Pakistani state up to its eyeballs in cross-border terror: EAM Jaishankar
New York/New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said it is very clear that the Pakistani state is 'up to its eyeballs' in cross-border terrorism, and India has made its message "pretty clear' to Islamabad that it will exercise the right to defend its people. 'We are now moving to a policy of no impunity. We will not accept that the terrorists are proxies and somehow, therefore, the state is not culpable. I mean, we think it's very clear the Pakistani state is up to its eyeballs in this one," EAM Jaishankar said in an Exclusive Fireside Chat with Dev Pragad, Newsweek CEO, in New York. "I think we will strike at terrorists. We will protect. We will exercise the right to defend our people. And I think that message has been made pretty clear." On Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressing readiness for peace talks last week, EAM Jaishankar said: "We are willing to hold talks on terror, but if there is an expectation that we will talk about other things while they continue their terrorism, I think that's, you know, that's not realistic," he said. "Terrorism cannot be a diplomatic tactic of putting a neighbour under pressure, and saying, oh, OK, come and talk to me. You cannot be a good neighbour and be a terrorist at the same time. So, they have to end that terrorism." India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, in response to the horrific April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were shot dead. Indian armed forces struck terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor, which led to a military stand-off between both nations, which ended on May 10 with a ceasefire. On Pakistan warning that it could resort to nuclear weapons during the military stand-off, EAM said: "We are not going to yield to nuclear blackmail that you know there could be escalation, and therefore we should not do anything." Militaries of India, France hold joint drills
Indian and French militaries carried out a two-week wargame in France that focused on boosting joint operational preparedness to deal with security challenges. About 50 armoured and tactical vehicles and fighter jets were deployed in the Indo-French army exercise Shakti that was held from June 18 to July 1. The exercise involved more than 500 legionnaires and military personnel from various units of the French Army, the Foreign Legion, as well as the French Air and Space Force, and the French Navy, according to a French readout. The Indian contingent of 90 personnel primarily comprises a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles besides personnel from other arms and services. The joint drills were held in Aveyron in Monclar district, and in Herault. Exercise Shakti was a vital opportunity for Indian and French military personnel to boost joint operational preparedness for facing the toughest combat situations in a sub-conventional environment, the readout issued by the French embassy said. "Serving as an effective platform for exchanging best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPS), exercise Shakti will pave the way for deeper cooperation and mutual respect between the French and the Indian armed forces as well as significantly reinforcing the Indo-French defence partnership," it added. The participation of legionnaires in the exercise is seen as significant. Created in 1831 and the French Foreign Legion is engaged in all major operations carried out by the French Army. The elite military unit is open to foreigners who want to serve in the French Army. Indo-French defence exercises such as Exercise Garuda between the air forces, exercise Varuna between the navies and exercise Shakti between the armies, are held regularly and have grown in scope and complexity over the years. They attest to the shared commitment of both nations towards peace, stability, and global security, the embassy noted.

India, Pakistan exchange lists of prisoners in each other's custody
Pakistan and India on Tuesday exchanged the lists of prisoners in each other's custody, with Islamabad submitting names of 246 Indian or believed-to-be-Indian detainees, including 53 civilians and 193 fishermen. The Agreement on Consular Access, 2008 requires both sides to share the lists of prisoners in each other's custody on January 1 and July 1, every year, according to a statement by the Foreign Office. Pakistan handed over a list of 246 Indian or believed-to-be-Indian prisoners (53 civilian prisoners and 193 fishermen) to a representative of the Indian High Commission, Islamabad, the Foreign Office said. Today, Pakistan and India exchanged, through diplomatic channels, the lists of prisoners in each other's custody, the FO said. Simultaneously, India shared a list of 463 Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners (382 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen) to a diplomat from the High Commission for Pakistan, New Delhi. Pakistan has called for the immediate release and repatriation of all those Pakistani prisoners and fishermen who have completed their respective sentences and whose national status stands confirmed. A request for special consular access has also been made for all believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners, including the physically- and mentally-challenged prisoners for expeditious confirmation of their national status, the FO said. The Indian side has also been urged to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all Pakistani prisoners in Indian custody, the FO said. Pakistan will continue its endeavours to ensure the early return of all Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails, it added.
