Refreshed proposal for South Africa name change sparks debate
According to media reports, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) is spearheading the proposal, supported by other political parties.

The Republic of Azania is the proposed name change.
As quoted in Business Tech, ATM argues that the name South Africa is deeply tied to the country's colonial and oppressive past.
'Before 1652, we were not South Africans. The name 'South Africa' came as a result of the British and the Boers coming together to form what was called the Union of South Africa, a structure designed to further the oppression of indigenous people,' said ATM parliamentary leader Vuyo Zungula, as quoted by Business Tech.

'All formerly colonised nations, like South West Africa, have changed their names. We now know it to be Namibia,' he explained.
Not everyone agrees, however, with political analyst Kenneth Mokgatlhe saying 'South Africa' is merely a geographical description.
'Other countries like South Sudan, Central African Republic, North Macedonia, East Timor, and North and South Korea also use geographical identifiers. It's nothing out of the ordinary,' Mokgatlhe told Business Tech.
He went so far as to say the name 'Azania' 'lacks authentic historical, cultural, political or linguistic connections to South Africa and its people, reinforcing doubts about its relevance and appropriateness as a national name'.

The explosive allegations were made on Sunday by KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has fingered police minister Senzo Mchunu, his close associate Brown Mogotsi and Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, as key and central tenets to the alleged interference in police operations, including the disbanding of a task team investigating political killings. 'This was done without the authority of the National Commissioner, nor I, as a Provincial Commissioner, was ever informed,' Mkhwanazi said. He accused the police ministry of interference in police operations and detailed how the minister and his associate, Mogotsi, had been entangled with a SAPS service provider, Vusumuzi "Cat" Matlala, who had been awarded a R360 million tender with the law enforcement agency in 2024. In May 2025, Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola repealed the contract citing that Matlala's company should never have made it past the first round during the bidding process. Mkhwanazi said the recent arrest of Matlala - on attempted murder charges - led police to uncovering - through cellphone analysis - a web of alleged corruption involving the service provider, Mogotsi and the minister. "On January 1, 2025, Mr Mogotsi sends a WhatsApp message to Mr Vusumuzi "Cat" Matlala, and it reads: 'I have arranged a meeting for Sibiya and the minister, they must have a solution.' "Another message reads: 'the task team that came to your house and harassed you, have been dissolved. They got the letter on Monday. As we speak, they are bringing all dockets to Sibiya'." The dockets were eventually sent to Sibiya in March. Mkhwanazi said further analysis of Matlala's phone revealed that the tenderprenuer was supporting, financially, the political endeavours of Mogotsi and the minister. "This is supported by evidence of conversations and the proof of payments of guests for January 8 traveling costs and gala dinner in Cape Town. We have the proof of payments," said Mkhwanazi. On the following day, Matlala received a copy of a letter - from Mogotsi, confirming the disbandment of the political killings task team. Mkhwanazi said Mchunu had denied in Parliament in March, under oath, that Mogotsi was his associate. Image: Supplied According to Mkhwanazi, the police minister, in cahoots with Sibiya, disbanded the political killings unit and retrieved the case dockets for them to be locked up under lock and key, in the Pretoria offices of Sibiya. Mkhwanazi said some of the dockets had uncovered a crime syndicate involving underworld figures, politicians, prosecutors, judges and senior police. He said the forced closure of the political task team unit, allegedly engineered by Mchunu and not by the Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, has sparked the rising tensions and a series of events including the arrest by IDAC, of the co-ordinator of the unit. A defiant Mkhwanazi said he would be opening a case against Mchunu for alleged interference in policing matters. Urgent debate in Parliament Cameron said he has written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thokozile Didiza, to request an urgent parliamentary debate on the disturbing allegations. "I have written to the Speaker of the National Assembly to request an urgent parliamentary debate on the disturbing allegations that emerged today regarding SAPS leadership." Special Leave The IFP, which is a GNU partner with the ANC, has called for a Commission of Inquiry headed by a retired judge to test the allegations made by Mkhwanazi. IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa, who is also the deputy minister for Transport, said the inquiry should conclude its work within a period of 60 days and that Mchunu should be placed on special leave for the duration of the inquiry. "The IFP further calls for Minister Mchunu to be placed on special leave until such time that the Independent Commission of Inquiry has concluded its work, and presented its findings. "During this period Minister Mchunu should subject himself to the due investigative processes of the Commission. The war against crime will not be won and South Africans will not be safe if the fish is rotten at the head, as alleged," said Hlengwa, calling on Ramaphosa to act with urgency, for the sake of national interest and national security. Calls to suspend Mchunu, Sibiya The EFF has called for the immediate suspension of Mchunu and Sibiya, saying that the SAPS was the biggest criminal syndicate. "Since 2018, the Task Team successfully prosecuted political killings, securing over 120 convictions and 1,800 years in jall time until their work began exposing high-level corruption. "The ANC is evidently not enacting law enforcement, but running a mafia state. The EFF salutes Mkhwanazi's bravery and demands an urgent parliamentary inquiry, and accountability for all involved," said spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys. Image: IOL The Economic Freedom Fighters, led by Julius Malema, has come out in support of KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, after he made damning allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, deputy national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and other high-ranking officers. IOL reported on Sunday that Mkhwanazi questioned Mchunu's decision to disband the political killings task team without informing the national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, and himself as the provincial police commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal. The task team, established in 2018, was a multidisciplinary unit focusing on politically motivated killings and related crimes in KwaZulu-Natal. Mkhwanazi accused Sibiya of being a "criminal" and of improper conduct, allegedly at the behest of Mchunu, for summarily closing the political task team. Mkhwanazi said the unit was disbanded just as it was circling on a criminal syndicate