SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)With electric vehicle (EV) adoption increasing and charging infrastructure becoming more accessible in the UAE, experts say the tangible benefits of clean mobility are extending beyond individual motorists to businesses - particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). EVs are ideal transport options for SMEs, said Abdulaziz Al Shamsi, founder and CEO of VCharge, a Khalifa Fund-backed startup that specialises in EV charging infrastructure and smart mobility systems. 'They reduce fuel costs, lower carbon footprint, and improve long-term operational efficiency. Maintenance is simpler, and EVs help SMEs meet green procurement requirements,' Al Shamsi told Aletihad. Through incentives, financing, and collaborations, the UAE has been fuelling EV adoption among SMEs, he said. 'We are working with government partners to pilot shared charging hubs for SMEs and offer tech localisation support.' In the next five years, Al Shamsi believes that electric vehicles will play a key role in the daily operations of SMEs. 'EV charging will be seen as a key part of business infrastructure - not just transport,' he added. Another green mobility expert, Ahmed Al Ketbi, shared the sentiment, pointing out that there has been increasing demand for EV charging solutions among businesses, especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. 'The demand is high among delivery companies and property developers,' said Al Ketbi, founder and CEO of Evcars, another Khalifa Fund-supported startup that focuses on EV accessories and charging solutions.'At Evcars, we are committed to staying ahead by providing tailored solutions that make EV adoption easy, affordable, and efficient for SMEs across the region,' he told Aletihad. Al Ketbi envisions a green urban landscape where EV production is more localised, fleet leasing options are widely embraced, and workplace charging is the norm.'We are also pushing for more direct SME support, including subsidies on chargers and easier access to fleet leasing,' he said.
Growing EV Adoption in UAE Strong government policies, saving opportunities, and technological advancements have been fuelling the EV shift in the UAE, the two experts said. 'Major cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai are pushing sustainability agendas, and government fleets are leading the adoption, creating momentum in the private sector,' Al Shamsi said. Among the sectors that are showing robust demand are government, logistics, last-mile delivery, public transport, and hospitality, he added. Al Shamsi's VCharge alone has installed more than 8,000 chargers and delivered more than 130 government projects nationwide since it was established in 2019.
Al Ketbi's Evcars is also building on the momentum and now growing its presence in Al Ain, Sharjah and Dubai, all the way to Muscat.

Hong Kong Unveils Bold 'LEAP' Blueprint for Crypto Leadership

Hong Kong's government on 26 June issued its Policy Statement 2.0 on the development of digital assets, signalling a decisive push to position the city at the forefront of the global crypto landscape. The statement introduces the comprehensive 'LEAP' framework—Legal, Expand, Advance, People—underlining a mission to develop a trusted, innovative, and deeply integrated ecosystem for digital assets. The regulatory reforms assign explicit oversight roles: the Securities and Futures Commission will licence digital asset exchanges, custodial and dealing services, while the Hong Kong Monetary Authority will govern bank-related activities in the sector. In addition, licensing regimes for stablecoin issuers and custodians are scheduled to commence on 1 August 2025, designed to strengthen anti‑money‑laundering safeguards, investor protection, and transparency in stablecoin issuance. Central to Policy 2.0 is a commitment to tokenisation of traditional financial instruments and real‑world assets. The government will regularise issuance of tokenised government bonds, streamline stamp‑duty treatment for tokenised ETFs, and legislate to support tokenisation of assets such as precious and non‑ferrous metals, and renewable energy products. These bids aim to boost liquidity and broaden market access, aligning with existing initiatives such as the HK$6.8 billion in green bond token issuances since 2022. ADVERTISEMENT Stablecoins also feature prominently, with proposals to pilot licensed stablecoins in public sector uses. Market consultation is seeking input on integrating these instruments into government operations and cross‑border payments, underpinned by stricter regulatory clarity. Tax incentives for private investment vehicles and family offices trading digital asset securities are expected in the 2025–26 fiscal year, aligning digital and traditional financial regimes. International alignment is embedded in the blueprint. Hong Kong's framework adheres to global standards—covering anti‑money‑laundering as per FATF, Basel Committee prudential supervision, IOSCO's policy recommendations, and OECD crypto‑asset tax transparency measures. Complementary pilot schemes include HKMA's 'Project Ensemble' wholesale central bank digital currency trials, LME‑backed tokenisation of metal assets in Hong Kong warehouses, and a Cyberport‑sponsored incubator scheme to finance blockchain startups. Since unveiling its original 2022 policy, the government has approved licences for over a dozen digital asset platforms, including nine trading licences and OTC frameworks, and supported tokenised bond issues by both government and corporate entities. Financial Secretary Paul Chan and SFC chief Julia Leung emphasise that this next phase marks a departure from pilot testing, transitioning toward institutionalisation and global competitiveness. Industry leaders responded positively. Legal and compliance expert Cora Ang described the framework as 'a strategic win' that aligns regulatory clarity with stablecoin and tokenisation growth. HashKey CEO Xiao Feng noted the city is entering a 'new stage of maturity', transitioning from sandbox environments to a substantive digital assets regime. Historical drivers such as the JPEX OTC fraud prompted regulators to enforce tighter custody and trading separation to protect investors. Notably, fintech legal advisers in Hong Kong report surging demand. Firms are actively supporting issuance of tokenised gold and digital bonds, as banks like Bank of Communications and Zhuhai Huafa Group deploy digital debt instruments via licensed platforms. Meanwhile, legal specialists continue to advocate for derivatives, margin‑lending, and institutional frameworks targeted at professional investors. Hong Kong's strategic deployment of Policy 2.0 underlines a competitive counterbalance to rival jurisdictions such as Singapore, Dubai, and the US, each advancing their own crypto regulatory frameworks. The city's alignment with global financial standards—alongside tailored incentives and public‑sector engagement—signals a comprehensive, forward‑leaning posture in digital asset finance.

