Sabah polls: PBS rejects cooperation with BN
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has rejected political cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election.
PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the decision was made after the majority of the party's Supreme Council (AMT) members disagreed with collaborating with BN in the coming state election.
Joachim said PBS also reiterated its stance to remain loyal to the ruling coalition, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), for the upcoming polls.
"Our position is clear. PBS will continue working within the GRS coalition and remains committed to this political cooperation ahead of the state election.
"PBS also reaffirms its commitment to strengthening ties and collaboration with GRS component party Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (StarSabah), led by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan," he said in a statement today.
The current five-year term of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly will expire on November 11.

Apas has among most PGRS members

TAWAU: The Apas state constituency has emerged as one of the largest divisions under the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS), with more than 11,000 registered members, making it one of the 74 most populous divisions in the state. Apas PGRS Division Chief, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said the division has so far successfully established 180 registered branches, with three more expected to be registered in the near future. What makes the figures more significant, he said, is that nearly 10,000 of these members are registered voters in the Apas constituency, giving the party a strategic advantage ahead of the upcoming state election. Nizam, who is also the Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, said the growing number of members reflects rising public interest in PGRS and growing trust in the leadership of Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, who is both party president and Chief Minister. 'The Chief Minister is a visionary leader whose Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda has brought real progress and wellbeing to the people of this state. 'This is why people continue to place their confidence in his leadership as both Chief Minister and PGRS President. His clear and consistent direction has earned increasing support from the grassroots,' he said. Nizam, who is also the Apas assemblyman, was speaking to the media after officiating the PGRS Apas Annual Division Conference for the main body, Women's, Youth and Youth Women's wings, held at the Tawau Community Hall on Saturday, which drew nearly 3,000 delegates and observers. He said the large turnout at the event demonstrated the strong commitment of Apas PGRS members to ensure the seat remains with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming 17th State Election (17th GE). On preparations for PRN17, Nizam said he was satisfied with the level of readiness and commitment shown by the PGRS Apas Polling District Centre (PDM) committees. 'Thank God, Apas is ready. PDM operation rooms have been set up, and our party machinery has been activated. Grassroots engagement is ongoing to identify voters and ensure a strong turnout during the polls. 'I am very pleased with the commitment shown. Now we're simply waiting for the official announcement of 17th GE,' he said. As for the conference, Nizam said it would be the last before the next state election, as the current term is set to expire in November. He added that a large delegation from Apas will attend the PGRS Annual General Assembly scheduled to be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from 25 to 27 July. Sabah PKR ‘ready for any possibility'

'We thought that was it… but when this latest incident happened, we were quite shocked. We are now analysing its impact. 'I believe this will, to some extent, change the political landscape in the state,' he said, after chairing the party's state leadership council (Majlis Pimpinan Negeri) meeting Sunday. A news portal reported that a new video — allegedly involving leaders from GRS component parties Star and PBS — has been recorded but not yet made public. The footage is said to show discussions on political support and payments amounting to several million ringgit. Mustapha said party machinery across Sabah has been told to stay alert and prepare for any possibility. 'We need to be ready for any possibility that may happen because of this latest video incident,' he said. On possible cooperation with other parties, he said formal talks with GRS have not started, but PKR is open to it. 'GRS also wants to work with Pakatan Harapan and we welcome that. I think it's time for us to start discussions — maybe over coffee first,' he said. Meanwhile, negotiations with Barisan Nasional (BN) are almost complete. 'We've met with BN many times already and there's only about 5pc left to resolve,' he said. He also said culaan — ground-level voter profiling — is being carried out to understand the level of support in different areas. 'Through these culaan activities, at the very least, we'll know the level of voter support… and that will become our basis when negotiating with any party that wants to work with us.' During the meeting, Sabah PKR also announced its new state leadership line-up. Mustapha remains as chairman, with Datuk Peto Galim as deputy and state election director. Former Sabah PKR chief Datuk Christina Liew has been appointed party adviser, alongside Abdul Rahman Yakub. Vice-chairmen are Datuk Sangkar Rasam, Azmi Datu Tambuyung and Mohd Amin Mem. Datin Rupinah Pangeran and Zaidi Jatil continue as the heads of the women and youth wings respectively. Other appointments include Abdul Razak Jamil as secretary and co-election director, Stefly Said as treasurer, Ahmad Farid Sainuri as information chief, Mohd Guntur Sangkar as communications director, Grace Lee as organising secretary, and Ag. Husaini Ag. Zahid: No formal appeals received from any individual to rejoin Umno
BENTONG: Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party has not received any formal applications or appeal letters from individuals seeking to return to Umno, except for two former members of parliament whose reinstatements have been approved. The two are Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif, Zahid confirmed. Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said that he nevertheless respected the motion passed by the Sembrong Umno division calling on the party's top leadership to lift Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein's suspension without any condition. "However, the matter has already been brought to the political bureau for discussion by the Johor Menteri Besar (Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi) in his capacity as the Johor Umno liaison committee chairman. "For the record, the standard procedure requires individuals wishing to rejoin Umno to submit an official letter to the party's headquarters. "I would also like to stress that I do not have absolute power to suspend membership, block individuals, or issue any warnings," he told reporters after attending the Bentong Umno division delegates' meeting here today. Zahid added that all decisions related to such matters would be referred to and decided by the Umno Supreme Council. "Umno has always upheld the values of goodwill and openness, as outlined since the leadership era of the late Datuk Onn Jaafar. "If any individual has made mistakes in the past, it is up to the Supreme Council to make the appropriate assessments and decisions. "We must avoid making judgments based on slander or narrow political sentiments," he said. Commenting on discussions with the Sabah Chief Minister on the upcoming Sabah polls, Zahid said that during a meeting last week with Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, both parties agreed to proceed with negotiations to finalise cooperation between the involved parties. "A special meeting is being arranged to discuss the allocation of seats suitable for contesting by Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH), or other parties ahead of the 16th General Election. "We must learn from previous state elections, where up to eight-cornered fights occurred, ultimately confusing voters and reducing chances of victory," he said. He added that political cooperation must be based on strategy, current realities, and public sentiment - not merely party logos. "Umno is also moving forward with a new approach, including content sharing through online media, strategic use of social media, and communication efforts that are closer to the people. "We must progress further in our political thinking and not remain trapped in old narratives often played up by the opposition," he said.
