‘Representation matters': Barbie launches first doll with type 1 diabetes

In Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, Barbieland is a haven of equality and diversity. But although the dolls have been around since 1959, it was only in 2019 that the manufacturer, Mattel, started selling Barbies with physical disabilities. Mattel has now launched its first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes, the latest addition to a range it says has been designed 'to enable more children to see themselves reflected and encourage doll play that extends beyond a child's lived experience'. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. It is often diagnosed in childhood, and patients have to monitor their glucose levels and take insulin every day. The new Barbie has been designed in partnership with the global type 1 diabetes not-for-profit Breakthrough T1D. The doll wears a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) on her arm to help manage her condition, and to keep it in place she uses (Barbie pink) heart-shaped medical tape. Barbie also carries a mobile phone with a CGM app to help track her blood sugar levels throughout the day. The doll wears an insulin pump, providing Barbie with automated insulin dosing as needed, and holds a bag big enough for any essentials such as snacks that she might need while out and about. Announcing the new doll, Krista Berger, senior vice-president of Barbie and global head of dolls, said it marked 'an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation'. 'Barbie helps shape children's early perceptions of the world, and by reflecting medical conditions like T1D, we ensure more kids can see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.' The first black Barbie dolls were introduced in the 60s and hispanic dolls in the 80s, while many dolls in careers under-represented by women were added in the 90s and 00s. Until six years ago, there were no Barbies with disabilities. Today there are more than 175 different Barbie looks in the fashionistas range, with various skin tones, eye colours, hair colours and textures, body types and disabilities. They include a blind Barbie, a black Barbie with Down's syndrome, dolls with hearing aids, prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs, and a Barbie with vitiligo. Barbie is not the only brand to focus on diversity. Lottie has dolls with Down's syndrome and autism, while Lego sells a variety of minifigures with physical and non-visible disabilities. Responding to the announcement, Arjun Panesar, founding chief executive of said: 'Representation matters – especially in childhood. Seeing a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes helps normalise the condition, reduce stigma and show children that they are not alone. 'It's a positive step forward in building confidence, inclusion and understanding around living with diabetes.'

Heartbreaking story of lonely hospital patient who nobody knows or wants

A man found unconscious on a California street been lying in a hospital bed for more than three weeks and no one knows who he is, where he came from, or whether anyone is even looking for him. The unidentified patient, believed to be in his mid-40s, was rushed to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach on June 15. A chilling photo released by Dignity Health shows the man lying in a hospital bed, unconscious and hooked up to a breathing machine. He was found unresponsive near West Anaheim Street between Daisy and Pacific avenues. When he was found, he had no ID, no wallet, or documents. More than three weeks later, no friends, family, or acquaintances have come forward in connection to the patient. Not a single visitor has walked through the doors to ask about him. Hospital officials say the man is Hispanic and around 5ft 2in tall and weighs roughly 165 pounds. He has brown eyes, brown hair, and a brown and gray beard. The man does not have any tattoos or distinguishing marks that could help identify him. Officials have not revealed his medical condition due to privacy laws. It is unclear how critical his condition is at this time or if it is deteriorating as time goes on. The hospital is making a desperate appeal to the public to help identify the mystery man. Anyone who may recognize him or have any information is urged to call St. Mary Medical Center at 562-491-9381. There are thousands of unidentified patients who are admitted to US hospitals each year. Public hospitals like LA County+USC Medical Center can see up to 1,000 unidentified patients in a year. Last October, officials asked the public to help identify a seriously ill patient who was surviving on life support at a California hospital. Staff at the Riverside Community Hospital in the north of the suburb tried to put a name to the man who came through their doors on September 28, 2024. They have refused to say what is wrong with him or why he is attached to a ventilator, but have issued a photograph in the hope that someone can put a name to the face. 'Hospital Case Management and Social Worker teams have exhausted resources in attempting identification, including working with the Riverside Police Department,' managers said in a statement at the time. Dr. Chase Coffey, associate medical director of inpatient services at LA County, said such cases are common at the hospital, which is one of the largest in the country. However, he added that for a patient to remain at the hospital for five months without being identified is rare. He added that those patients are often either homeless, carrying false identification or may be undocumented. 'They could be trauma victims,' he explained.

America's best city is named in prestige poll... but beautiful spot was recently involved in horrific incident

A New Mexico city was rated the top in the US for its stunning views and good food, but it was recently involved in a horrific tragedy. Santa Fe, the state's capital, was rated number one of Travel and Leisure's 2025 best US travel destinations. The town of 89,000, known for its unique Spanish-style architecture and sand-colored buildings, scored an 88.80 out of 100 by 180,000 readers in the survey, beating out popular major cities like New York City, which ranked eighth. Readers loved the city's New Mexican cuisine, as well as its art galleries and markets. The city sits in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and gets sunshine nearly all year round - a place readers called a 'true gem.' 'Every trip exceeds the last, with so many new things to discover,' one reader told the magazine. 'Santa Fe offers a multi-layer experience,' another said. However, the idyllic city was recently hit with a tragedy that has left many on edge. The city has recently undergone a tragedy after actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their home The 'best city' accolade comes as millions in the region have been warned to beware of Hantavirus - a deadly virus that recently claimed a notable resident's life. Actor Gene Hackman and his musician wife Betsy Arakawa were found dead in their home in February. Police have since determined that Arakawa died first around February 12 as a result of respiratory symptoms caused by the virus, which is passed on through rodent urine, saliva and feces. She was 65. Hantavirus is a rare but severe respiratory illness spread through exposure, typically inhalation, to rodent droppings. A report obtained by Daily Mail indicated that Arakawa had bookmarks on her computer suggesting that she had been researching medical conditions with symptoms similar to COVID-19 or the flu prior to her death. Hackman also had trace amounts of acetone in his system at the time of his death, which could be a product of 'diabetic- and fasting-induced ketoacidosis.' Hackman, who was suffering from advanced Alzheimer's disease at the time, is believed to have wandered around the couple's home alone after his wife's death. Due to the advanced condition, he may not have ever realized his wife had died. The actor, who was 95, died nearly a week later around February 18, from severe heart disease, while Alzheimer's and kidney disease were contributing factors. Hackman tested negative for Hantavirus. Mid-summer through the fall is a great time to visit the city for those who love wildflowers and hot temperatures, as it sits in the 80s and 90s Despite the tragedy, the New Mexico paradise beat out New Orleans, Louisiana, Charleston, South Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, and Alexandria, Virginia, which ranked in the top five. Mid-summer through the fall is a great time to visit the city for those who love wildflowers and hot temperatures, as it sits in the 80s and 90s. Winter is another great time to visit for those who love cold activities, like skiing. There are several art museums, including the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. O'Keeffe was a long-time resident of the area. It also has the Museum of Indian Art and Culture, the New Mexico History Museum, and the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art. It's also a hidden gem for spas, with some located around natural hot springs. Santa Fe also has plenty of hiking trails as its located in the mountains, many of them located along historic architectural sites.
