PM arrives in Azerbaijan to attend ECO Summit
Leading a high-level delegation, Shehbaz will share Pakistan's perspective on key regional and global challenges while reaffirming commitment to the ECO Vision 2025.
Apart from advocating for enhanced intra-regional trade, transport connectivity, energy cooperation, and sustainable development, the premier will also hold bilateral meetings with other ECO leaders on the sidelines of the Summit to discuss matters of mutual interest.
Pakistan is among the founding members of the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD), formed back in 1964, along with Iran and Turkiye, which was rechristened as ECO in 1985.
With 10 member countries, the regional trade of ECO nations amounts to $76 billion, making it a key regional forum for the promotion of trade and investment as it connects the north to south, south and east to the west, Asia to Europe and Eurasia to the Arab world.
The organisation, in the past few years, has emerged as a platform for 'economic diplomacy and activism'.
Pakistan had hosted the 13th ECO summit back in 2017, wherein the member countries' heads of states/governments had endorsed and adopted the ECO Vision – 2025.

According to officials familiar with the development, the prime minister will be accompanied by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The visit is likely to take place in August, with exact dates currently being finalised through diplomatic channels. The upcoming trip by Pakistan's top civil and military leadership carries added significance in the wake of the four-day military conflict with India during which Pakistan gained the upper hand, with its Air Force shooting down six Indian fighter jets, including the French-made Rafale. The conflict drew attention to China's military hardware, with several Western capitals closely monitoring the developments in South Asia. Chinese-made J-10C fighter jets and beyond-visual-range PL-15 missiles played a critical role. However, it was Pakistan's indigenous systems integration that made the Chinese hardware even lethal. During a recent visit to Pakistan, the chief of the Chinese Air Force expressed a keen interest in learning from Pakistan's combat experience and multi-domain operations. In a related development, the Indian Deputy Chief of Army Staff recently claimed that India was engaged in a two-front conflict, while pointing out Chinese involvement in Pakistan's military success. Pakistan procures 80 per cent of its military hardware from China. However, the Pakistan army chief at a recent Corps Commanders' meeting clarified that the May conflict was "unmistakably bilateral". When asked about the Indian general's claim, a senior Chinese official reportedly laughed off the assertion. The official reaffirmed that while Pakistan and China enjoy long-standing defence cooperation, Beijing has no desire to see conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. He noted that China consistently encourages both countries to resolve disputes through dialogue. Meanwhile, ahead of the prime minister's scheduled visit, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is expected to travel to Beijing this week. According to a Foreign Office statement, Dar will lead the Pakistani delegation at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting, taking place from July 14 to 16 in Tianjin, China. The visit comes at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Foreign ministers from all SCO member states, including Pakistan, China, Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, will participate in the CFM. Belarus will attend for the first time as a full member. The CFM is the third-highest decision-making body within the SCO framework. It deliberates on issues related to international relations and the foreign and security policies of member states. The council also finalises key documents, declarations and decisions that are later considered by the Council of Heads of State (CHS). The next CHS meeting is scheduled for August 31 to September 1, 2025, in Tianjin. During his trip, Dar is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the CFM session.

