Toyota Shows Off Wicked-Looking Hydrogen-Fueled Race Car at Le Mans

debuted a hydrogen-fueled racing prototype at the Circuit de la Sarthe ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Toyota calls it the GR LH2 Racing Concept, and it's based on the GR010 Hybrid Hypercar that the brand races in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
Kazuki Nakajima, the vice chairman of Toyota's WEC team, said that Toyota's main goal is to "expand the possibilities of hydrogen combustion engine technology."
As part of its ongoing push to develop hydrogen racing technologies, Toyota unveiled a new hydrogen-fueled racing prototype at the Circuit de la Sarthe ahead of this weekend's running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Toyota is calling it the GR LH2 Racing Concept, and it's built from the same chassis as the GR010 Hybrid Hypercar that the brand races in WEC.
Sadly, the automaker didn't feel the need to share any details on the hydrogen system or the powertrain, outside of confirming that they were built at Toyota's Higashi-Fuji Technical Centre in Japan. The LH2 chassis itself was built at Toyota's Gazoo Racing facility in Cologne, Germany.
According to a report from motorsport.com, Kazuki Nakajima, the vice chairman of Toyota's WEC team and a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, said that Toyota's goal is to "test not only the combustion engine but to learn a lot about the infrastructure and fueling system."
"Our main target right now is to expand the possibilities of hydrogen combustion engine technology," Nakajima said. While he wouldn't confirm exactly when the LH2 will hit the track for real, Nakajima told the outlet that it isn't far off.
Previous plans for the World Endurance Championship to add hydrogen racers to the field as early as 2024 have been pushed back to at least 2028. With the FIA approving new rules for liquid hydrogen storage during this week's FIA Motor Sport World Council in Macau, that could now become a reality.

But if you can't afford one of the most expensive new trucks in America, we've put together a list of the cheapest ones, ranked from most to least expensive. Only the cheapest derivative of each truck has been included, and the prices indicated below exclude the destination charge and any options. Finally, as pricing changes regularly, these are the cheapest new pickups at the time of publishing. Like other Frontiers, this variant has a 3.8-liter V6 engine making 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with four-wheel drive optional. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard. In 4x2 guise, this pickup can tow up to 7,150 pounds. The absence of forced induction and electrification should improve long-term reliability. Sticking with mid-size pickups, the cheapest Colorado starts at only $150 less than the Frontier. Unlike the Nissan, this is a Crew Cab with proper rear doors, so rear-seat access will be effortless. RWD is standard and 4WD optional, and this model gets GM's 2.7-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, known as the TurboMax. It makes 310 hp and 430 lb-ft; that torque figure dwarfs the Frontier's N/A V6, and the Chevy can also tow up to 7,700 lbs. But if you want a V6, the Nissan is the winner. Like the Frontier, Toyota's cheapest mid-size pickup has the same cab layout, but Toyota refers to it as an XtraCab. A 2.4-liter turbocharged four-pot is standard, and it makes 228 hp and 243 lb-ft; that's some way short of its Nissan and Chevy rivals at this price point. RWD is standard and 4WD is optional, while the Tacoma has an eight-speed automatic. Towing for this model is 3,500 lbs, which is less than half that of the Nissan and Chevy. However, that Toyota badge counts for a lot, which is the main reason to choose this model over its rivals. This is the first entry in the compact pickup segment, and also the first one on our list with unibody construction. In entry-level SE form (the Limited is pictured above), the Santa Cruz has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 191 hp and 181 lb-ft. FWD is standard and AWD is optional, and it has an eight-speed automatic. With trailer brakes, the Santa Cruz is capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs. It's more comfortable to drive than any of the preceding pickups, though. By dipping into the compact truck segment, buyers do get more features for the money, at the expense of capability. If you don't need to tow more than it can handle, it'll be a better daily driver. And so we arrive at the cheapest new truck on sale right now, which is the Ford Maverick XL. It's quite a bit pricier than it was, but it's still the cheapest new truck on sale. The standard hybrid powertrain produces just 191 hp, but the upside is its combined consumption of 38 mpg, better than any other pickup. For only $125 more, you can get the 250-hp turbocharged model, which also replaces the CVT with an eight-speed automatic. FWD is standard, and this compact unibody truck can tow up to 4,000 lbs, but only with the tow package. It started with the sixth-generation RAV4, which was shown in May, while this week, Mazda lifted the covers off its third-generation CX-5. Although we don't know all the specifications of these models yet, the manufacturers have shared enough for us to pick out five distinct differences between them. They may compete in the same segment, but they're not for exactly the same type of buyer. Where the new RAV4 relies on squared-off lines and angular body creases, the CX-5 prefers curvier proportions inspired by Mazda's Kodo design philosophy. The new RAV4 debuts Toyota's new Arene software development platform, which enables both new infotainment functions and driver-assistant features. Toyota touts improvements like a better voice assistant, a convenient home button (whether operating the system natively or with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto), and updates to the driver-assist features within the Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 suite. Mazda's new infotainment system in the CX-5 gets standard Google built-in, so Google-based apps are easily integrated. The new RAV4 now relies on hybrid power exclusively, with the base model being a conventional hybrid system with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 226 horsepower with standard front-wheel drive and 236 hp with optional all-wheel drive. Mazda's base engine may come as a disappointment to some. It sticks with a non-hybrid 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 187 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque, so the base RAV4 should be easily quicker. The Mazda does get standard AWD, though, and a six-speed automatic. Moving up the trim structure, Toyota's weapon is a plug-in hybrid RAV4 with AWD and a stunning output of 320 hp. Besides the fact that it'll be one of the quickest Toyotas, it promises an all-electric range of 50 miles. Mazda has confirmed that it will launch a hybrid option for the CX-5 in 2027, but it's not expected to be a plug-in system. Although no technical details have been supplied, Drive reports that this new hybrid will have performance that's equal to or better than the CX-5's current turbo, which makes 256 hp. As things stand now, the RAV4 looks like a better performer, although the CX-5 has historically been more enjoyable to drive. We'll have to wait to get behind the wheel of both to see if that's still true. The RAV4 has always offered something for adventure-minded drivers, and that's still the case with the 2026 model. The new RAV4 Woodland will come with both hybrid powertrains, and although not a true off-roader, its higher ride height and all-terrain tires will make it a bit more capable over rough surfaces. This variant will also have a unique design, with a raised front-end and Rigid Industries LED lighting. Off-road trims of everyday crossovers have become popular, so this is a smart move by Toyota - Honda's popular TrailSport models and Subaru's Wilderness crossovers are other examples. Over at Mazda, no trim structure has been shared yet, but there was also no mention at all of any off-road pretensions. Mazda has left the mild off-roader stuff to the CX-50, saying it believes fully that these two compact crossovers can co-exist in the same segment. While many modern crossovers can be hard to tell apart, we appreciate that the new Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 are not easily confused. As it did before, the Toyota digs deeper into hybridization, off-roading, and performance with its new PHEV. Mazda already sells the CX-50, so the new CX-5 is positioned as a more luxurious, high-tech, and refined vehicle. We expect its upper trims to be packed with features and impressive materials. The only question mark that remains with the Mazda is in the powertrain department - it will be at a distinct disadvantage compared to the Toyota until Mazda launches its new hybrid. The new RAV4 is scheduled to arrive first, later this year.
