Paris reopens River Seine to public swimming after century-long ban

Paris reopens River Seine to public swimming after century-long ban

The Guardian5 hours ago
Parisians and tourists flocked to take a dip in the River Seine this weekend after city authorities gave the green light for it to be used for public swimming for the first time in more than a century.
The opening followed a comprehensive clean-up programme sped up by its use as a venue in last year's Paris Olympics after people who regularly swam in it illegally lobbied for its transformation. The outgoing mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, also helped to champion the plans, jumping in the river herself before the Olympics.
About a thousand swimmers a day will be allowed access to three bathing sites on the banks of the Seine for free, until the end of August.
Extensive investments of about €1.4bn (£1.2bn) have been undertaken, including connecting more than 20,000 homes to the sewer system (the waste from which had hitherto been dumped directly into the Seine), improving water treatment facilities, and building substantial rainwater storage reservoirs equivalent in size to 20 Olympic swimming pools, to avoid overflows of sewage during rain storms.
Paris's efforts have been in part inspired by, as well as helping to inspire, similar popular projects in cities around Europe where campaigners have fought to reclaim waterways for swimming. Concerns over allowing city dwellers to cool down amid increasing summer temperatures have been at the heart of their arguments.
Despite health concerns that affected some Olympic training sessions last summer, as well as the men's triathlon event, races went ahead as planned, helping boost confidence in the public swimming plans. Tourist authorities predict it will become one of the most talked about pastimes of the season and act as a magnet for visitors. The bathing spots are located near to the Eiffel Tower – which is specially focused on swimming for families with small children – the Notre Dame Cathedral and the National library.
Lifeguards are present, and changing and shower facilities are also available. Water quality will be tested daily by health authorities, and a flag system will indicate how safe it is to swim. Diving is not permitted, due to the shallowness of the water.
In addition to the three Paris sites, 14 bathing spots beyond the city on the Seine and Marne rivers are planned, two of which on the Marne, already opened in June.
The French president, Emmanuelle Macron, now has no excuse not to fulfil one of his promises to the electorate – that he too would one day bathe in the Seine when it was possible to do so.

