Yogi lauds PM: ‘Transformed service into pledge, governance into culture & security a priority'

Indian Express10-06-2025
PRIME MINISTER Narendra Modi has given India a global identity and the last 11 years have transformed service into a pledge, governance into a culture, and security into a priority, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in Lucknow on Tuesday.
Adityanath was addressing a press conference on the 11th anniversary of the Modi-led government at the Centre.
The CM also congratulated the Prime Minister on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government and presented the Centre's report card, highlighting good governance and welfare initiatives for the poor.
The Chief Minister claimed that in the first 65 years after Independence, Congress-led and 'unstable' governments broke the people's trust and damaged India's global image. In contrast, the past 11 years under Prime Minister Modi have given the country a corruption-free, nepotism-free, and appeasement-free leadership, he said.
The CM said that before 2014, India was seen as a nation that spoke of peace, even in the face of provocation. But under PM Modi, a new doctrine — the 'New Normal' — has emerged: while India prefers peaceful development with like-minded nations, any breach of security or promotion of terrorism would be met with decisive action such as surgical strikes, air strikes and Operation Sindoor. The CM also praised the abrogation of Article 370, saying it brought Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh fully into the constitutional fold.
He said the Modi government has empowered women through various schemes. For the first time, girls were admitted to Sainik Schools and women were recruited into the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Maharashtra.
Adityanath said that before 2014, India remained the world's 11th largest economy. However, under PM Modi's leadership over the past 11 years, India has risen to become the fourth largest economy, surpassing Britain and now overtaking Japan. He added that India is the only major economy to have doubled in size within a decade and is the first country to more than double its per capita income — from Rs 79,000 in 2013–14 to around Rs 2.5 lakh today. With this momentum, India is on track to become the world's third-largest economy by 2027.
He said that under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, 81 crore people nationwide — including 15 crore in Uttar Pradesh — receive 5 kg of free food grains every month.
He added that while Congress governments built only one AIIMS, Atal Bihari Vajpayee added six, and Prime Minister Modi expanded the number to 23—including two in Uttar Pradesh (Gorakhpur and Rae Bareli). He added that till 2014, India had just 180 medical colleges; today, there are 2,045 medical colleges nationwide, with 80 in Uttar Pradesh alone. MBBS seats have increased from 51,348 to 1.18 lakh, and PG seats from 13,246 to over 74,000.
Adityanath said that the coordination of faith and economy has created a new model of development, with spiritual heritage becoming a catalyst for economic growth. He cited the example of the Maha Kumbh, where five new economic corridors emerged, boosting employment and regional economies.
The CM mentioned about Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi, Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, Vindhyavasini Dham, Naimish Dham, Shuk Tirtha, Mathura-Vrindavan, Chitrakoot — all in Uttar Pradesh.
Nationally, Yogi mentioned Mahakal Mahalok, Kedarpuri, and Badrinath Dham redeveloped with modern amenities, enhancing religious tourism.
An exhibition was also organised at the BJP State Office to mark the completion of 11 years of PM Modi's tenure. There were displays highlighting key schemes launched by the Central Government over the past 11 years and their achievements, including Operation Sindoor, appreciating its significance and timely execution.

More Nagaland bodies brace for influx of people evicted in Assam

GUWAHATI More tribe-based students' organisations in Nagaland have called for mechanisms to check the possible influx of people evicted from various categories of government land in Assam. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Assam has been carrying out an eviction drive since June, clearing government lands of some 50,000 people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims with roots in present-day Bangladesh. Several tribes of Nagaland living in areas bordering Assam have been particularly concerned about a proposed eviction drive in a forested stretch at Uriamghat in the Golaghat district. Many illegal settlers left the area adjoining Nagaland after the Assam government began conducting land survey operations a few days ago. On Wednesday (July 23, 2025), the Konyak Students' Union directed its federating units in the Mon district, especially in the Tizit and Naginimora areas bordering Assam, to deploy 100 volunteers daily at every entry point. 'The volunteers are tasked with checking all non-locals entering the Mon district to ensure they are carrying valid ILP (Inner-Line Permit) and proper documentation,' the union, catering to Konyak Naga students, said in a 'notification'. An ILP, mandated by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, is a temporary travel document an Indian citizen is required to carry while visiting the 'protected' States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland. The Konyak students' body said anyone found without valid documents must be sent back immediately from the Mon district. It appealed to the district administration to stop issuing the ILP for at least a month to allow proper scrutiny and prevent unchecked influx into the district. 'Strict compliance from all units and authorities concerned is expected in the interest of safeguarding our indigenous rights and security,' the union stated. A union of the Sümi Naga students living across the Chumoukedima and Dimapur districts raised the first alarm on July 21. Similar concerns about possible influx of 'illegal immigrants' were aired by the Lotha and Ao Naga students' bodies in the Wokha and Mokokchung districts. These districts border Assam. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government reclaimed 1.29 bighas of land from encroachers since 2021, and the eviction drive would continue. One person was killed in a firing while several others, including police and Forest Department personnel, were injured during an eviction drive in western Assam's Goalpara district a few days ago.

