Vijayawada: Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha announced that under the guidance of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the home department and Eagle Task Force have significantly curbed the menace of ganja in the state. Speaking to media at the Secretariat on Monday, the minister reiterated the government's commitment to making Andhra Pradesh drug and ganja-free. To achieve this, the Chief Minister formed a subcommittee comprising the education, excise, and tribal welfare ministers and established the Eagle Task Force, headquartered in Amaravati, with regional centres in Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam to prevent ganja cultivation and usage. CCTV cameras have been installed at vulnerable points to curb smuggling. The minister pointed out that last year, 2,114 drug peddlers were arrested, 831 cases were registered, and 293 vehicles were seized. Additionally, properties worth Rs 7.75 crore belonging to seven drug peddlers were confiscated. Under Operation Garuda, 100 joint teams conducted raids on medical shops statewide, resulting in the seizure of 150 shops for violating regulations. Anitha noted that during the previous YSRCP government, police from neighbouring states reported ganja smuggling originating from Andhra Pradesh. The situation has now improved, with ganja cultivation in the Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts eradicated and 31,185 alternative crop plants distributed to farmers. Awareness programmes are also being conducted in tribal areas to discourage ganja cultivation. Eagle Task Force IG Ravikrishna delivered a presentation on efforts to curb ganja cultivation and usage. He outlined rehabilitation measures for farmers transitioning away from ganja cultivation and shared plans to establish a data center to monitor and prevent drug usage. Large-scale awareness campaigns are also underway to promote a drug and ganja-free Andhra Pradesh, he said.

India on Monday described as ' regrettable ' reports of eggs allegedly thrown at devotees during a Rath Yatra procession in Canada's Toronto. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the matter had been taken up with Canadian authorities. This came after a woman participating in the procession noticed eggs allegedly being thrown at them from a nearby building and posted about it on social media, The Indian Express reported. The video was widely shared on social media. 'We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto,' ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday expressed concern about eggs being thrown at the event and said that the incident had caused deep anguish to the residents of the state. 'Such incidents not only grievously hurt the sentiments of Lord Jagannatha's devotees worldwide, but also cause deep anguish to the people of Odisha, for whom this festival holds profound emotional and cultural significance,' the Biju Janata Dal leader said on X. India aiming to emerge as global maritime hub, says Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal
VISAKHAPATNAM: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday inaugurated the second Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation ( BIMSTEC ) Ports Conclave here, stressing that India aims to emerge as a global maritime hub . Hosted by Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), the two-day conclave is themed as 'Navigating the Future: Blue Economy, Innovation & Sustainable Partnerships', bringing together ministerial delegations, port authorities, maritime experts, and business leaders from BIMSTEC member countries. "Prime Minister's Vision 2030 and 2047 aims to make India a global maritime leader," said Sonowal, addressing the conclave. He said the BIMSTEC Ports Conclave stands as a springboard to unlock the immense potential of blue economy from the Bay of Bengal region. "Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , India has a "Neighbourhood First" policy and in this sees BIMSTEC nations as key partners in regional prosperity," said Sonowal. Further, Sonowal said a BIMSTEC Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre is going to be established under the Indian Ocean Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Maritime Transport (IOCE-SMarT) at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai, Mumbai. He inaugurated multiple projects in the port, such as new oil refinery berth-2, fire fighting facilities at OSTT Berth, new port operating system, vessel traffic management system (VTMS) and others. Moreover, he laid the foundation stone for the construction of B-Ramp in the port area, finger jetty and wharf in fishing harbour, two additional breasting dolphins at OSTT and others.
