New Delhi Police chief orders daily foot patrols by senior officers

Hindustan Times3 days ago
On his first day in office, newly appointed Delhi Police commissioner SBK Singh directed all district deputy commissioners of police and station house officers to conduct two hours of foot patrol daily to improve police visibility in the capital city. The order was issued during a meeting with senior officers at the police headquarters on Friday. S.B.K. An officer familiar with the directive said the patrols will take place from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. 'The CP stressed that senior officers must also be seen on the ground, not just the lower ranks,' the officer said.
Singh also instructed that two officials — including a woman officer — must be present at all times at the public facilitation desk in every police station. While the woman officer will attend to complaints related to women, the second official will handle cybercrime related grievances.
In a bid to uphold the force's integrity, the commissioner asked assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) to keep a close watch on sub-inspectors in their jurisdictions. 'He flagged concerns over recent arrests of Delhi Police officials by the Central Bureau of Investigation on corruption charges and said ACPs must monitor investigating officers more closely, especially sub-inspectors,' said another officer present at the meeting.
The commissioner further told DCPs to inspect police stations in their districts regularly, not sporadically, and to ensure proper upkeep of facilities. 'He emphasised that police stations must maintain basic infrastructure standards and that public facilitation desks should be clean, staffed and fully functional,' the officer added.
Singh also reviewed the Independence Day security preparations and instructed DCPs to step up security checks in their respective areas.

7 Delhi cops ‘fail to intercept' dummy bomb during Independence Day mock drill, suspended

Seven policemen were suspended after allegedly failing to intercept a Delhi Police Special Cell team that snuck in with a dummy bomb during a mock drill at the Red Fort, officers said. Drills are being conducted across the national capital to test security arrangements ahead of Independence Day, they said. The authorities concerned will now review all security arrangements from scratch and implement an improved and revised plan, senior officers said. The seven policemen would also be subjected to a departmental inquiry, officers added. The mock drill, which exposed the security lapse, was just one among many that would be conducted in the run-up to the 79th Independence Day. Several security measures are already in place. A two-layered ring security system has been formed, comprising officers from the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP). Snipers, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos, drones, and 700 AI-enabled CCTV cameras with facial recognition facilities are also part of the arrangements. Some of the new security arrangements in place, as reported by The Indian Express on Monday, include an Under Vehicle Surveillance System. Large-scale mock emergency exercises, hotel inspections, and increased patrolling are among the measures that are already being implemented, said officers.

RG Kar anniv, I-Day set to keep cops on toes

1 2 Kolkata/Howrah: Kolkata Police is implementing extensive security measures ahead of Independence Day celebrations . One of the biggest concerns is a planned protest march to Nabanna by the West Bengal Students' Union on Aug 9, marking the anniversary of the RG Kar rape and murder. While the police are considering giving permission to HRBC for shutting down Vidyasagar Setu for 16 hours based on an appeal from the agency to carry out necessary repairs, they are also conducting recce on all important approaches to Nabanna to assess security requirements. The police are keen to avoid violence like last year when the previous year's march resulted in several officers being injured during clashes near Prinsep Ghat on Strand Road. The protest, called by the opposition leader, aims to unite female students who were allegedly assaulted during last year's incident. Senior police officials, led by the additional CPs, have conducted detailed route inspections since Saturday, focusing on key locations including Hastings Crossing, Kidderpore Road, and the Vidyasagar Bridge access points. Amid deadlock, PM to address NDA parliamentary party meeting today

. NEW DELHI: Amid the ongoing logjam in Parliament, PM Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led NDA parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, a get-together of the alliance's MPs that is being held after a considerable gap, and the first during the current session of Parliament. The NDA meeting also holds significance as filing of nomination papers for the election to the vice-president of India's post begins from Aug 7. The BJP-led bloc will have to announce its candidate - whose election to the post will be a certainty due to the alliance's majority in the electoral college - by Aug 21, the last date of nomination-filing and the monsoon session of Parliament. The electoral college for the vice-president poll includes MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the opposition also names a candidate - a distinct possibility - then the poll is scheduled to be held on Sept 9. The meeting comes in the middle of a session which has been a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united opposition's continuous protest against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by Election Commission. PM Modi is expected to speak on a host of issues as the opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body's alleged partisan conduct favouring govt, and the terror attack and Operation Sindoor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery Undo Sources said Modi may ask alliance MPs to counter the opposition's narrative and also boost the 'Tiranga Yatra' being organised in view of Independence Day. The parliamentary party is also likely to felicitate the PM for the success of Operation Sindoor and neutralisation of the terrorists involved in the attack. Since the 2024 LS elections, when BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the meeting of the party's MPs every session was expanded to include its allies. Before the last national elections, the PM used to address weekly meetings of the BJP parliamentary party during Parliament sessions.
