same litter to have different fathers, leading to even more variation in their colors and markings."

The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 29.5 million views and more than 5.9 million views on the platform.
One user, Kaname Hagiri, commented: "I have a pair of black cats, imagine my surprise when all the kittens were white as snow."
Diderareda posted: "50 shades of gray."
Samantha Dawn added: "Mine straight up malfunctioned. She had 4 black kittens and one singular orange tabby."

The Teen Mom is Dying Out

While the birth rate has declined in general over the last 50 years, mothers aged between 15 and 19 have seen the most consistently steep fall. In 1975, there were 599,926 teen births in America – more than double the teen pregnancies recorded in 2024 (136,376), according to the U.N. Population Division. Among the teen births that do take place today, "the vast majority occur among folks who are 18 or 19," said Elizabeth Wildsmith, a family demographer and sociologist at Child Trends, a nonpartisan research organization. "Teen births have declined dramatically over the past several decades," she told Newsweek, citing a lower level of sexual activity among teenagers, a higher level of contraceptive use and wider social changes. "No easy answers," said Claire Brindis, co-director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Health National Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco. "No one factor can really explain the reductions," she told Newsweek, citing similar reasons to Wildsmith, along with improved access to education. Brindis also drew on the general trend of having children later, currently taking place across all age groups. "We have to give young people a lot of credit for being pregnancy-free," she said. Teenagers Are Having Less Sex Some 32 percent of high schoolers said they had ever had sex in 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) most recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). This is a decrease from the 47 percent who said they had ever had sex a decade earlier, in 2013, and significantly lower than in 1991, when 54 percent said they had ever had sex. "I am not sure we have a clear understanding yet of the role that digital/social media is playing in shaping how and when youth form relationships, including sexual relationships, or their thoughts and behavior around parenthood," Wildsmith said. "There is likely a mix of positive and negative impacts. For example, online resources, especially reliable sources that use evidence-based information, may help youth learn about various contraceptive methods and more easily access them," she continued. "Similarly, they can provide access to content around what a safe and healthy romantic relationship looks like." "At the same time, we know that health misinformation on social media platforms is a serious concern," she added. She went on to align the decline in sexual activity with "a decline in the proportion of youth that have ever dated." Brindis also spoke about cultural shifts, pointing to the pandemic when she said: "Perhaps another factor is a residual of COVID, with more young people hanging out in groups, after long periods of isolation, and less likely to end up only in pairs." "Ironically, while more teens are exposed to pornography through social media, they are less likely to feel comfortable talking to each other and being in a relationship," she added. But she went on to speak about the impact of increased education and the choices this has provided. "Clearly, access to education has been shown to be a huge motivator," Brindis said, "as young women are surrounded by role models, including their moms, who have improved their own educational status and who hold great expectations that their daughters can break more glass ceilings than they were able to themselves." "Young women are more likely to explore how to protect themselves, including delaying having sex, having fewer partners, if they are sexually active (which reduces their risk as more steady partners will increase the likelihood of conversations about birth control protection in the context of all their other dreams," she added. Have Teen Pregnancies Changed For Everyone? While "the dramatic decline in the teen birth rate since the early 1990s has occurred across all race/ethnic and socioeconomic groups," as Wildsmith said, the declines "have been somewhat uneven across groups and there are still large disparities in the teen birth rate across race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status." For example, teen birth rates among Native (20.9), Hispanic (20.8), Pacific Islander (21.2), and Black (19.3) teens were more than double that of white teens (8.4) and over ten times higher than Asian teens (1.8) in 2023, according to a Congressional Research Service report published in April, which used data from the National Center for Health Statistics. "We should recognize that there continues to be segments who are more likely to be at risk-young people who are poor or low income, those who live in rural communities, with less education, and with less hope for economic opportunities continue to be more vulnerable," Brindis said. "The risks are that we don't continue to invest in young people across all groups, and especially women, if education opportunities are shut off, if economic options (as an alternative to going to college), if student loans are eliminated or more difficult to get, if families have more economic struggles, if access to birth control or other social support services, for example, many of these positive trends can evaporate," she added. While mothers between the ages of 50 and 54 had no babies in 1975, this number gradually increased to more than 100 over the years and was 159 in 2024. People in their twenties have had fewer babies, often delaying children to their thirties, which has meant the number of births in this age group has increased. America is one of many countries around the world struggling with falling birth rates. Fertility rates are projected to average 1.6 births per woman over the next three decades, according to the Congressional Budget Office's latest forecast released this year. This number is well below the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman required to maintain a stable population without immigration. Many trying to tackle this issue have focused on public health policies and financial plans, often citing the 2008 financial crisis, its effect on housing, inflation and pay as a major contributor to why people delay having children, have fewer of them or to not have them at all. The Donald Trump administration has made this issue one of its priorities, with the White House exploring the possibility of giving women a "baby bonus" of $5,000, according to an April New York Times report.