Leader of the masses comes home one last time

Kottayam: The final journey of V S Achuthanandan reached his birthplace, Punnapra, Alappuzha, on Wednesday — a return to the land where his political life first took root, where he organized historic struggles for working class communties and where he emerged as one of the leaders of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising. His mortal remains arrived at the Velikkakath House around 12.15 noon, more than 22 hours after leaving the state capital and well past the initially scheduled arrival time of 10pm on Tuesday. Ministers Saji Cherian and P Prasad received the funeral procession upon its arrival. Despite steady rain, thousands of mourners gathered from early morning to pay their final respects to the departed leader. Long queues formed outside the house from 6am as people from across the state waited patiently. The mortal remains were first taken inside for relatives to pay homage before being brought out for public viewing. A Suresh, former personal assistant to V S, recalled how the veteran leader made it a point to visit this house twice every year. "He never missed being here for Onam, when he had the traditional sadhya and for the Punnapra-Vayalar anniversary in Oct," Suresh said. "Once here, V S would transform into a karanavar — the family patriarch. A lot of visitors used to flock in, including neighbours, old friends and relatives. " The house, he added, is more than a family home — it stands as a symbol and memorial of the Punnapra-Vayalar struggle. V S last visited in 2019 before failing health halted his travels. Earlier in the day, the funeral procession entered Alappuzha district after 7am. Along the way, hundreds of people — men, women, and children — lined the roadsides to pay tribute. The route passed through historically significant locations, evoking memories of a glorious past tied to the departed leader. Around 7.15am, it passed by in front of the KPAC headquarters in Kayamkulam — the iconic theatre movement that staged the play Ningal Enne Communist Aakki (You Made Me a Communist), a milestone in Kerala's political history. A large crowd had gathered there, cutting across party lines, to honour the departed leader. In Harippad, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala joined the crowd paying homage. The procession continued through Ambalappuzha, where V S first contested elections, with paddy farmers and fisherfolk gathering in large numbers. It also passed the symbolic Thottappally bridge, a symbol of Kuttanad farmers' struggles that V S championed. Among those who paid their respects at the house were ministers R Bindu, K Krishnankutty, Maharashtra governor P Radhakrishnan, N K Premachandran MP, MLAs M V Govindan, H Salam, M S Arun Kumar, Mathew T Thomas, Mohammed Muhasin, P K Kunjalikutty, CPM general secretary M A Baby, senior CPM leader G Sudhakaran, Muslim League leader Panakad Sadikali Shihab Thangal, writer Benyamin, former MP MM Arif, former MLAs C K Sadasivan and K K Shaju. At 2.40pm, the body was placed in a KSRTC bus for the journey to the CPM district committee office.

BC Quota Ordinance: BJP hits out at Cong, flags legal loopholes and ‘political gimmickry'

1 2 3 Hyderabad: The Congress govt's push for 42% reservation for Backward Classes is drawing sharp criticism from the BJP, which is accusing the ruling party of bypassing due legislative process and indulging in political theatrics. While the Congress aims to elevate the BC quota issue into a nationwide campaign, BJP leaders are cautioning that the move could trigger significant legal challenges, particularly as the proposal threatens to breach the Supreme Court-mandated 50% cap on reservations. BJP state chief N Ramchander Rao has alleged that the Congress govt is intentionally avoiding a direct amendment to the Panchayat Raj Act in the current assembly session. Instead, it has chosen to route the proposal through an ordinance sent to the governor, a move Rao claims is a calculated attempt to dodge legislative scrutiny. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad Anticipating that the Congress may try to blame the Centre for any obstacles in the implementation of reservations, the BJP has sharpened its position. "We are not opposed to the 42% BC reservation," Rao clarified, "but we strongly object to the inclusion of 10% political representation for Muslims under the BC quota. Any increased reservation must benefit only the BC communities." Within party circles, leaders have been asked to question the Congress's sincerity, especially as the ruling party continues to make lofty promises without addressing the legal complexities involved. "If they try to pin this on us, we will respond firmly. We supported the bill in the assembly, despite our reservations on Muslim inclusion," BJP leaders reiterated. As the reservation debate heats up, the BJP appears poised to frame the Congress's move as symbolic and legally untenable, while reaffirming its support for genuine, constitutionally valid BC representation, sources said. The BJP is now closely tracking the Congress govt's next steps and the governor's decision on the ordinance. Party sources have raised concerns over the lack of clarity in the ordinance, pointing out that it fails to mention specific reservation percentages. "If they were truly committed to this issue, they would have amended the Panchayat Raj Act directly through the assembly instead of taking a vague, roundabout route," a senior BJP source said.