which included top police, prosecutors and Members of Parliament. Image: SAPS Speaking to broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Sunday night, EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys said the South African Police Service has become the home of criminals. "The South African Police Service is the chief crime syndicate operating in this country. All other crime syndicates answer to it. We raised this during the budget debate in Parliament on Friday. If South Africans even know the rot that is happening in the South African Police Service, nobody would even bother to try and get justice there," said Mathys. "We would just end up as a country that operates on mob justice. There is nothing. The only way we are going to clean up that SAPS is that all those high-ranking police officials must be fired, they must reapply for their jobs, and they must be vetted independently. Even the vetting process is not even proper in the South African Police Service as it stands." She said the reactions by Mchunu and Sibiya show that there is no urgency to address the nation on the widespread allegations levelled against them. She said claims that Mkhwanazi has brought the SAPS into disrepute do not hold water, as the police are already in disrepute. "No one even wants to go and open cases at the police stations because we know you have to pay somebody or the case just ends up being a cold case, or you end up being abused. Who trusts the South African Police Service as it stands now? If we go and open a case, we go there just to get a reference number so that we can go and claim on insurance, otherwise, if someone broke into your house and you do not have insurance, you won't even bother going to report it. That is how bad it is," she added. The EFF said South Africans are not protected, and live at the mercy of marauding criminals. "We do not have protection in this country at the moment. How is it that the minister does not know that the KZN commissioner has gathered evidence, or how does Sibiya not know that there is a KZN commissioner who has gathered evidence against him and is going to present that? What is that telling us about the state of the South African Police Service? she asked. The EFF said "the very few good officials left in SAPS" have no option but to speak out, as Mkhwanazi did on Sunday. Earlier, IOL reported that deputy national police commissioner for crime detection, Sibiya, has strongly denied the explosive allegations made by Mkhwanazi. Speaking to the SABC News shortly after Mkhwanazi's explosive revelations, Sibiya accused Mkhwanazi of making baseless public accusations, adding that he must "stop behaving like a criminal and behave like a disciplined member of the police". "He must stop behaving like a criminal and behave like a disciplined member of the police. Tell him to stop threatening people and talking about violence there. He must stop behaving like a warlord. He's a member of the police." Sibiya told the public broadcaster. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has also denied allegations of political interference in the work of the SAPS. On the other hand, chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, has expressed concern following the explosive allegations made by Mkhwanazi. Cameron said the allegations are serious and require urgent attention from the head of state, President Cyril Ramaphosa. 'The allegations, if correct, have far-reaching implications on the effectiveness of the South African Police Service and require immediate attention. The committee has long highlighted concerns over the rot within the SAPS which impacts its ability to investigate acts of crime and bring the worrying crime statistics down,' said Cameron. Image: Armand Hough/Independent Newspapers In January, Cameron highlighted concerns over the lack of detail in the directive to close the Political Killings Task Team and the moratorium on the filling of vacancies within the Crime Intelligence (CI) environment, especially in the context of the centrality of CI in proactive crime prevention. Cameron said the allegations by Mkhwanazi are also worrying because they lay bare the strained working relationship among senior officers within the SAPS. 'If those saddled with the responsibility to drive strategies to combat crime are not working in tandem, then the entire organisation will not achieve shared goals. The President needs to lead by outlining a process to investigate the allegations and restore the credibility of the SAPS,' Cameron emphasised. He said the parliamentary committee will meet to decide on the best process to look into the allegations and ensure accountability. Among the interventions, Cameron said the interventions might include calling an urgent meeting with all relevant stakeholders to account for the allegations. 'What is clear is that Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi has taken great personal risk to make these allegations, and the committee, Parliament, and the people in general must demand answers,' said Cameron. Mkhwanazi said he would open a case against Mchunu for alleged interference in policing matters. He said this extended to the minister's hand and influence in the closure of the task team unit investigating political killings. He also said links between an associate of the minister and the alleged criminal underworld, had been made through cellphone analysis. He proclaimed his boss was the police commissioner, no one else, and that the police minister had no rights nor powers to close down policing units. He also claimed there was a ploy to remove Masemola in order to destabilise the police. Mkhwanazi made damning and alarming revelations, accusing Mchunu of interference in policing operations and of shutting down the political killings task team unit just as it was uncovering links between a powerful drug cartel and high-ranking politicians, police officers, and prosecutors. UK's Reeves announces National Wealth Fund investment in carbon capture
Last year, Britain said it would provide funding of up to 21.7 billion pounds over 25 years to develop carbon capture and storage projects to curb emissions from industry and create new jobs. Britain has a climate target to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and has said CCS will be needed to curb emissions from energy-intensive industrial sectors. On Monday, Reeves will hail the funding as the first step towards the development of a carbon capture pipeline between cement and lime companies in Britain's Peak District, which will store emissions below the Irish Sea, according to a statement from her ministry. 'The National Wealth Fund is a force for growth, investing 3 billion pounds into the British economy and securing 12,500 jobs,' Reeves said in a statement. 'We're modernising the cement and lime industry, delivering vital carbon capture infrastructure and creating jobs across Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the North West to put more money into working people's pockets.' Reeves and the rest of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's cabinet are keen to show what the Labour government is doing to change Britain by announcing new projects after being forced into a series of embarrassing U-turns and a major rebellion from within the party over welfare reforms.
