Forge FC eliminate CF Montreal from Canadian Championship for second consecutive year

MONTREAL – Tristan Borges and Kyle Bekker scored three minutes apart to lift Hamilton's Forge past CF Montreal on Wednesday with an aggregate score of 3-2 in the quarterfinal of the Canadian Championship. Forge has now eliminated Montreal in the club tournament's quarterfinals in back-to-back seasons. Prince Owusu scored a brace for Montreal of Major League Soccer in the 58th minute and again five minutes into injury time. Borges tied it in the 79th minute and Bekker gave Forge, representing the Canadian Premier League, a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute. Entering the game trailing 1-0 on aggregate, Montreal started with aggressive pressure and maintained possession for most of the game. Bombarding the Forge goal and forcing them to drop into a low block, Montreal would need to win by two goals to advance without a penalty shootout, despite having only scored two or more goals at Stade Saputo just once this year. Montreal's first big chance came just after the 15-minute mark when a free kick from Dante Sealy was mishandled by Forge keeper Jassem Koleilat. Just four minutes later, Joel Waterman appeared to have been brought down in the area, but the ref deemed it not worthy of a penalty. Montreal's control over the tempo of play continued through the first half, but they could not manage to find the final ball needed to open the scoring. CF Montreal continued the pressure in the opening minutes of the second half, but after less than five minutes, the stadium lost power. After a 20-minute delay, play resumed. Sealy received the ball from a turnover and played in Owusu, who needed two attempts before finding the back of the net. Montreal continued to press in the ensuing minutes, looking ot take an aggregate lead in the tie, but were denied on several occasions by excellent saves from Koleilat. As the game progressed, Forge was able to find their footing and create some offence. Three minutes apart, Borges and Bekker would find the back of the net in similar fashion after unloading shots from the same spot outside the penalty area. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. With nothing left to lose, Montreal threw more bodies forward in an effort to get back into the tie. Owusu added a second, but there was too little time for another. UP NEXT Montreal: Will travel to Orlando City FC on Saturday. Forge: Will match up with Atletico Ottawa on the road on July 12. Frost sign first-rounder Kendall Cooper to 2-year deal

Field Level Media 09 Jul 2025, 23:49 GMT+10 (Photo credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images) The Minnesota Frost signed 2025 first-round pick Kendall Cooper to a two-year contract on Wednesday. The 23-year-old blueliner was the No. 6 overall pick in last month's draft out of Quinnipiac University. 'We are thrilled to have Kendall locked in for the next two seasons in Minnesota,' Frost general manager Melissa Caruso said. 'She will be an immediate contributor to our blueline, boosting our offense and will also be a great fit in our locker room. Kendall has consistently demonstrated a strong and steady presence defensively, and we expect she'll live up to the standards set in Minnesota by the rest of our defensive corp.' Cooper, an Ontario native, recorded 116 points (33 goals, 83 assists) in 158 career games with the Bobcats from 2020-25. 'It has been an exciting couple of weeks since the draft and I'm very happy to get this done,' Cooper said. 'I'm looking forward to returning to Minnesota in the fall for the start of the season, and I can't wait to play in front of the great Frost fans in the State of Hockey!' --Field Level Media

CFL suspends Turay, fines three others for their roles in post-game melee

B.C. Lions' Kemoko Turay, left, tackles Montreal Alouettes quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson (4) during second half CFL football action in Montreal, Saturday, July 5, 2025. (Graham Hughes / The Canadian Press) TORONTO — The CFL on Wednesday suspended B.C. Lions defensive lineman Kemoko Turay for one game and fined three others for their roles in a post-game altercation last week. The incident occurred following B.C.'s 21-20 road win over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday night, which ended on Sean Whyte's 43-yard field goal. Turay and Montreal defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund became involved in an altercation outside the Alouettes' locker room, prompting others to join in. Turay received a one-game ban for committing a non-football act — inciting a post-game altercation. Adeyemi-Berglund and Montreal's M.J. Sherman received fines for committing a non-football act — engaging in a post-game altercation — while Alouettes offensive lineman Pier-Olivier Lestage was also fined for making inappropriate contact with a TSN camera operator. CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston oversees suspendible offences, while discipline is handled by the league's department of health, safety and integrity. The department includes chief football operations officer Greg Dick, vice-president of officiating Darren Hackwood, associate vice-president of football operations Ryan Janzen and associate vice-president of health and safety Eric Noivo. 'Non-football acts negatively impact the reputation and professional standing of the CFL and they will not be tolerated,' Johnston said in a statement. 'These actions do not reflect the values of our league. 'The post-game altercation in Montreal became an unnecessary focal point, taking away from an incredibly entertaining game won on the final play.' The CFL also announced Wednesday that Ottawa linebacker Frankie Griffin was fined for delivering a high hit on Edmonton quarterback Tre Ford. As per CFL policy, the league does not announce the amounts of player fines. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 9, 2025.