Borak: France won't rest on laurels after victory in U20 Summer Series

An Elina Folituu hattrick propelled Les Bleuettes to a dominant win in their 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series opener at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly. Emy Baudru, Zoe Jean, Tifen Lesieu, co-captain Anna Macipe and Cherrezade Saiki also crossed for France, and while Borak had nothing but admiration for her team's efforts, the prop explained her team has the potential to be even better during their second game on July 11. 'It was a really good game for us,' said the 21-year-old. 'But we will now go away and work on a few things since we have just under a week to work on the game for Ireland. 'We will rewatch the videos again to see what we have to work on, including the small details. 'We are excited for the game coming up next, especially since it's a big game against Ireland and hopefully we'll do better.' 😎 A recap of the results from yesterday's opening games in the #U6NSummerSeries — Six Nations Under-20s (@SixNationsU20) July 6, 2025 France started the game the stronger of the two sides and spent much of the first half camped inside the Italian 22 as they looked to assert their physical dominance. Despite the best efforts of Italy's defence, France benefitted time and again from their physicality, as well as their skill, with Folituu's treble – all scored off the back of rolling mauls – highlighting that fact. And Borak revealed taking the game to Italy early was always in the minds of her and her teammates and also praised the performances of some of the more junior members of the squad. 'It was always part of the game plan, and we just wanted to get the head start first,' she said. 'We were happy that the girls showed up, especially in the second half as well. 'I'm proud of the girls, especially since it's the first selection for some of them. 'Everything was positive and we're really happy for the win. 'We still have a lot to work on, and I still have a lot to work on personally. 'But it's the first game and we made it pretty good out there, and now we're just waiting for the next game and hopefully we'll do better in that next week.' Ireland head into the clash with France also having won their opening game of the competition, downing Wales 27-10 in a hard-fought encounter. Both sides are really going from back to front quickly. We know that's a strength of both of theirs. Update: Date: 5 mins Title: Post Content: Switzerland 0-0 Iceland A fast start by both teams. After going so close to conceding, Switzerland went up the other end and Julia Stierli fired wide. Stierli scored an own goal in the loss against Norway. Update: Date: 19:58 BST Title: Post Content: Switzerland v Iceland (20:00 BST) The national anthems are done and dusted. The time for talking is over. Update: Date: 19:56 BST Title: Get Involved Content: #bbcfootball, WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) Switzerland are hell bent on winning this one and I suspect a quick start from them. This is the first do or die and Iceland will have to be decisive to win. Anon Update: Date: 19:55 BST Title: Will Swiss get back on track? Content: Switzerland v Iceland (20:00 BST) Rachel Brown-FinnisEx-England goalkeeper Switzerland's defeat by Norway was a disappointing result for the hosts but I thought they were fantastic in the first half and I don't think they let their lead slip because of a lack of application or a dip in their performance. The swing in that game was more down to Norway changing their tactics and the Swiss failing to adapt. Even then, they were a bit unfortunate not to get anything from the game. If Switzerland can play with the same intensity here then, with the crowd behind them, I think they will have enough quality to get their tournament back on track. Update: Date: 19:54 BST Title: Post Content: Switzerland v Iceland (20:00 BST) Listen to that roar! It's raining in Bern but nobody cares. Switzerland desperately need a win. So too, Iceland. There's a whole host of tournament sponsors dishing out freebies and getting fans involved in some mini-football type games. One of the kiosks right outside the station is Uefa's 'Get trained, save lives' campaign which aims raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and teach life-saving CPR skills. Update: Date: 19:11 BST Title: 'Finland deserved at least a draw' Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Lindsay JohnsonEx-England defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 3 Finland were positive, played with intent, played some really good football and deserved at least a draw out of the game in my opinion. Update: Date: 19:11 BST Title: 'You have got to be clinical' Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Anita AsanteFormer England defender on BBC Two Finland did create chances, but at this level you have got to be clinical. I think Marko Saloranta should be really proud of his players today. Update: Date: 19:10 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Spare a thought for Finland. They dominated every single metric in the game, apart from the only one that truly matters. They still have a chance at making the knockout stages but they will likely need to overcome hosts Switzerland in their last game to do so. Update: Date: 19:09 BST Title: 'Lucky' Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Nikita ParrisBrighton forward on BBC Two Definitely lucky. Deep inside Norway will know that's a lot of relief to get the three points over the line. Sometimes it's not about the performance, it's about the result. Update: Date: 19:08 BST Title: Post Content: FT; Norway 2-1 Finland Update: Date: 19:07 BST Title: 'Hansen is comfortable under pressure' Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Rachel CorsieFormer Scotland captain on BBC Two We all said it was a cross, but with players like this they do try these things. Caroline Graham Hansen is so comfortable under pressure. It feels like there was an element of fortune to that goal. Update: Date: 19:06 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland This video can not be played 'Jewel in the crown' Hansen puts Norway back in the lead Well when you've got a player with the talent and quality of Caroline Graham Hansen you will always have a chance to win. As well as scoring the game's winning goal she had more touches in the opposition's box (11) and completed more dribbles (5) than any other player in this match, while no Norway player won possession more times (8) or won more duels (6) than her. Update: Date: 19:03 BST Title: Norway in control of Group A Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland So here's how group A now stands after that battling win for Norway. They lead the way on six points from two games, while Finland have three points from two games. If Switzerland avoid defeat against Iceland later on the Norwegians will be confirmed as group winners. Update: Date: 19:00 BST Title: 'Performance wasn't there today but the result was' Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Lindsay JohnsonEx-England defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 3 Fantastic for Norway. The performance wasn't there today but the result was. They've won ugly, they've shown their resilience, their strong mentality. Caroline Graham Hansen, I think she was the only one today for Norway who stood up and said 'I'll take the game by the scruff of the neck' and she did. She was the catalyst and she got that winning goal. Update: Date: 18:56 BST Title: 'Norway will feel fortunate' Content: FT: Norway 2-1 Finland Gilly FlahertyFormer England defender on BBC Two Finland looked the stronger side, but when you have a player like Caroline Graham Hansen in the team - she's a match-winner. Norway will feel very fortunate. Update: Date: 18:54 BST Title: FULL-TIME Content: Norway 2-1 Finland Norway have done it! It wasn't pretty at times but they won't care. Caroline Graham Hansen's world class quality (and a whole chunk of luck) makes it two wins from two games. Finland are left wondering what might have been. Update: Date: 90+5 mins Title: Post Content: Norway 2-1 Finland One last long ball up the pitch but no one in white can bring it under control and it goes behind for a Norway goal kick. Update: Date: 18:53 BST Title: Post Content: Norway 2-1 Finland Gilly FlahertyFormer England defender on BBC Two I was thinking Anna Koivunen was going to go with her hands then! Update: Date: 90+3 mins Title: Post Content: Norway 2-1 Finland The corner comes in and Kouivunen is still in the final third here. She lays the ball down the line for Evaliina Summanen to cross but it's poor and the chance is lost. Finland's hopes of getting a draw here look to have gone with it. Update: Date: 18:52 BST Title: Post Content: Norway 2-1 Finland Anna Kouivunen runs up from the back but she's been told to head back to her goal. Update: Date: 90+ 2 mins Title: Post Content: Norway 2-1 Finland Finland continue to push forward for a late leveller here and they've got a corner. It's now or never. Update: Date: 18:51 BST Title: 'Finland have been the better side' Content: Norway 2-1 Finland Lindsay JohnsonEx-England defender on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra 3 I think Caroline Graham Hansen has probably been Norway's best player. The most dangerous player for them, she's looked dangerous on that right side, got some really good balls into the box. But really I think over the course of the game Finland have been the better side but haven't been able to get that second goal like Norway have at the moment.
