PCG: 17 fishers rescued near Bajo de Masinloc
In a statement, PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said the BRP Teresa Magbanua received a distress signal from the fishing vessel, FB Cassandra, on Thursday morning.
Tarriela noted that the rescue operation was urgent as FB Cassandra was stranded within the expected drop zone for China's rocket launch test between July 15 and 17.
The PCG vessel launched a towing operation despite rough seas with wave heights of up to six feet and winds moving up to 30 kph.
On Friday morning, BRP Teresa Magbanua reached the vicinity waters near Mariveles, Bataan where the towing line was transferred to tugboat TB Lucida for the final leg of the journey.
"During the operation, a medical team onboard BRP Teresa Magbanua conducted an initial health assessment of the crew, identifying one member with a hypertensive condition, who received immediate medical attention," Tarriela said.
Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal, is key maritime feature that China claims as its own in the West Philippine Sea.
The shoal is a triangular coral reef formation that surrounds a lagoon and is famed for its rich marine resources.
Last June, the Philippines accused China Coast Guard ships of carrying out aggressive maneuvers and targeting its fisheries vessels with water cannons while they were delivering supplies to Filipino fishermen to Scarborough Shoal.
Bajo de Masinloc is located 124 nautical miles off Masinloc, Zambales, and is considered within the Philippines' 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone, based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis."

The bodies of two fisherman in the Province of Guimaras earlier reported missing were retrieved on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The two fishermen were earlier reported missing off the coast of Barangay Sebaste, Sibunag town, Guimaras. Personnel from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) WASAR Team retrieved the body of a certain Vincent Paul Valles at 7:43 a.m. between Inampulugan and Natunga Islands in Sibunag a day after the incident was reported. US immigration policies not tackled during meeting with Trump
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. meets with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, D.C., July 22, 2025. REUTERS/ Kent Nishimura President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said the issue of the United States' immigration policies was not discussed during his meeting with US counterpart Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday. At a press conference with the Philippine media delegation, Marcos said that there had been no significant difference in the US immigration policies since Trump began his second term in January. Trump has vowed tough enforcement of immigration law and mass deportation of illegal migrants in the US. ''It's not been raised; it was not, not in this forum, but of course we are well aware of the situation,'' Marcos said. ''I think in our estimation with what the United States is doing now... It's not anything different [from] what they were doing before. Ito 'yung mga may record, mga wanted, convicted, lalong-lalo na kung sila ay illegal, TNT sila, 'yun ang mga pinapauwi nila (these are those with criminal records, wanted, convicted, and illegally staying),'' he added. The Philippine Embassy is providing assistance to undocumented Filipinos through immigration lawyers who offer legal advice and outline available options for them. However, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez has advised illegal immigrants—those who entered the US on tourist visas and then overstayed—to consider voluntarily leaving the country rather than waiting for the possibility of deportation. Recently, a Filipino was among at least 11 illegal aliens convicted of various crimes who were arrested during separate operations by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the individual as a 29-year-old illegal alien from the Philippines. He was arrested in Middlesex, Massachusetts. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