$5bn Pakistan-Turkiye bilateral trade goal: PM urges MoC to set specific targets
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Ministry of Commerce to set specific targets, along with a clear mechanism and milestones, to progress toward achieving the longstanding goal of $5 billion in annual bilateral trade with Turkiye, well-informed sources told Business Recorder. Despite repeated commitments at the highest levels to increase trade, progress has remained limited— even though the Trade in Goods Agreement between Pakistan and Turkiye has been in effect since May 1, 2023. Under this agreement, Pakistan has secured preferential access to the Turkish market across 261 tariff lines, covering both traditional and non-traditional sectors such as leather, rice, dates, mangoes, cutlery, sports goods, seafood, processed agricultural products, rubber tubes and tyres, plastics, and engineering goods. Pakistan, Turkiye reaffirm commitment to boost ties, target $5 billion trade volume In return, Turkiye has been granted concessions on 130 tariff lines, including items such as black tea, processed food products and flavourings, industrial raw materials, machinery parts, and electronic equipment components. Both countries have set a strategic medium-term goal of enhancing bilateral trade to $5 billion, as part of their broader economic partnership. A key step in this direction was the Framework Agreement for Establishing a Free Trade Area, signed on March 22, 2016, expressing mutual commitment to gradually liberalise trade in goods. Pakistan had undertaken extensive negotiations on the Trade in Goods Agreement in consultation with public and private stakeholders. The agreement represented a major breakthrough in Pakistan-Turkiye economic relations and was a central focus during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Turkiye from May 31 to June 2, 2022. On July 7, 2025, during a meeting to review bilateral ties with Turkiye, the Prime Minister issued a series of decisions and directives to relevant ministries and departments. Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Economic Affairs have been directed to propose date of next Joint Ministerial Commission meeting in August 2025 instead of September 8-9, 2025. Ministry of Defence (Aviation Division) will arrange a small meeting to discuss outsourcing of airports to Turkish firm. Pakistan's Ambassador in Ankara to follow up PM's discussion with Turkish President regarding to G2G agreement with regard to world-class Turkish Consultant firm for Jinnah Medical Complex and Danish University. He would also pursue cooperation of ship-breaking industry with the Turkish firms. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has been directed to follow up with a Turkish company on both offshore and onshore exploration in Pakistan. Prime Minister has directed Ministry of Railways to continue active follow up with Turkish side on the Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad Railway Project. Azad Jammu and Kashmir Government has to allot at least 20 acres of land to MAARIF Foundation preferably in Muzaffarabad or in Mirpur if acceptable to Turkish side. Ambassador of Pakistan in Ankara has to pursue with Turkish firms GIB for a G2G arrangement with FBR and developing a digitised cargo Tracking System. Advisor to PM has to send a letter to Ambassador in this regard. Rallies, seminars mark Kashmir Martyrs Day
Various rallies were organised by different religious and political parties to celebrate Kashmir Day. PHOTOS: AGENCIES Kashmiris living on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), and across the world, observed the Kashmir Martyrs' Day on Sunday to pay tributes to the martyrs of July 13, 1931 massacre, and all those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. The day was marked by a complete shutdown in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and a march towards the Martyrs' Graveyard at Naqashband Sahib in Srinagar, where the 22 martyrs of July 13, 1931 tragedy, are laid to rest. To honour the martyrs, rallies, seminars, and conferences were organised by the Kashmiri organisations in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan, and major capitals across the world. In Muzaffarabad, a smartly-turned-out Police contingent presented salute at the Shuhada Monument in the morning as a mark of respect to the Shuhada. The Pasban-e-Hurriatyat also arranged a protest rally at Burhan Wani Shaheed Chowk. Later in the day, the Kashmir Liberation Cell in collaboration with All Parties Hurriyat Conference AJK Chapter arranged a public gathering followed by a mass rally in Muzaffarabad. Meanwhile, President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan's political, moral, and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people in their separate messages on the occasion of Kashmir Martyrs' Day. President Zardari lauded the unwavering courage, determination, and sacrifices of the Kashmiri people, who resisted the Indian occupation for decades and continued their struggle for self-determination. "Pakistan pays tribute to the bravery, determination and sacrifices of the Kashmiri people, who have stood firm against Indian rule for decades and continue to struggle for their freedom," he said. "The great struggle that the Kashmiri people are carrying forward today is a continuation of the sacrifices of these 22 martyrs. The candle of freedom that their sacrifice lit in the hearts of the Kashmiri nation is still burning brightly today." He urged the international community and human rights organisations to take immediate notice of the Indian-state terrorism and grave human rights abuses in the occupied territory. "Pakistan will continue to provide political, moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri brothers until they achieve their right to self-determination in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council," he concluded. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, said that the people of Kashmir had continued to sacrifice their lives in pursuit of their legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination. "Today, the government of Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to the resolution of the Kashmir issue and the right of self-determination of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with United Nations resolutions," he said.
