Jerome Bettis describes the Kansas City Chiefs' strengths heading into 2025

USA Today03-07-2025
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Pro Football Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jerome Bettis, who is participating in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 9-13 at Edgewood Tahoe. Bettis shared his thoughts on the Kansas City Chiefs' strengths heading into the 2025 season, as well as his son, Jerome Bettis Jr., playing at his alma mater."I think people don't realize this team's (Chiefs) strength is not their offense. The strength of this team is its defense. As long as (Steve) Spagnuolo is there, he's the mad scientist with this defense, as long as that defense is intact. They can still get after the quarterback, and they're going to be a quality football team," said Bettis. "So I don't believe this is the last we've seen of the Kansas City Chiefs. I think they'll still be good next year. The question is, can you get to (Patrick) Mahomes? If the offensive line isn't that good, the Kansas City Chiefs probably won't be that good."Bettis understands the importance of living up to expectations, having been a perennial contender during his time with the Steelers and his legendary college career. The NFL Icon shared his thoughts on his son following in his footsteps and committing to play at Notre Dame for the upcoming season."Well, I've always talked to him about expectations, and I told him, you know, no one should be able to expect more from you than you expect from yourself. Don't go out there and think you need to do it because your dad played here or because your last name is Bettis; I said, you go out there and be the best version of yourself possible, work as hard as you can, and let that be your legacy." said Bettis, "I try to instill that in him because he does have this burden, if you will, of being my son, me, having played there, having success there, so I tell him, you're not following in my footsteps. I didn't play wide receiver; I didn't do the things that you've done. So you go out there and do what you can do, what you are blessed to do, and leave it all on the table. Leave it all out there. Give 110%, and you will be satisfied with what happens from there. I'm your dad. I'm gonna love you 110% and be your biggest cheerleader regardless of what happens. So, as long as he understands and knows that, I'm happy with whatever happens. I am the biggest fan right now, and I'm just so proud to watch him come out of the tunnel with that helmet on, getting ready for his first game. That's going to be a special moment for me."The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.

Steelers' Super Bowl Window Could Swing Wide Open With This Trade

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers were very aggressive throughout the course of the NFL offseason. Now, with training camp in full swing and the season coming up quickly, they cannot afford to lose that aggressiveness. Among the biggest offseason moves were the free agency signing of Aaron Rodgers, the trades to acquire DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Jonnu Smith, as well as the lucrative extension for T.J. Watt. All of those moves prove that the Steelers are all-in on competing for a championship. However, there is one area left that could become a concern throughout the year. Head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers looks on prior to the game against the New England Patriots at Acrisure Stadium on December 7, 2023 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Read more: Minnesota Vikings Receive Concerning Quarterback Update Those wide receivers could step up and have breakout seasons. Or, it's possible that Pittsburgh might not have enough offensive firepower to win it all. With that in mind, there is another aggressive move the Steelers could pursue to go even further all-in on winning a championship during the 2025 NFL season. Terry McLaurin has been locked into a contract standoff with the Washington Commanders. Due to that standoff, rumors have been running rampant about a potential trade sending him elsewhere. If Pittsburgh wants to win a Super Bowl, pulling off a trade for McLaurin would be a clear move to target. During the 2024 NFL season with the Commanders, McLaurin racked up 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. Adding that kind of production alongside Metcalf would give Rodgers arguably the best wide receiver duo in the NFL. While the Steelers do not necessarily "need" to trade for a player like McLaurin, the luxury of having two legitimate superstar wide receivers would make their offense very difficult to stop. Rodgers is also on a one-year contract with the intention of retiring after the season. The franchise has already gone so far in on the 2025 season that it shouldn't stop now. Should Washington actually place McLaurin on the trade block, the Steelers should be one of the most aggressive teams pursuing a deal for him. It may not be an option, but it's a possibility worth keeping an eye on. For more Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Washington Commanders' Nate Herbig Makes Shocking Decision

