In UK, Yunus says no direct communication with British PM

London, Jun 12 (PTI) Bangladesh interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said that he has had no direct communication with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in connection with the recovery of 'stolen money' allegedly under the previous Hasina regime in Dhaka.
'I have no direct conversation with him,' Yunus told the 'Financial Times' with reference to Starmer. 'I have no doubt he would support us. This is stolen money… We need the support from the people of Great Britain,' he said.
The 84-year-old Nobel Laureate took over as the head of the interim government after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in a massive student-led protest in Bangladesh in August last year. She is believed to be living in exile in India since then.
In December, an anti-graft panel in Bangladesh had launched an investigation against Hasina and her family in connection with the allegations of embezzling USD 5 billion in the Rooppur nuclear power plant.
Yunus, who is currently in the UK on a four-day visit, is on a mission to 'bring out more enthusiastic support,' the Chief Adviser added.
Hasina's niece and Labour party MP in UK, Tulip Siddiq, had resigned as a minister in the Starmer Cabinet in the wake of allegations against her family benefitting from Hasina's Awami League regime.
She has denied any wrongdoing and had sought her own meeting with Yunus during his UK visit.
'This is a legal issue… a legal process. It's not personal involving me,' said Yunus, refusing any meeting with Siddiq.
On June 1, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal indicted Hasina, in absentia, and two others on several charges, including mass murder, for their alleged role in the violent crackdown on student-led protests last year. PTI AK NPK NPK

6-Year-Old British Boy Detained In Rs 18.8 Crore Drug Bust In Mauritius
A six-year-old British boy was detained in Mauritius after customs officials found 14 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside his suitcase. According to The Telegraph, the child was detained alongside seven other people at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport on Sunday. The group was reportedly carrying more than 161 kilograms of cannabis, worth 1.6 million pounds (approximately Rs 18.8 crore), hidden in the luggage. Seven of the suspects were British, including the boy whose luggage contained 24 packages of drugs wrapped in clear cellophane. The group was stopped at the main international airport in Mauritius as they disembarked from a British Airways flight from Gatwick, per the outlet. The boy's mother was also arrested and had 17kg hidden in her own bags. The eighth suspect was reported to be a Romanian living in Britain. He was allegedly holding 32 packages of cannabis. Mauritian authorities described the use of a child to transport drugs as "outrageous and inhumane", adding, "This is one of the most revolting cases we have encountered in recent years". The boy was unaware of the contents of his bags. He was flown back to the UK on Wednesday and is staying with his father. Authorities discovered 11 Apple AirTags, suggesting links to a drug gang. The drugs cache was found during a joint operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (ADSU) at the airport. Closed since 2021, British era school in Nellore to reopen on July 6
Tirupati: IT and HRD minister Nara Lokesh will re-open the famous British era VR school in Nellore on July 6. The 150-year-old school was shut down in 2021 during the erstwhile YSRCP regime. Municipal administration minister Ponguru Narayana, who studied at the school and also started his teaching career from the same institution, vowed to revive it if NDA formed the govt in Andhra Pradesh. The minister kept his promise and put all efforts to revive the school after NDA won and formed the govt. With Nagarjuna Construction Company extending a financial assistance of Rs 15 crore under its CSR activities, the school campus has undergone a complete revamp in the last few months. With international standard classroom infrastructure and amenities in place, VR school opened for admissions recently and close to 1,000 students from economically underprivileged sections of the society were provided admissions for this academic year. Narayana said Lokesh will formally re-open the school on July 6.
