Fauja Singh passes away in road accident at 114
Fauja Singh passed away on Monday following a road accident in his ancestral village in Jalandhar. He had become a symbol of endurance and hope, breaking records in international marathons well into his 100s and promoting fitness and healthy living.
Remembered worldwide for redefining age and fitness, Singh was fondly known as the 'Turbaned Tornado'.
Known as the 'Sikh Superman,' Fauja Singh rose to global fame after making his marathon debut at the age of 89 at the London Marathon in 2000. He went on to run in Toronto, New York, and other cities, becoming the oldest marathoner to complete the race in multiple age categories. His achievements challenged perceptions of age and physical capability.
National and state leaders pay tribute
Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab, expressed sorrow over Singh's death. 'Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and an enduring symbol of resilience and hope. Even at the age of 114, he continued to inspire generations with his strength and commitment."
He added, 'I had the honour of walking alongside him during the two-day 'Nasha Mukt - Rangla Punjab' march from his village Beas, district Jalandhar in December 2024. Even then, his presence infused the movement with unparalleled energy and spirit,' news agency ANI quoted Kataria as saying.
He added that Singh's legacy will continue to inspire those committed to a drug-free and healthier Punjab.
Former Punjab chief minister and BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh also condoled Singh's death. In a post on 'X', he wrote, 'Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner, at the age of 114 in a tragic road accident. His extraordinary life and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations.'
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit S Cheema echoed the sentiments, saying, 'Saddened to learn about the passing away of legendary athlete Sardar Fauja Singh at the age of 114 in an accident today. A global icon of endurance and inspiration, he proved that age is no barrier. His life and legacy will continue to motivate generations.'

TMC MP: Matuas in Pune called ‘Bangladeshi', held
Kolkata: Matua community members were now being arrested in Pune as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and police were refusing to accept their identity cards issued by All India Matua Mahasangha (AIMM), along with Aadhaar and EPIC, Trinamool MP Samirul Islam alleged on Tuesday. Citizenship has been a restive issue among Matuas, prompting AIMM to issue the identity cards. Islam, also chairperson of the Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board, said in a post on X: "Members of the Matua community are experiencing harassment at the hands of the police in BJP-governed Maharashtra." Islam said Pune Police on July 2 arrested Arush Adhikari, a Matua and a resident of Habra in North 24 Parganas. The next day, on July 3, police arrested Adhikari's wife Priyanka along with their six-month-old baby, as well as his sister Banita Biswas along with her two children. The cops also arrested Bongaon residents Shib Biswas and Bibek Goswami. I n all, five persons and three minors were now in custody, said Islam. The Adhikari family, which migrated to Pune for work, was allegedly detained and labelled "Bangladeshi" despite possessing all valid documents and the AIMM card bearing Thakur's signature, Islam claimed. "Pune Police are not accepting the documents," he said, alleging that the BJP leadership was attempting to discredit Bengali-speaking migrant workers by associating them with Rohingya. This latest harassment of Bengalis comes after similar incidents in Odisha, Assam and Rajasthan, Islam claimed. Trinamool's Rajya Sabha MP and Matua leader Mamata Bala Thakur criticised BJP for harassing people speaking Bengali while they had Matua Mahasabha cards signed by Thakur. Calls to Thakur's mobile went unanswered.

Meals at 5 per plate: Atal canteens in Delhi by Dec
New Delhi: Delhi govt is gearing up to launch 100 Atal Canteens across the city, which will offer meals at about Rs 5 per plate. The initiative aims to provide affordable and nutritious food at 100 locations, mostly near major construction sites and slum clusters, targeting daily wage workers and the urban poor. Senior officials said that govt is planning to complete some projects by the birth date of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Dec, in whose memory the canteens are named. In her 2025–26 Budget, chief minister Rekha Gupta, who also handles the finance portfolio, allocated Rs 100 crore to set up the canteens across the national capital. Minister Kapil Mishra said, "By the end of the year, we will be in a position to launch some canteens. We have started identifying places, and soon a report will be prepared and given to me on the areas where it can operate." "This is a significant step toward ensuring food security for Delhi's most vulnerable populations," Mishra said, adding, "We are committed to fulfilling our manifesto promises, and under CM Rekha Gupta, we have been starting one scheme after another, and we have started the process for this too. This is one of our promises." A similar model was rolled out in Haryana in BJP's tenure four years ago, where the Atal Kisan Mazdoor Canteens were opened in agricultural mandis. These provide a simple meal of chapatis, rice, dal and vegetables for just Rs 10. While Delhi's version will operate at half the price, the exact rate is yet to be finalised. The official rollout plan is expected to be announced around the birthday of PM Modi in Sept. Earlier, during 2017-2022, the MCDs launched a similar project, Atal Aahar Yojna, but could not continue it for long. The scheme was among BJP's most touted programmes in its manifesto before the 2017 MCD polls. Under the scheme, the plan envisaged by the civic body was to offer breakfast and lunch at a subsidised rate of Rs 10 and Rs 15, respectively, at nearly 40 places in Delhi. Officials said that this time, Delhi govt is working on different models to ensure that the scheme does not face hiccups. "We are exploring if we can allow vendors to cut losses they would face on account of providing subsidised food by selling confectionery or other items," an official said. Govt would also have to support the scheme, he added. Former MP Gautam Gambhir too launched a similar initiative during his tenure, where he offered food for Rs 1 at some places in his constituency. However, that scheme, too, became non-functional after he left active politics.

Matua migrants from Bengal being harassed in Pune: TMC MP
Amid reports of migrant workers from West Bengal being targeted in BJP-ruled States, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday alleged that those who belonged to the Matua community were facing harassment in Maharashtra. Rajya Sabha MP and chairperson of West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam said his office received information about 'police harassment of at least six members of the Matua community from North 24 Parganas, currently residing in Pune'. 'Members of our beloved Matua community have been facing harassment by the anti-Bengali BJP government in Maharashtra. Hatred in politics spares no one. BJP leaders are trying to malign Bengali-speaking migrant workers by branding them as Rohingyas,' the Trinamool Congress MP said. Mr. Islam in a social media post said, 'The Pune police are reportedly refusing to recognise identity cards issued by the All India Matua Mahasangha, besides EPIC and Aadhaar cards.' The TMC leader said BJP MP and Union Minister of State Santanu Thakur himself belongs to the Matua community and asked whether Matua brothers and sisters are Rohingyas? He said that his office has 'reached out to the affected family, which confirmed that the police have detained Arush Adhikary and at least five others, including minors, on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals'. Protest planned today The TMC leader said he will hit the streets of Kolkata today to protest against the targeting of migrants from West Bengals. Earlier, there have been reports of migrants from the State being harassed and detained in Odisha, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The Trinamool Congress had last week alleged that over 400 migrants from the State were detained in Odisha and the State's Chief Secretary wrote to his Odisha counterpart on the targeting of Bengali speaking migrants. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed protests to such incidents and said that speaking in Bengali does not make a person ' Bangladeshi'.