Debbie Lopez lost her voice to a muscle-weakening disease, but with the help of new artificial intelligence (AI) technology, she is speaking to her family again, Monroe Community Hospital (MCH) in Rochester, New York, confirmed to Newsweek. Why It Matters Lopez, who has been a patient at MCH since February, was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in 2019. ALS is a disease that affects the nerve cells in the body, causing the muscles to become weak and can lead to paralysis and loss of voice. No singular cause has been identified for most causes of ALS, with some research into factors that may be linked, such as heredity, environmental exposures, and diet, among others. About 30,000 people in the United States are living with ALS, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which notes that tracking the disease can be challenging. AI technology is rapidly transforming society, reshaping jobs, productivity and advancements across sectors, including medicine. What to Know Several years ago, Lopez, 39, started a YouTube channel, Living with Lemons, to document her health journey, raise awareness, and provide comfort to others going through a similar experience. The channel has ended up being able to give Lopez her voice back, as speech pathologist Jaime Spencer, who provides care to Lopez at MCH explained, "We were able to get her voice from using her YouTube channel," adding, "and from there they were able to clone anything that she wants to say." The AI voice, which mirrors Lopez's, can now mimic anything Lopez types, thanks to the content from her YouTube videos and the technology's ability to replicate speech. MCH shared with Newsweek a video of Lopez breaking into a smile as she hears her voice from the device, saying in what sounds just like her, "Hi, I am Debbie Lopez." "Cameras on the device track her eye movements and she can look at different parts of her monitor for either letters, words, or popular phrases or presets she has on her communications device," an MCH spokesperson told Newsweek in an email Wednesday. In the MCH video explaining Lopez's health journey and the use of the AI, Spencer said, "This new software and this new technology has been amazing because it allows patients and individuals to preserve some of the most intimate parts of them and what makes you you, is your voice." Lopez, through the AI, says in the video, "Even if I can't make a sound, I still have a voice." Lopez and her team at MCH are working on preserving her voice for her three children and family members by reading and recording some of her favorite children's books. What Happens Next Lopez remains in high spirits despite the severity of her disease, saying, "It's broken everyone who loves me and everyone I love, but it hasn't broken me," and adding, "I get to see the best in everyone." AI is increasingly being used in medical settings, from diagnostics and predictive analytics to assisted surgeries and the development of new treatments. "ALS can be pretty isolating. Patients lose function of much of their body parts. Anything that helps restore a sense of normalcy is a huge benefit," a MCH spokesperson told Newsweek.

Never-Smokers' Lung Cancer May Worsen in Areas With Air Pollution

Lung cancer appears to mutate more in patients living in areas with higher levels of fine-particulate air pollution, such as that released by vehicles and air pollution. This is the conclusion of a study from the National Institutes of Health and the University of California, San Diego, which studied tumors in nearly 900 lung cancer patients who had never smoked. Despite this, paper author and oncologist Maria Teresa Landi of the National Cancer Institute told Newsweek, those in areas of higher air pollution "had a pattern of mutations that is typical of tumors from subjects who have smoked tobacco." Previous studies into the genomics of lung cancer have tended to focus exclusively on people who smoke tobacco, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of how the disease develops. In contrast, the new work represents the largest-ever whole-genome study of lung cancer patients who have never smoked—who account for 25 percent of all lung cancer cases worldwide—and could help us identify new ways to protect against the condition. The team then cross-referenced the geographic locations of each patient with measurements of PM 2.5 air pollution—particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, or about forty times thinner than the average human hair—sorting each subject into high and low levels of air pollution. The researchers found associations between air pollution exposure and mutations in several genes that were previously linked with tobacco smoking. These included changes in the tumor-suppressing "TP53" gene. Alongside this, the team noted a relationship between air pollution exposure and the premature shortening of "telomeres", sections of DNA found at the end of chromosomes that act like the protective aglets at the end of shoelaces. Telomeres naturally shorten every time they are involved in cellular divisions and when they get too short, they become unable to replicate and die. Shorter telomeres are associated with genetic instability. "Shorter telomeres are a sign of more rapid cell division, a hallmark of cancer," Landi said. She added: "This observation suggests that air pollution may be promoting the growth of lung cancer as well as causing changes that might initiate a cancer." Unexpectedly, the analysis also revealed that although exposure to secondhand smoke was associated with a slight increase in mutation rates and shortened telomeres, it did not appear to lead to an increase in cancer-driving mutations. This, the team said, suggests that secondhand smoke may present less of a risk of causing genetic mutations than air pollution. This does not mean, however, that secondhand smoke is safe. As the researchers note: "Additional non-mutagenic carcinogenesis could be contributing to the observed rise in lung cancer in those exposed to secondhand smoke."
