While rumours of such a merger have circulated since late 2024, the company had never formally announced the project. At the time, reports suggested it would be a multi-year effort to fold ChromeOS into Android – a shift that now appears to be under Google has not shared a timeline or full details, Samat's comments suggest that the goal is to create a more seamless cross-device experience – one that bridges laptops, tablets and smartphones more effectively. This move could potentially also strengthen Android's position across multiple form factors and help Google build tighter integrations between its ecosystem of devices. The transition won't happen overnight. Back in early 2024, Google began laying the groundwork by merging key parts of the Android kernel into ChromeOS. The company said the change would enable faster adoption of AI features across devices. The confirmed merger appears to be the next logical step.