Claudia Brings User-Friendly GUI to Claude Code

Claudia, a newly released open‑source graphical user interface for Anthropic's Claude Code, brings a visually intuitive layer to the traditionally command‑line driven tool. Developed by YC‑backed Asterisk, this desktop application enables developers to manage projects, run interactive AI agents, and track progress—all through a local, privacy‑focused interface. The interface addresses growing frustrations among developers using Claude Code's text‑only environment. Asterisk's design employs Tauri for cross‑platform deployment, along with React, Rust, and Tailwind CSS for responsiveness on macOS, Linux and Windows. Its key functionalities include session history navigation, branching checkpoints, custom agent creation, and real‑time analytics—all critical improvements over the linear CLI workflow. Security and data control are central. Agents run in sandboxed processes, with filesystem whitelisting and network constraints to protect user environments. The local‑first philosophy ensures all data resides on the developer's machine, removing cloud‑based privacy concerns. Customisable security profiles and violation monitoring further enhance trust and transparency. ADVERTISEMENT Session time‑travel functionality allows users to create and revert to checkpoints, much like Git branching, simplifying experimentation and version control. This, paired with an integrated Markdown editor, offers a unified environment for coding, documentation and analysis. A real‑time dashboard displays token usage, cost metrics and session statistics, helping developers monitor API consumption efficiently. Claudia complements recent enhancements to Claude itself, including the Artifacts feature that enables code generation and shareable AI‑powered applications, and Claude Code's improved agentic capabilities. While Anthropic's platform now supports no‑code app building and complex workflows, Claudia enriches the experience for developers by offering offline, granular control over agentic coding sessions. The open‑source aspect draws attention. Hosted on GitHub, Claudia invites community involvement—developers can inspect the code, submit enhancements or customise features, aligning with open‑source principles valued in AI tooling. Executables are pending, but the tool is already buildable from source across all major desktop platforms. This launch fits a broader trend: as AI‑driven coding tools proliferate, demand grows for interfaces that balance power with usability. Unlike fully autonomous coding systems, Claudia augments developers' workflows, offering transparency, control, and adaptation to personalised needs. In comparing it to comprehensive IDEs like Eclipse Theia—which supports AI plugins and LSP integration—Claudia occupies a specialised niche focused specifically on Claude Code, agent orchestration, and local security. Early feedback on social channels reflects enthusiasm. Reddit users highlight its ability to tackle 'terminal chaos' and bring session management to Claude Code. A spirited open‑source community contributes via issue reports and architectural suggestions, indicating strong potential for rapid iteration and enhancement.