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Just a few days into training camp, the Washington Commanders found out that one of their veteran players no longer planned to be a part of the team. On Tuesday morning, the veteran offensive lineman Nate Herbig told the team he would be retiring. The Commanders announced on Tuesday that they have placed Herbig on the reserve/retired list. Herbig's departure comes as a shock. The guard is just 27 years old and didn't seem to be trending towards retirement when the offseason activities started up. In fact, he just signed with the Commanders to navigate through the 2025 NFL season with the team that just made an NFC Championship run. Nate Herbig #71 of the Pittsburgh Steelers walks off the field at halftime in the game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 16, 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nate Herbig #71 of the Pittsburgh Steelers walks off the field at halftime in the game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 16, 2023 in Indianapolis, hails from Hawaii and played his college ball at Stanford. He was a standout for three seasons and decided to enter the 2019 NFL Draft. There seemed to be a good chance Herbig could get selected in the later rounds, but he ended up going undrafted. Washington's rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, gave Herbig his first opportunity in the league. He signed with the team as an undrafted free agent and made the final roster for the 2019 NFL season. He would see the field for two games during his rookie effort. Throughout the 2020 NFL season, Herbig played a notable role for the Eagles. He appeared in 15 games, picking up 12 starts in those matchups. While he didn't become a full-time starter for the Eagles, he remained a go-to backup at the guard position throughout the remainder of his time in Philadelphia. By 2022, Herbig ended up on the New York Jets after getting waived by the Eagles. He was a starter for 11 games. At the end of the year, Herbig was placed on the injured reserve before hitting the free agency market. Ahead of the 2023 NFL season, Herbig signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last summer, heading into his second season with the Steelers, Herbig suffered an unfortunate setback. After learning he was dealing with a torn rotator cuff, Herbig's season concluded before it even started. He wouldn't play out the final deal of his Steelers contract. If Herbig decides to reverse his situation sometime soon, the Commanders could make room for him. For the time being, the 27-year-old veteran doesn't plan to play. Chiefs' Andy Reid Offers Major Injury Update on Hollywood Brown

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Kansas City Chiefs suffered three injuries to wide receivers during the team's padded practice on Tuesday. Xavier Worthy, Skyy Moore, and Hollywood Brown all suffered injuries. Read more: Chiefs' Hollywood Brown Exits Practice on Cart With Apparent Injury The most significant of the bunch was Brown, who was shown leaving practice on a cart. Leaving on a cart is never a good sign, and now Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has offered a major update on the receiver's injury. Chiefs coach Andy Reid says WR Hollywood Brown left practice with an ankle injury. "I don't think it's too bad, but we'll see." Reid says WR Xavier Worthy "banged his head." — Jeremy Bergman (@JABergman) July 29, 2025 When speaking to reporters, Reid stated, "I don't think it's too bad, but we'll see." Reid is referring to the ankle injury that Brown sustained. He also revealed that Worthy "banged his head," but there is no further information yet if the star receiver will be evaluated for a concussion. More news: Chiefs Practice Erupts in Fight as Rookie Star Throws Punch Moore was also revealed to have suffered a hamstring injury. Dealing with injuries is never a good thing, but to have three receivers be injured on the same day is quite concerning. It does sound like none of the injuries are severe, or severe enough that Reid had to withhold information. The issue is the ankle injury that Brown suffered and the hamstring injury Moore suffered could linger and lead to more time missed. The Chiefs dealt with plenty of injuries during the 2024 season, as Isiah Pacheco was lost for most of the season, as were Brown and Juju Smith-Schuster. Even with major injuries to the offensive playmakers on the team, Patrick Mahomes and company were still able to make it to the Super Bowl. The hope for 2025 is that the team would go into the start of the season unscathed, but that appears not to be the case. Brown suffered a sternoclavicular injury that led to him being ruled out for the entire 2024 season, though he was able to heal and return to the team for Weeks 16 and 17. He also participated in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Despite coming back, another major injury might cause the Chiefs to move on from the wide receiver. This is just speculation, but two major injuries and more missed time could lead to Brown being waived. For now, it appears that his ankle injury might not be that serious, at least according to Reid.
