‘Angry Sanjay Leela Bhansali would hurl objects at me if I moved even slightly': Sooraj Pancholi recalls experience as SLB's assistant on Guzaarish

Indian Express28-05-2025
Actor Sooraj Pancholi, who assisted filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the film Guzaarish, recalled the experience. He said that he was the sixth or seventh assistant on the Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai-starrer, and had got the job as a teenager. Sooraj, the son of actors Zarina Wahab and Aditya Pancholi, lives in the same building as Bhansali. But, he said in a new interview, he no longer feels worthy of working with him. 'I'll approach him only for a lead role, and that too when I make a name for himself,' he said. Over the years, several of Bhansali's past collaborators have opened up about his temper.
Appearing on the Hindi Rush podcast, he was asked about his experience on the film Guzaarish. 'I would get scolded a lot, perhaps more than anyone else. I was the last AD, so I got a lot of gaalis from him. My job was also to sit on Hrithik sir's seat for lighting, and if you look left or right, a file would come flying at you. Not a mic… I learnt a lot. It's like how a mother is with her son. Agar do padenge nahi toh beta seekhega nahi (If you don't get smacked, you won't learn),' he said.

He said that he lives on the second floor, while Bhansali lives on the fourth floor of the same building. Asked if he has ever approached the filmmaker for an acting role, he said, 'No. I'll only approach him for work when I feel worthy, when I feel like I've made a name for himself. I'm not going to approach him for a side role, I'll only approach him for a lead role.' He said that he got the job as his assistant after having a chance encounter with Bhansali.
Several others have made similar comments about Bhansali in the past. At an event in 2021, Ranbir Kapoor had accused Bhansali of being physically violent with him when they worked together on Black. 'When I assisted Mr (Sanjay Leela) Bhansali (on Black), he used to really treat me as an assistant director. I used to be kneeling down for hours, he used to hit us, he used to abuse us… that only hardens you and prepares you for the world,' he said. He later told Neha Dhupia that he would never work with Bhansali again, but he changed his stance later, and they're now working together on Love & War.
In an interview with India Today, Bhansali addressed complaints about his temper, and said, 'If I'm not getting what I want, even if I lose my temper, what is wrong in it? If you're not getting a shot, and if someone is spoiling it, what will you do? People have made stories that I'm angry, that I'm badly behaved…'

Yuvika Chaudhary opens up about rumoured separation from Prince Narula, says she was living with her mother during pregnancy: ‘There was a huge distance between us…'

Last year, the media was abuzz with speculation about a possible separation between Yuvika Chaudhary and Prince Narula following the news of Yuvika's pregnancy. While neither of them addressed the rumours at the time, Yuvika has now spoken candidly about navigating those challenging moments and the strength she found with Prince by her side. In a heartfelt conversation on the Hindi Rush podcast, Yuvika shared her experience: 'Since I was pregnant, I didn't want to give those rumours too much importance. I chose to react subtly and didn't create a scene. I thought if I made a fuss, it would only get worse. but I didn't realise it would escalate regardless. For me, the pregnancy phase was far more important than any gossip. I believed that such things come and go in life, but the time I had with my pregnancy would never come back. So I ignored everything. But that ignorance weighed heavily on me. I realized that if I spoke out then, it might have only made things worse, so I chose silence.' She further added, 'Pregnancy meant more to me at that time. When the baby came, that became my priority, not answering questions from others. I built a wall around myself because I needed to focus on my life, my baby, and healing my body. I had to become strong enough to take care of my child. The changes happening in your body during pregnancy are something no one truly understands. I learned that your pain is yours alone. No matter how much you share it, it hurts the same. So, I decided it's better not to say anything or share my problems with anyone. I prefer to keep my struggles to myself rather than explaining or justifying them to others.' Speaking about Prince's support during this time, she said: 'He was a great support. Of course, life was busy, but as a couple, we needed to show understanding. There were misunderstandings because that phase naturally came with some confusion. But I knew it was just a phase and why it was happening. Pregnancy brings emotional ups and downs, mood swings where sometimes you're happy, sometimes sad, and sometimes you want your partner right beside you. He did whatever he could to be there for me. Looking at it from both perspectives helps. These phases come and go, but at the end of the day, what matters most is that a child is on the way.' Also Read | Yuvika Chaudhary shares struggles after conceiving through IVF at 41: 'I am unable to recognise myself' Yuvika also revealed that during this period they had other responsibilities to manage: 'At home, there was a lot of interior work going on. Prince had always wanted a bigger home where the baby could grow up. So, when my pregnancy happened, the renovation work also began. It was a busy time. I shifted to my mother's house because during pregnancy, you need lots of love and care. Prince could either focus on work or be with me, and he decided it was best for me to stay with my mom, where I'd get all the care I needed. Later, he also moved there for some time. Taking care of the house, shoots, and everything else was a lot. And I don't think it's a sin for a woman to live with her parents during pregnancy, everyone does it. But those who didn't understand this made it an issue. I was determined not to justify myself or give attention to such things, I just wanted to focus on the baby.' She also touched upon how the rumours affected Prince: 'Prince is a bit emotional; hearing things from people affected him. So I tried to talk to him through it. There was also a huge distance between us back then because he stayed at one place while I was at another. But that phase passed.' Prince Narula and Yuvika Chaudhary met on the sets of Bigg Boss Season 9. They married on October 12, 2018. After six years of marriage, they announced Yuvika's pregnancy in June 2024 and joyfully welcomed their daughter, Ekleen, in October that year.

Earlier, Rai condemned the edited version of his film, calling it the death of creativity, and mentioned that this was not his film. He also said nobody from the film's creative team agreed to providing a happy ending and using AI to do a social media post, he wrote, "I had no involvement in it. Nor did the team that originally made the film. Regardless of what it claims to be, this is not the film we set out to create. 'Raanjhanaa' was never just a film to us, it was a work crafted by human hands, shaped by human flaws and genuine emotion. What is currently being circulated is not a tribute, but a reckless hijacking that robs the piece of its intent, its context and its soul (sic)."Meanwhile, while speaking to India Today, the producers of the film said it was a deeply thoughtful move to offer joy to the audience, and experiment with new technologies to comply with the standards of world cinema. In a long statement, Eros International said, "The re-release of 'Raanjhanaa' in the Tamil market is part of Eros International's broader strategy to refresh and reintroduce classic cinematic works to newer audiences in regional markets. Over a decade since its original release, the film continues to resonate deeply, and the reinterpretation of its ending aims to extend its emotional legacy and relevance. This is a creative reimagining, not a replacement, and is consistent with global industry practices, including anniversary editions, alternate cuts, and modernised remasters (sic)."'Raanjhanaa', a love story also starring Abhay Deol, was originally released in theatres on June 21, 2013.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Sonam Kapoor
